Firfox Plugin:FireFTP
addons.mozilla.org — FireFTP is probably one of the coolest plugins for Firefox I’ve ever seen.
- 1740 diggs
- digg it
- dmason, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16This will come in very handy for myself and some clients. Thank you.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Agreed. Its what I always thought was missing from the Web Developer extension.
- fernando26, on 10/12/2007, -3/+156No link to a blogspam article with 99% filler? DIGG WAY UP!
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -34/+5https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?app=firefox&appfilter=firefox&type=E&sort=downloads
- pirana0, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6@beelz: How right you are. Just submitting that one link can get 10 times as many extensions that this submission.
- utch, on 10/12/2007, -15/+61 and 1/2 years later this gets popular. It is truley the first firefox plugin i install - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/684/
- soccerboi00, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1Is it not compatible with FF2 or something because FF2 has a built in spellcheck.
- dungbeetle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It works on FF2. I use both. Maybe you tried an old version.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Been using this for a long time excellent plugin use it as my main client
- utch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Ok so i was wrong it was not 1 and 1/2 years ago it was 457 days! http://digg.com/tech_news/FTP_extention_for_Firefox
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6FileZilla is better...
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
:P - Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6to echo the comment above mine, filezilla is alot better, and their new beta is cross platform... so now you can use the exact same client on any computer you goto, something only fireftp had before
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I've used this a LOT and you might be interested that it doesnt handle large numbers of files very well, It tends to freeze a lot, and It seems to be a good deal slower than most FTP clients at directory browsing and things of that sort.
SmartFTP is a nice, fast, free FTP client that I've been using since I dropped this one... - T3rry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's a cool extension, but i just wish it had the ability to do likfe FlshFXP and just transfer directly from ftp>ftp, instead of having to pull it to your local and transfer again, unless it does have that feature and i'm just blind.
- ryan83518, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@EXreaction
I dunno how much "better" Filezilla is. I am a huge fan of open source software so don't think I'm trying to bash Filezilla but I found it to be sub par as far as FTP programs go. Granted I do most of my file transfers with WinSCP now days, but updating my XBOX still requires the use of an FTP program, so I gave Filezilla a try when I reinstalled windows last month. I used it for over a month transferring lots of files back and forth. I found I wasn't as productive using Filezilla. I couldn't drag and drop files from one source to the next, and I don't believe I could create new folders, or maybe it was having the ability to rename folders, either way this didn't work right and I couldn't be bothered to look into the details, these are basic things an FTP program should do out of the box. On top of that, when I would transfer multiple files, my XBOX would only allow a certain number of files to be transferred(I know I can change this, but that didn't seem to help). So instead of waiting to upload the files until after others were sent, Filezilla just timed out and wouldn't transfer the files, and XBMC uses a version of the Filezilla Server! So far I've had a much better experience using SmartFTP, and it's a free program, and since the last time I used it has vastly improved over the years. But I say use what works for you to do the things you need to do. Also, if I have for some reason dropped the ball and the features I saw Filezilla is lacking, are actually available in Filezilla I'd love for someone to point that out to me. - kernelhappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ryan,
FireFTP has it's merits, handy to keep open in a tab being a big one. But in my experience FireFTP takes ages to upload a new XBMC install compared to filezilla. Mind you FileZilla is not the end all be all, but for a simple FTP client it works for me, although I do plan to give SmartFTP another go around. - jake13jake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, this was the first extension I ever downloaded for Firefox. It's gotten better over time. The interface used to not be the greatest, but it's been improved a lot. I also had a problem with multiple downloads or uploads (I really forget) back in the early days of it, so I gave a bug report and that got fixed too.
- television, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1***** this I'm leaving Digg, this place is just getting ridiculous - Digg isn't powered by the majority of its user base, actually its controlled by a very small number of people.
I'm sick of dupes, I'm sick of the same old ***** subitted by the same old people. This isn't really the place to say "bye" at all, but where is? I've been here now for almost a year, I've made no friends, and I've learnt very little.
I've got better things to do that give the top thirty digg users 1 of my pathetic thumbs up, the more you digg "their" stories, the more *****, the more *****, the more *****.
To Kevin, good look getting this place back into the hands of the people.
- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Yea, this is one of the more useful plug-ins.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Very schnazzy.
- Leevi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0FireFTP is the main reason why I still keep Firefox in my computer. Also FireFTP is the only Firefox plugin I have installed, I really wish Opera would have a FTP client too.
