- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Too bad Yahoo! Maps are sucky sucky crap outside the US...
I wish Google had bought Flickr, with Flickr, Google Maps and Picasa, Google would have ruled supreme in the online photography business. I like their PicasaWeb, but it's nowhere near Flickr quality. - konno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm with vuzman on this. Yahoo needs to catch up with Google Maps before Flickr geotagging gets my thumbs up. It works for me, but it needs to be better in order for me to use this exclusively as opposed to third party extentions.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yahoo Maps and Google Maps side-by-side comparison tool, great for finding precise locations on Yahoo Maps where their coverage is bad (i.e. outside the US):

Bookmarklet for mapping, geocoding and geotagging directly in your Flickr photo page. It works with all common browsers without the need for any extension:
http://labs.sumaato.net/tools/flickr_geocode_bookmarklet/
Only works on one photo at a time, and works in a slightly different way to Flickr's own geotagging, but uses Google Maps. - pbarnes7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's the most popular (and best) photo gallery site on the market, so why WOULDN'T lots of people be interested in hearing about a cool new feature like this? If you think this is tiny then you haven't had your morning coffee and aren't thinking straight yet.
- sixlocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a pretty huge feature that many people have wanted for a long time.
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Totally agree. Google Maps gets 3–5 levels closer in many of the areas I've taken photos.
- 3monkeys, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Cool stuff. But it will take sometime before there is enough content to truly appreciate this technology.
I also wonder about privacy issues? Imagine someone taking a picture of your home with you car parked out front and geotagging it. Now imagine some innovative scam artist using that information. - radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He mentions in the review that flickr warns you about that kind of stuff, but I doubt that it alone will solve the privacy issues.
I think a good idea would be to allow users to pick a specific location, but then the site could locate the picture in a more broad area, like it would draw a several-mile-radius circle with your exact point somewhere randomly in the circle, so you could safely point out a neighborhoood or a city, but not an exact address. I haven't tried geotagging yet, but maybe they already do something like that? - gridrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Flickr have built some clever stuff around the Yahoo Maps back-end. But the Yahoo Maps back end isn't up to much compared to Google and Microsoft's offerings. And the map data here in the UK may as well be non-existent. So my review was more scathing:
http://gridrunner.blogspot.com/2006/08/flickr-has-added-mapping-tool.html - SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I want google earth geotagging! Check out vaction spots! Plus everyone knows google maps is the best.... tru that, double true.
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I also wonder about privacy issues? Imagine someone taking a picture of your home with you car parked out front and geotagging it. Now imagine some innovative scam artist using that information."
How is that different than the "scam artist" taking a picture of your home and "somehow" using that information? This doesn't add any information that the photographer didn't have when he took the photograph. Even if you trust the photographer and worry that someone will use the photographs for an unintended purpose, why would they bother? Why not just take their own photographs? - NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Quick description
"The way it works is pretty simple. You simply find a location using Yahoo! Maps (you can enter an address, airport code, city, etc. or just navigate around the map until you find where you want to go) and then from the organizer's thumbnail bar below you simply drag and drop your photos on to the map in the appropriate location and you are finished. Like a lot of things at Flickr, simple and elegant. " - sixlocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What do you mean not enough content?
My last photo that I uploaded was the 225,271,800th picture posted to Flickr. - cjanelo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For geotagging, I perfer http://www.platial.com - It uses Google Maps which provides much more detail than Yahoo Maps. On Platial you're able to link your photos to a tag as well as leave comments about the place you've tagged. When users tag places, their comments range from great reviews to personal stories about the place.
- waxpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When you geotag your first Flickr photo, they prompt you to choose a privacy level for your geo information. You can limit it to friends only, if you like, or make it entirely private.
- jgerry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I gave it a try yesterday on my newly-acquired Flickr Pro account.
It's neat, but I didn't find it hugely intuitive. Example: I have a Flickr set of 35 photos taken while camping at a national park in North Carolina. I can't search for that park by name, then tag the photo set. I have to select the entire photo set, then pull up a map, find the park, then drag the photos into the map to tag them. It should be a little easier to geo tag photos in bulk. - inactive, on 11/25/2007, -0/+0Cheapest and the best data recovery service in the world.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Sorry but why do we need a review every time Flickr releases a tiny little feature?
Why don't we review the new revision of the United States Patent and Trademark Office Search?
