Firefox prepares for open-source marketing campaign
zdnet.com.au — Mozilla is planning a "big marketing push" that will coincide with the release of Firefox 1.5. This will include a community marketing campaign that will encourage Firefox fans to tell the world about their favourite browser by publishing home-made videos on a Mozilla Web site. Now, that's word of mouth advertising!

go firefox!!! - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now let's just hope they work out all the bugs like the memory hoggishness and the random weirdness with Flash and other plugins.
- PatrickStar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0make money from open source? morons.
- Smoktiludy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As long as Google cradles Firefox on their arms like they have been, funds will keep rolling in.
- orbitalpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0love your avatar Smoktiludy, wonder if kevin saw it.
- Smoktiludy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha thanks, I captured it from a TSS ep that happened last year around this time. It was at the end when they read a question about what the hosts like to do in their free time...outta nowhere Kevin makes that pose and I spit my drink out from laughing so hard. He made the pose again a few weeks later..I have a cap of that as well laying around somewhere on my hard drive. If I remember right, I don't even think the other co-hosts noticed him doing it either time. lol

I Less-Than Three Firefockz. - deadkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PatrickStar - Sun and RedHat make money from Open Source and it's quite successfull, and yet contribute to the open source community (through StarOffice/OpenOffice and RedHat Enterprise/Fedora respectively).
They money is in packaging and support and it's a very good business model. - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go go go!
gogo!
gogogogogogogogogogo!!!!!!
ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun! - apg88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Super Bowl Commercial anyone?
- saark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess the are aiming for the 15% milestone .. or maybe even 20% ??
- Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about spending your money on making a better browser instead of marketing *****.
- compacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh great. Now firefox users will become even more annoying. Is that even possible?
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cant wait for firefox to become as bloated as netscape did. it will come people. one day...
- CapTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this type of marketing is going to make it possible for the small players to get in to the game, whether they have the connections to the marketing firms. Call it democratization of marketing, or what ever else you want, but it is increasing the sphere of influence of many, many people.
- bahamafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well as long as 1.5 speeds up load time, stops memory leaks, actually runs faster then I'm happy.
- :::zak:::, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its just good marketing.
Being open-source is part of their unique product offering and they're probably the first one to really try and push that to a mass market, who probably don't know what open-source even is... - dreadsword, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erm, yeah - cast another vote for "please fix the firefox memory issues."
- toran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A funny superbowl commercial about firefox would be absoluetly wicked.
- bahamafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but for 2.5 mil? I dont know if they have that cash for a 30 sec spot, but it would be nice.
- 2097, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sick and tired of Firefox marketing. I use it and like it. That doesn't make this any less annoying.
- 2097, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And seriously, would you rather millions where spent on advertising or on code? Debian used to have "When code matters more than commercials" as one of its slogans, a sentiment I agree with.
Microsoft, Apple and others are marketing companies first and computing companies second. Let's not join them. - thecrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do you enter this?
