- wush, on 07/25/2008, -0/+14The worst thing about Windows Explorer is its obsession with trying to put folders in to horrible custom view modes. I'm looking at a folder that contains a bunch of other folders and a .txt file. Explorer has put it in to some kind of music view with artist tags and star ratings.
- sokol44, on 07/24/2008, -4/+15digg fo Free Commander - look like Total (Windows) Commander - and it's free !
if you remember Norton Commander - or Dos Navigator use it :) - InvisibleInk, on 07/25/2008, -9/+18My file manager, the terminal, has no limitations.
- Murdats, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8click and drag, thumbnails, previews
- DarkRealityX, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5I used Directory Opus on a Commodore-Amiga 2000 back in the day, and it owned all over the AmigaDOS file manager, but I can't see using it now.
QTTab adds tabs to Windows Explorer, and a few other features, but it's not mentioned in the article. Saw it in the comments though. That's what I used last year, but after a reformat I didn't put it back up there. I really ought to; I miss tabbed file management. It really made things easy, especially with favorites and recently-closed lists.
Another gem from the comments: Using the Links favorites folder. I've been doing that for years. Just go to the folders you want quick access to and add them to your favorites, Links folder. You can put a Links toolbar on your taskbar under quick launch (where mine is). The commenter has it on their explorer toolbar; that's perfectly valid as well.
First comment on Digg btw. - chaos7, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5yes that is a vista annoyance. there is a free program called "explorerview" that will disable vista changing the view type. however, i noticed if you ever go into explorer's folder options and click "apply to all folders" you will have to run this program again.
http://www.sdsoftware.org/default.asp?id=11214 - wush, on 07/25/2008, -0/+5Finder can't even merge two folders of the same name when you overwrite the first one. QED.
- 1ofMany, on 07/24/2008, -3/+7Directory Opus is $85.00????? That's a pricey little file manager....
- witchdoctor117, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Actually that one's not true, it can assign colours to different file types and folders. Well BASH does anyway.
But I won't argue that it can do previews or drag and drop :P - LANjackal, on 07/24/2008, -3/+7Voted for FreeCommander as I find it hard to justify paying for a file manager. Explorer's actually not all that bad at all.
- NTolerance, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4And Nautilus isn't very good anyways.
- witchdoctor117, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Gnome isn't a file manager its a desktop environment. Its default file manager is nautilus though so that would be what you mean.
- fatas, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Nautilus I love the bread crumb buttons feature.
- cootetom, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Not tried any of the others but I really like Xplorer2
- skate3214, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3HA Finder is probably the worst thing about OSX.
- gamben0, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4You just gained a hell of a lot of respect.
- JoeSK, on 07/24/2008, -2/+5I'm an explorer2 kind of guy.
- kipmarlowe, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4I'm also a Mac user, and you're also a jerk! You can be high-octane fuel for the Apple hater vehicle, or you can shut the hell up . . .
- Matt88, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4Well since Windows have around 90% of the market what do you expect.
If it was a top 10 list you might get one Linux or Mac app showing up. - brown705, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2I purchased the Pro version of Xplorer2 a while ago, and its been worth every single penny.
- student69, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2It is over priced. However for my main workstation it is indispensable.
- wush, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Nice tip - thanks.
- bumcheekcity, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3So yeah, you could well say it definately has "some" limitations.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -2/+4DOPUS blew up on me for too many years, but i did like it. :(
- aautopsy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Thunar is definitely my favorite.
- thinman1189, on 07/25/2008, -2/+4Buried for inaccuracy. It should be best 5 alternative file managers for windows. No love for mac and linux?
- skrowl, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3Try posting about how much you love Barack or hate McCain. That's good for a few hundred diggs instantly.
- TheHayze, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3I prefer Blackbox Lean for win, my self. No more need, or even use, for that crummy old Windows Task Bar, or Start Menu. Explorer is such a rubbish shell, it's laughable.
- MattBD, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Konqueror is hands-down the best file manager in any OS I've ever used. Beats Finder and Windows Explorer easily. It's especially handy for creating web pages - you can have the page open in one tab, and the folder in another.
- valadares, on 07/25/2008, -1/+3Midnight Commander
- dygel, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2I started using xplorer2 over a year ago. I was working for a company that had not (and still has not) established a proper deployment method for developers. As a result of that, I constantly found myself manually moving files from a local directory into a network directory. This contributed to a tremendous amount of on-screen clutter, since doing that meant I'd have two windows open for each directory I was copying files for. I went searching for a dual paned solution and came up with xplorer2. Never looked back.
- KnightCrawler, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Directory Opus 9 is what a File Manager in Windows should be. Sure $73 is a lot to pay but I use the software everyday so it's worth the money.
- antdude, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Norton Explorer (old days).
- chaos7, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1i was gonna try a explorer replacement...until i read the right click menu probably won't have all the options windows explorer has (virus scan, etc)
- Chris4, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1You've got to be joking me.
- bartel, on 07/25/2008, -1/+2Well, since mac and kde pretty much got it right there's no real need for an alternative.
- kipmarlowe, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1I love Magellan Explorer, which has really caught on at my wife's place of work, too. It's powerful and customizable, but clean. Split pane (multiple view options) with bookmarks above each pane, each having a handy pane clone arrow. The toolbars are drag-able instead of set in stone, and the colors are even customizable, so it looks and feels a lot nicer than most . . .
- MikeCerm, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1QTTabBar seemed so great when I heard about it last year. I used it for a few days and found that, for some reason, it really slowed Explorer down. It's had another year to develop, and Vista SP1 has come out since then, so maybe it's better now, but I don't really have much desire to find out.
Explorer in Vista has customizable Favorites, and that's good enough for me. It's basically the same thing as having a bunch of permanent tabs for all of your most used folders. - subgeniusd, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1(Have you) ever heard of a play ...... is understood as far as webtalk goes. This isn't English composition class, dude.
- Solkre, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1I use it on my DOS boot floppy, but don't have much use for it anymore with NTFS everywhere.
- kissmyash933, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1X-Tree GOLD :P
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1I am running Mac OS X and Windows on the same machine as I'm typing this. Your comment shows that you are a clueless fanboy who doesn't know what he is talking about. The Mac has Spotlight, which is sweet and effective for finding needles in haystacks, but that's about it. If you need really fine-grained search, mass-renaming, selective copying, comparing and merging folders etc., the Finder is a pain in the butt, and I'm too lazy to learn command-line tools to do the same work.
I have been using Total Commander on Windows for eight years, and it is incredibly effective, powerful and expandable by plugins, with a great developer community. Nothing I have seen for the Mac (and I have been looking for good Mac file managers for months) comes even close. I know several Mac converts who are begging the TC guys to port it to OS X, but it won't happen. It's the one piece of software I miss every day when working in Mac OS X. - balazsbela, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Krusader ftw! :)
- KnightCrawler, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1It's improved a lot from the old days. Dopus 9.1 is rock solid and the new features make it integrate very well with Vista.
- jur4iks, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1FAR should be in that list too.
- aristideau, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1They forgot to mention the Total Commander version with the LOT
http://tcup.pl/ - TechCF, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1It is more than I file manager. I use it much more than that on my Windows workstation.
Although pricey, totally worth it. And it is an oldie. Used it on my Amiga too. - webkami, on 07/25/2008, -1/+2NC anyone?
- ryanknapper, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Is "blew up on me" a good thing now? I'm so confused…
- cgoff, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1+digg for mentioning X-Tree.