- hamstu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It really makes sense to have FTP as one of my tabs (less app switching...), great extension.
- 0siris, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It also happens to be the most compatible FTP client i've used. I have a lot of different hosts, and fireFTP works with all of them easily, unlike others i've tried. A great trick is to drag it on your toolbar so you always have it when you need it.
- bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If anyone who installs this is wondering how to use this, right-click on your buttons in the toolbar and select "Customize". The button's in there. I've been using this for a while now and it works great - I don't need FileZilla anymore, as this plug-in supports SSL and TLS.
- vwgtiturbo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+39Jesus, this has been around for a LONG time. Odd that people just now recognize it...
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It was real buggy for a while. It's very stable and usable now.
- duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My experience with this software was that it was always buggy. I haven't used it for about 10 months though. Does anybody have issues with it?
- vexter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Their will always be noobs. Its our duty to train them properly, and keep them away from the Apple clones..
- cpoteet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, it's been around for a while.
- xXRobbyXx, on 10/12/2007, -25/+25im not sure how this works? can i transfer files from pc to pc ?
- darkstorm777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28"Out of the box" no it cant. Set up another PC with an FTP server, and yes it can. Google FTP for a lil more indepth on what this plugin could actualy do for you.
FTP is mainly used by Webmasters, Server admins and warez kiddies, and some general users enjoy having an FTP server installed on their PC so they can gain access to their files practically any where in the world as long as you have access to a pc with an FTP client (like this plug in) and an internet connection.
@cinemafia your answer it quite apparent. Your blocking knowledge, not spreading it. - tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Why digg people down for asking honest questions? Robby, if you want to share files between PC's, there's FTP servers out there that will do it. ServUFTP is a good one.
- xXRobbyXx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21thanxs darkstorm and tony ;) and cinemafia, no I dont know what ftp is but after this reply i will search it on wikipedia, im just a kid and learning about this stuff, so forgive me if i asked this question
- darkstorm777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28"Out of the box" no it cant. Set up another PC with an FTP server, and yes it can. Google FTP for a lil more indepth on what this plugin could actualy do for you.
- DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Thanks!
- xjoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I use FireFTP almost daily, a really handy plugin for sure.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I tried this a while ago - It gave me a lot of problems when I was trying to copy things from an FTP, it wouldn't create the files on my computer for some reason.
I'll have to give it another try. - SWiG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is one of the best plugins that I use for FireFox. I had no idea that there was an identicle one for FirFox. They also keep this very up to date. I see updates come regularly for enhancements and minor bug fixes.
- jbestrom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5What is identicle? I know of identical but not identicle.
- jdc760, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10An identicle is the appendage of a firfox.
- trib4lmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It was sarcasm guys. The submitter misspelled Firefox in the title.
- kstagg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah - I've been using FireFTP for awhile now too and am loving it. It's ingenious in its simplicity.
- Evic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love FireFTP - I use it daily. But really - is this worthy of digg, it's at least a year old...
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If they fixed the bugs, absolutely!
- gbacci, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Was still buggy last time I used it, which was just a few months ago. Parts of a javascript file wouldn't ever upload to the server, causing hours of anguish until I figured out what was going on.
- Ricky28269, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11You misspelled "Firefox"...
- jorgenmz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's the Final Fantasy 1 version!
- grymwulf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1All your FTP are belong to us!
(*go ahead and shoot me now!*)
- davedekker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6cross platform and everything, I use it on Windows... OS X... and Ubuntu Linux.... its sweet
D- avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4OS X firefox sucks. I love firefox, but it seems to be really only good on windows(the linux version sucks a bit less than OS X's version).
/prepares to be buried - halik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think the OSX port sucks per se, but it's definitely less responsive compared to the windows version. Try upgrading to 2.0.1, it feels snappier than the 2.0 version.
- avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4OS X firefox sucks. I love firefox, but it seems to be really only good on windows(the linux version sucks a bit less than OS X's version).
- hpkomic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using it for a while, it's awesome. Highly recommended.
- bubi73, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2It's an add-on not a plugin.
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's an extension. Add-ons = plugins, extensions, and themes. Plugins are not extensions. Extensions are not plugins. Plugins and extensions are both add-ons.
FireFTP is an extension.
FireFTP is an add-on.
FireFTP is not a plugin.
Flash is a plugin.
