- j0ew00ds, on 10/29/2008, -0/+9FlickrDown from 3.5 years ago? Has there been no progress?
- Nekura20x6, on 10/27/2008, -0/+8I've used this to swap Flickr accounts and it works wonderfully! Highly recommended!
- wrek, on 10/29/2008, -0/+7Buried because it only grabs up to 100 photos from any given album. I have a lot more than that in every album.
- bazwilliams, on 10/29/2008, -0/+7I've been looking at a way to backup my Flickr! photos. I found very few that kept all the metadata too (and I believe this one doesn't).
The app I've started to use is at http://hsivonen.iki.fi/photobackup/ the source code is provided and is written in Java. It downloads all the metadata as well storing it in an XML file! - davidlow, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5No Mac version.
- Ganpachi, on 10/29/2008, -1/+5flickrdown is DOWN.
booooo. Hissssss. - evilrobot, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4does this (or actually, does the flickr API even...) allow you to also retrieve / archive the tags / descriptions, etc as well??
- seantubridy, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4Who said anything about only backing up to your own hard drive? I'm saying don't ONLY back up to flickr! I have had drives die on me but to only back up on flickr and not save your photos on your own drive(s) (or somewhere else) seems stupid. What if flickr deletes your account for whatever reason? It happens all the time. That would be a hassle to get your photos back, to say the least.
- seantubridy, on 10/29/2008, -1/+4So, you have your photos on your computer and you upload them to flickr. Then you back them up to your computer again? I don't get it. Why did you delete them from your computer in the first place? Also, flickr compresses your photos in all sizes - not a lot of jpeg compression but more than you would have on the original images so you're backing up compressed jpegs rather than the original jpegs or raw images. Am I missing something? Are people really uploading there photos to flickr and deleting their "originals"? Crazy.
- marlb0r0, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Thanks psud0. This is something I have been looking for and will be very useful.
- slanted, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Any suggestions on a Linux solution to handle the same thing? flickrfs was looking promising, but it doesn't work...
- jacekpoplawski, on 10/29/2008, -1/+4No Linux version.
- RodBorn, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3***** Flickr.
Why? Try, I dare you, try to get tech support from them. ZERO ability for human contact.
As a professional photographer I used to use Flickr as part of my online presence. I paid for their pro account. Then they decided to make my account "moderate" because someone thought a bare behind was offensive. This meant that no one without a Flickr account could see my photos. Flickr refused to review my account and basically shut my online portfolio down. I have tried to call through Yahoo, as that is who owns Flickr but nothing. There is not one single phone connection to Flickr personnel.
I also have fellow photographers who have had their accounts deleted for various unknown reasons out of the blue thus losing all their archived material. Once again with ZERO support from Flickr.
***** Flickr and all that they do. - luthienrising, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Flickr doesn't compress the original-size JPG.
- Ganpachi, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2true story, a week after my wedding, they hard drive on my wife's ibook died, taking all the photos of our wedding that we had taken with it. If it wasn't for the pictures that we had uploaded to flickr, we would have lost them all.
The Moral:
Always keep media backed up to at least two locations. The more the better. - inactive, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Yep, because storing photos on your crappy unreliable PC is sure a method of backing up compared to Flickr's file servers >_> and backup procedures, flickdown.. duggdown hey look something in common go FLICKR
- saadkamal, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Interesting tool. Will try it out.
- HonestAbe, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1But does it store all your metadata? I already have the photos, seeing as how I uploaded them to Flickr in the first place...
- fyngyrz, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1That's because you're a windows user. This is proprietary windows software; pretty funny they point up how "open" flickr has to get, while crafting something that could just as easily have been written in a multi-platform fashion. Flickr's API is extremely friendly to things like Java; instead, this is a windows-only .NET implementation; useless to linux, unix, bsd and mac users.
If you're writing something that's aimed at a diverse community, your best bet, by *far* is not to craft your tool in a platform-specific technology. - RodBorn, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1I know. It was a babies bare behind with it's mother. so tasteless.
- PrestonM, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1I would venture to say you have been fortunate enough never to have to work with Maxtor drives.
- Ganpachi, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1NM, they have a mirror up
- Katyusha, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1The problem is that filenames are not preserved when *uploading* to flickr.
I use a upload script that stores the checksum of the file as md5 plus original filename as tags, so that I easily can compare what is on flickr and what is on my hard drive, making flickr my backup solution. - goodbyepolar, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Another one to try is flump: http://code.google.com/p/onairbustour/wiki/flump
- Knowltey, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Why would you need to make a backup of your Flickr photos? You've already got offsite backup... On Flickr's hard drives...
Oh yeah, Flickr's handy little banning protocols. - bazwilliams, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Sometimes it is useful to upload to Flickr! from different computers. That then creates problems for synchronising that data to a single master computer... Consider if you have a laptop and desktop, use the desktop for storing all your photos and then take your laptop away on holiday.
Once you take a few pictures and you find a WiFi point so it becomes practical to upload to Flickr! for backup reasons. If you then take any more photos you have a situation where your laptop, camera, desktop and flickr all have different photos available and you'd need to work out what is missing from where...
Now consider some mobile phones which automatically upload to flickr bypassing your computer!
This is where downloading the Flickr! data is really useful. Flickr! can be used as your primary point of access. Upload everything, tag online, comment online. Then download periodically to your desktop computer and hey presto - everything is in sync! You have an offsite backup on Flickr! and a home backup for browsing your photos locally - they are unmodified originals - or in case your Flickr! account is deleted for some unknown reason. - m3mn0n, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Yes.
http://www.flickr.com/services/api/flickr.photos.g ... - unabatedshagie, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1***** happens sometimes, you might be unfortunate enough to have your drive die on you so it's handy to be able to get all the pictures back.
- psud0, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1You can call me Donna.
- fyngyrz, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2A) FTP isn't "architecture"
B) FTP is alive and well
C) The net's architecture remains the same until IPV6 is a requirement
D) a (n IPV4) packet is a packet, and when you learn that, you'll understand the net, and subsequently the web. In the meantime, please restrain yourself from attempting to abscond with the seat of Commanding General of the Web. - javiero, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1You perv
- mrBitch, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1So, let's get this straight :
The answer to the issue of why users don't backup their data is to use FLICKR-DOWN ?
I put it to you that the reason users don't backup is because the backup software is NOT designed to stay out of your way.
The answer to "Oh no! I've LOST ALL MY DATA!!!" is not to use "FlickrDown"...
The answer is to push software developers to come out with a better backup.
(of course, if you run OSX, then you don't have any backup problems since "Time Machine" is already running, and only requires you to plug in an external hard drive). - gyesmail, on 11/02/2008, -0/+0looks a very nice tool....
- jazzboyrules, on 10/29/2008, -2/+2I've been having this since almost a year now.
- m3mn0n, on 10/29/2008, -1/+1I love how the ignorant author complains about the lack of FTP support.

I don't see the need when it's hosted online and once you've seen a particular porn picture or video, do you really want to or need to revisit it? Not me. I prefer to remember the moment as it was. One shot per photo is more than enough.
- amh045, on 10/29/2008, -1/+0Surprising to hear. You don't sound like a douche bag.
