- MrViklund, on 11/20/2007, -2/+256Memory usage: Over 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use (by releasing cached objects more quickly) and reducing fragmentation.
- bwilliams80, on 11/20/2007, -4/+126Note: Please do not link directly to the download site. Instead we strongly encourage you to link to this Firefox 3 Beta 1 milestone announcement so that everyone will know what this milestone is, what they should expect, and who should be downloading to participate in testing at this stage of development.
- PixelD, on 11/20/2007, -6/+127Holy *****! this site has ads? Breaking out into a cold sweat without adblock.
- gllopc, on 11/20/2007, -0/+82It finally passes the acid test! http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html# ...
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+82Download, use, report bugs. This is the only way that Firefox will improve.
- stevedclarke, on 11/20/2007, -13/+87Awesome! (Totally unlike this comment...)
- sinatosk, on 11/20/2007, -18/+75not everyone is English and/or using Windows :p. may as well have provided this link instead... has all of the languages for all 3 OS
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-beta.html - quakenul, on 11/20/2007, -0/+47Very nice, indeed. Digg is running a *lot* smoother than it is the case in FF2
- Niubai, on 11/20/2007, -1/+40You both are right, sorry, my bad
- tapo, on 11/20/2007, -2/+40This *really* is a beta guys, so expect things to break. For me, every time I quit, firefox.exe keeps chugging along in the background, using up 99% CPU. Guess it's time to harness those old bug reporting skills...
- shankarganesh, on 11/20/2007, -2/+372 million lines of codes changed?
:-O - maverex, on 11/20/2007, -10/+37Go Firefox Go!
- geminitojanus, on 11/20/2007, -1/+27All translations are community translations. You're welcome to go and help the translator teams for your locale.
- beermad, on 11/20/2007, -0/+23Alternatively, type "about:config" in the URL bar, then create a new boolean called "extensions.checkCompatibility" and set that to "false"
- shadowfoxmi, on 11/20/2007, -5/+28try this..
look at the link when you are not high.. - Pxtl, on 11/20/2007, -5/+25Finally!
Memory whoring has always been, to my mind, one of Firefox's two big failures. The other, it's piss-poor concurrency (so easy to lock up the whole browser), probably isn't ever going to be fixed due to it's heavy reliance on the single-threaded world of Javascript. - drvelocity, on 11/20/2007, -1/+21I just opened up about 10 digg pages in tabs all loaded with comments, on the old firefox the program would have frozen for a minute while rendering them slowly on my c2d macbook pro. Now it's.. still slow, but at least I can work within the tab that isn't loading anything. Seems better to me so far!
- raccettura, on 11/20/2007, -0/+19While I urge people to try it, I do suggest a little restraint...
It's beta, that means it's unfinished. It's just a milestone to get feedback, wider testing, etc. Don't consider it 3.0 or treat it as such. There's still work on memory handling to be done, bugs to be fixed, UI to be polished etc.
Sadly every time, someone says "I'm going to use it as my daily browser" only to find out that there's a reason it's not the final release.
Be mature with beta's. Try it, give feedback, remember it's beta! - inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+19Adblock Plus works fine.
- mvent2, on 11/20/2007, -2/+20It has for quite a while, since Alpha 2 I believe.
- mikeazorin, on 11/20/2007, -1/+18[awk] please revise
- tektalk, on 11/20/2007, -1/+17What part of beta don't you understand? If there isn't Brazilian portuguese in the FF3B1, then why don't you take geminitojanus's advice and quit whining?
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+151. A lot faster on my mac. Back from Safari to Firefox!
2. CNN videos now work. Nothing worked before. Now - Magic!
3. Did I say a LOT faster??
negatives
Most plugins dont work. - GliTCH82, on 11/20/2007, -1/+15It's running so smooth in never stops running. In fact, the dots that move in a circle to indicate that a tab is loading a page never stop on any of the Digg pages.
- Rikm, on 11/20/2007, -3/+17People might want to Google "Nightly Tester Tools" for help getting extensions to work.
