- skez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've been using zooomr simply because I dont have to pay to upload more than 200 photos and save my full size photos, the geotagging is really cool too.
the thing thats nice about flickr is that its so huge now that you can find a picture of just about anything/anywhere, but i just want to share my pictures with family/friends and zooomr does the job very well - findyourownpath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Hey everyone -- working on getting better stuff. Check-out the zooomr blog for more info.

Thanks. - nik.com.au, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hi - Nik here from Techcrunch. The problem with the server was a few things, first it was hosted on a 512MB virtual private server, only because you would think that is enough for a blog. Second the apache setup and wordpress were default. Third is that we didn't plan for this much traffic at once. I knew weeks ago that we would need a new setup so started getting 2 dedicated servers ordered (2GB RAM each) and put in place, the problem is that they didn't make it in time for the most recent surge. On Friday evening I tuned apache, tuned Wordpress and put the shots on Flickr and it bought us a lot more performance and we could sustain the traffic even on the crummy little server we had (to give you an idea, Slashdot was only around 35% of the traffic coming in that day).
These services grow so quickly, and sites like Digg, Slashdot and Techcrunch can send so much traffic to a service, that the site owners usually aren't prepared for it or don't want the traffic - but after the initial buzz and servers falling over they usually learn a lot from it and come back strong. Your dismissal of zoomr and other services based on them being down now is unfounded and wrong.
If you would like to read more about Techcrunch going down and what we did to tune Apache/MySQL/Wordpress etc. so that the VPS we had could sustain the traffic, check the post I did on:
http://www.nik.com.au/archives/2006/03/11/techcrunch-feels-the-crunch/ - davdav, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Zoomr doesn't have the community behind it. It's all about the comunity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9More Like Flickr On crack
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7zooomr doesn't work nearly as well as flickr. Is there even an equivalent of flickr's organizr? Didn't think so.
- welvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I really don't like how photos pop up on Zoo00oo0oo0mrrrrrrrr. In all seriousness though, that particular function of their site is less fun than Flickr. Exploring the many different sizes of photos in Flickr is enjoyable, and you end up spending more time at the photographer's page, continuing the community aspect. With Zooomr it's more about the photo than the community, at least that's how it feels to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Kid looks like Mitch Hedberg.
- ivachen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5zooomr is kinda slow
- cdunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4-digg for originality....or lack there of
Flickr has such a better community, and a much easier to use UI
...the title of the article goes way too far
how can you say flickr has catching up to do when most everything on this site comes directly from flickrs ideas...even the design isnt original.
flickrs backed by multimillion dollar datacenters...a photosite that cant handle the digg effect?...i wouldnt trust my photos there. - redlaser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I was working on a review and a feature comparison for flickr & zooomr (riya, sharpcast, zoto too) when this post came up.Thought it would be little helpful to see things at one place,so i posted it without finishing it.Have a look
http://srired.wordpress.com/2006/03/13/flickr-vs-zooomr/ - TripOverFeet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I love Flickr. I live by it.
- cdunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It doesnt matter how small you are, photos are a very valuble thing and if youre gonna take on the task of hosting them, there is no excuses for being unreliable.
Either way, i dont see how this can be considered innovative, its blatently a rip of flickr in idea and principle - smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7if it's flickr on steroids, then it better be able to handle a little digg.
- david, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://www.zooomr.com
For those who dont want to read a 3rd party blog. :) - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's *always* slow. I've never been to that site and had it respond quickly.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Shortly after his death, a proposal spread among a number of Internet forums that March 30th should be designated Mitch Hedberg Day, a day when Mitch Hedberg jokes are to be used as often as possible.
--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Hedberg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Possibly from being hit with a lot of traffic?
- Quaitemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was already slooow long before it was digg-ed
VR3RL - sirmoggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3kristopher, c'mon man, same logo and name idea? be a lil more original than that. keep on stirring the weak sauce.
- skez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is one of the things that he's working on, remember this site is still early in development
- iamsam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Flickr is better
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4diggSLUT, achieving a new level in digg comment hilarity
- snoble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That's bs. Digg took down techcrunch the other day (before they put the screen shots on flickr) and I don't think techcrunch is a toy or a hobby. Yes, there are plenty of serious sites that are interested in satisfying their current clientèle and aren't thinking about expanding at the moment.
- rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1zoomr is probably great, but right now I can't get anything other than its front page. Maybe the site died under the digg effect?
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -0/+1Not working anymore.
http://www.expertmotor.com - mikae1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the fact that the logo at the top of the first page (saying "Due to really high-volume traffic...") links to www.zooomer.com (note the letter E).
- creativefreq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i think flickr is very cool; however, the bandwidth limits etc. are annoying.
zooomr looks pretty sweet. - byrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, at least its original.
- findyourownpath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The goal of Zooomr isn't exactly to organize as much as it is to connect people through photo metadata.
It is a priority, but the goal isn't exactly one in the same. - rodbibeau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its amazing how many servers can be brought down by one site...or a link on said site.
- wa3yri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dug to death!
it is now dead - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And now it's dead. We killed zoomr. Tee hee.
- A5204, on 08/13/2009, -0/+1Hey, that's great. Very impressive thing you've done.
- Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And as of now, like Barry Bonds last year, the site appears to be on the disabled list, must be the riods...
Sounds really cool from the article, can't wait to check it out and it's nice to see innovation come from other areas to keep all players [online photo services] on their toes. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This new breed of oddly named self-proclaimed "Web 2.0" applications is a flash in the pan. Yes, it's all very interesting to see a bunch of new graduates fiddle with the most mundane functions, but they have no staying power. The novelty wears thin extremely quickly.
- bodyvisual, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.beta.zoomr.com still works, although it is slow-ish
- Zeusbwr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Mitch Rocks :/
- Duncan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2At 17, I dont think hes a graduate of much at all (Just an assumption, he may have a PhD for all I know :D )

digg link here: http://www.digg.com/technology/Interview_With_17_Year_Old_Genius_of_Zooomr - morflof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1zooomr rocks!
- nitsuj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"flickrs backed by multimillion dollar datacenters...a photosite that cant handle the digg effect?...i wouldnt trust my photos there."
Flickr started small and grew too. This is only just started which means that the stability and community is going to have growing issues - the site is currently down as they move to a better data centre for example.
As for surviving the Digg effect. Christ. The main difference behind this guy and most diggsters is that he got of his ass and actually did something worthwhile. No doubt funding himself for his first server etc - the 'new' way of web dev, start small, grow with demand. Of course his server isn't going to fare well with thousands of viewings in any one go. The only answer to that is upgraded hardware/more servers + rearchitecting.
Would you spend several thousand $ a month on hardware if you couldn't be sure about a return/was a single guy without investment?
Exactly. - zebrinydeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, dropping the "e" from "er." How clever! What's next, a new twist on domain names using a .us extension? TechCrunch also had some good things to say.
- SummySun, on 02/07/2009, -0/+0zooomr looks pretty nice.

http://www.ocflex.com - Grimmeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yup.
- YakkSoho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Meetro? Zooomr?
Fuugly. - snapya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It works 4 me but it is very slow! I will check back later coz this looks cool!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4can you say lame ripoff?