Carry on. (Two threads on the main page in a row that required this comment... sheesh...) - fufubag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1quote from jonnyq:
"FireFTP is an add-on.
FireFTP is not a plugin."
...so bubi73 was right..... so your comment wasn't needed in two threads in a row....
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's an extension. Add-ons = plugins, extensions, and themes. Plugins are not extensions. Extensions are not plugins. Plugins and extensions are both add-ons.
- mmcgrath, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Did the submitter write this or something?
- SeismicShock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nope, i happen to know mime, and he was just as surprised as me to read this, don't even think he reads digg
- pbojovic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea - this is a really cool plugin, but there is an annoying pop-up that occurs when you leave it connected for a while. Still a good plugin nonetheless.
- sav2880, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been recommending this to a lot of the Mac users where I work and they love it. So much easier and more compatible then Finder, and easier then instructing them to use a brand new full-fledged FTP client.
- jonesy827, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1wow...no dugg down comments at the beginning....its a miracle
fireftp is great tho...use it regularly - jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe this has been around awhile, but I'm glad it made it on to the first page. Just installed it, looks like it will be quite useful!
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's been around for some time now, but Dugg for the sake of introducing it to others.
- nthpro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Its a good plugin but look to a standalone product for daily use. In my usage of it I found it to be buggy and slow. If you are only using FTP a couple times a year then no worries...but anymore and its shortcomings will start to bug you. It has been around for a year plus so I don't know why its just hitting the FP now.
- BeeBody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10http://fireftp.mozdev.org/donate.html
The program's creator is taking donations, half of which goes to orphans in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, half of which goes to himself (and the orphan he adopted). - Sonic_Molson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So long WS_FTP95.
- halik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow great,
I've been using the crippled ftp functionality in IE, but this is amazing. Thanks! - quickslvr1287, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the best firefox plugin imo. use it every day
- en7ropia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FireFTP is a beautiful. The FTP client in a browser tab makes perfect sense. I wish though it supported SFTP over SSH as I don't use FTP if I can help it.
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it support SFTP?
- en7ropia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesn't support SFTP.
- orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've had this for as long as i've had firefox... it's amazing
- jguevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using this a long time, and it's pretty great. It chokes when the last local directory you used is on a network drive, though--it takes forever for it to realize the drive isn't there and allow you to choose another.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very easy and intuitive to use, and I haven't found any bugs (yet.)
- dungbeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all of you people out there who for some reason can't or don't want to install this, I recommend Filezilla. It's the best stand-alone ftp client I have ever used.
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ - darkstorm777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Preferences > Downloads/Uploads > ASCII File types
The window frame expands, but the window dosen't
Small insignificant bug, but very handy in my opinion to be able to tab over to it., dugg for sure. - sheepster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love this plugin. works great, been using it since it came out. this is a must for web developers...right next to ietab.
- Fluxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2[jeff@host:~] $ ftp

ftp> put still_using_shell.png - 1ee7sauce, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3This is old as hell. I used it for a while but then went back to CuteFTP because FireFTP was so slow.
- bentheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i've been using this for a long time. it is handy, but i find filezilla to be a better all around ftp client.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ya me too... however there was not an OSX version.. till now it seems.. hehe
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bout time they are making an OSX version - This was the only reason to use Parallels for XP.. buby XP.
*delete* - hellhathnofury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I always had poor transfer speed with this
FilleZilla > FireFTP (yes I realize one isn't a firefox plugin) - pyr0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's nice except you cannot browse to any network shares on the client side. I keep the majority of my files on our file server so I never use this extension :(
- smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I noticed that too. It's pretty much useless to me because of that.
- Alez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Very Useful
- Twinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1best thing is, it is for a charity.
- Pifko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Excuse my ignorance, but does this work for sites like Photobucket and googlepages?
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they state that they allow ftp access to your account.
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very old news but digging as it links directly to what it should. Which is nice.
- specv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great plugin now digg front page worthy
- robbiekhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use this at work when testing customer FTP connections and also to manage my own sites, very handy. I moved from FileZilla BTW
- digiboy85297, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use it everyday and like it. simple to use and free. how cool is that?
- thinkycap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems cool, but does this support site bookmarks?
- wacka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes -- you store your sites and then select the one to which you want to connect from a drop-down list. Three clicks: one to show drop-down, one to select site, one on the Connect button.
- SLIPSTR3AM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using it for the past year and it works better than my other FTP progs. I love when the free programs soar over the pay-for ones.