- BRODEL, on 11/20/2007, -2/+16I saw this comment and decided not to upgrade because I, like you need adblock..
Then I went and looked for the install page for adblock.. "Works with: * Firefox Firefox: 1.5 – 3.0b2"
Is it not working right for you? I won't upgrade if it doesn't work with adblock. - Misos, on 11/20/2007, -0/+13Perhaps it's something to do with Windows.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+14I don't know why you're being dugg down. Diggers must think that you're a Opera or IE user but I'm sure you are a FF user. Remember that in the past the Mozilla's official stand on the memory leak issue has been that "there isn't any memory leak" ignoring the problem and making his users look like idiots when they only want the best for the browser AND trying to improving it with their feedback.
- adamdon89, on 11/20/2007, -0/+12http://www.oxymoronical.com/web/firefox/nightly
If anyone wants to get their old Add-ons working that tool should help. - aussieNickuss, on 11/20/2007, -1/+12Digg has to load up an awful lot of javascript and nested divs for each page, so you'd expect any browser to cripple under 10 digg tabs. The fact that you can actually use the current tab while others are slowly loading in the background is a bonus.
- MalDON, on 11/20/2007, -0/+11Your screen shot showed nothing more than a cpu spike. Why not show us the process tab with firefox selected.
- WebWorker, on 11/20/2007, -1/+11You should be using Adblock Plus anyway
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/186 ... - ilikesboobs, on 11/20/2007, -0/+10I suggest you check out your add-on pages at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/. Just do a search at the top.
If the page says, Works with Firefox: 1.x - 2.x, it will not work.
But if it says works with X.x - 3.0+ then the addons should work for the beta. - adderx99, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9ad block works fine, you just have to re-install it. it doesn't automatically work if you try to upgrade.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/186 ... - inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9Dugg for being a man, admitting fault and apologising. *wipes away tear*
- kingdedede, on 11/20/2007, -3/+12I was hoping it would install next to FF2, but according to the release notes, it does not:
"Please note that installing Firefox 3 Beta 1 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won't lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available." - Piggo, on 11/20/2007, -2/+11So i just went to takebacktheweb.org to see if any of the grapple themes would work with the new beta. Lo and behold on the the right hand side of the page was a theme for the beta. All I can say is wow. The theme looks stunning in leopard and fully integrates firefox in looks to the rest of the OS. Its beautiful.
If your running on a mac I urge you to give this a try. http://takebacktheweb.org/ (on the right) - withincontext, on 11/20/2007, -2/+11Firebug. Web Developer. HTML Validator.
- luchid, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9Not to mention the java script effect libraries that digg uses are outdated versions that are slow and buggy. Everything would be so much better if they used the new versions. Migrating to them would only take a couple of hours, but no, they're still on the old ones...
- EmileVictor, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9Wrong, you don't need google toolbar packaged with it. The results from google search pages carry ads that contribute towards mozilla if you're using firefox.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9why should he
- dazonic, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9Animated PNG support!
- EBFoxbat, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8Actually mine did a side-by-side. All my shortcuts point to the beta but if I do the c:/programfiles/.... there is a new folder for beta and the old folder which still launches 2.0.0.9
- thatcrazycommie, on 11/20/2007, -4/+12I meant, will the vastly new codebase make most/all 2.0 extensions nonfunctional. I hope getting to be a dick on the internet gave you a nice rush, though!
- TwisterMc, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10The OSX theme is still in the works and not a part of the default beta instal. But you can get it at the addon's site. I also took a look at Firefox 3 here: http://www.twistermc.com/blog/2007/11/20/firefox-3 ...
- osbjmg, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9Engrish?
- gritta, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9Cause Digg is coded very poorly.
- tyywebb, on 11/20/2007, -2/+10His gay what?
- Syntaxis, on 11/20/2007, -1/+8I have it side-by-side, too. Also, adblock+ works just fine, what other add-ons does one need? ;-)
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -2/+9Your statistics are wrong on digg. The percentage of users of any OS is more balanced here than in any other webpage.
