- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32This story will be on the front page soon - it's got all the elements.
1) Kevin Rose Dugg it.
2) It's about Firefox.
3) It's got an insulting-ish word in the headline
4) It uses a superlative when refering to a piece of software, which will lead to a flame war.
I'm not saying any of those are bad reasons for something to be on the front page. I'm just making a prediction. We will see. (At the time of me making this comment there were only 12 diggs, and it had been submitted for over 7 hours.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Making the front page of digg for dummies:
1) You should pay off Kevin rose, or any of the top 20 diggers (for lack of a better word) to digg this story. People have no lives and AUTOMATICALLY digg what they do
2) Make sure you have one of the big 3: Google, Apple, Firefox. If not, have the headline insult other stereotypically bad companies, such as Microsoft (use M$ for bonus points).
3) Make sure use somehow insult a specific group(s) of people
4) ALWAYS include your personal views on hot issues, such as stating "M$ sucks!" or "PS2 OWNS ALL", even if it has nothing to do with the story you are submitting. This will spark a flame war, gaining diggs from those who share your views.
If you follow these simple steps, you are guarenteed to make front page!
(/sarcasm) - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34I could've written this book! I just neeed to get my copy of "Writing for Complete ***** Retards" out.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I'm still waiting for "Dummies Books for Dummies".
...seriously, those things are hardly written in English. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So whenever I make a story, I should stick the words Firefox and dummies in the topic, pay Kevin Rose to digg it, and put "Firefox is the best" in the description, and it automaticly gets on the front page? I gotta try this.
- darkvad0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Information that dummies can't find freely online ;)
- cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think many stories fail to make front page even if they are worthy. Digg stories can lean towards a users reputation at times, then the story itself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Shut up you jackass! Stick to the topic and quit your flaming, the both of you.
- alexp2ad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6But barrys, the tabs are only in IE7, the dummies haven't got that far yet...
And dummies could get spyware regardless of browser... "Hey look, a crack for firefox!" *dummies download and get spyware* - Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i didnt know that firefox needed a book about it. i mean, it works just like IE...with the only major differences being tabs....and no spyware.
- Conglomerate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This book would be perfect for the older generation trying to adapt to today's world i guess, but otherwise anyone around my age who doesn't know how to use Firefox or the internet for that matter is most likely in a third world country(can't blame them for that), or really dumb.
- Eric4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Heh, If someone is reading a book on how to use a web browser, they probably don't know how to navigate to the sites with the web browser to find information about the web browser.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5no ***** IE doesnt have spyware....it was implied that IE has security flaws that allows for spyware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you'd have to be a complete imbecile to need this book.
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well first you have to start from the ground up
imagine if you are a person that has never been to the "interweb". They would feel lost. You cover the basics such as bookmarks, history, passwords and how to avoid scams and spyware and also what every other button does.
then you go a bit more into it with things such as the adress bar and search bar(top right) and teach them how to add more usefull ones. maybe talk about many of the shortcuts and how the download system works. introduce flashgot here
from there on you cover more useful extensions and such and then when they are finally ready teach them a bit about the about:config.
now the book probably goes deep towards the end - B4202, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I learned enough to get me started from PCs for Dummies a couple of years ago, before that I had never touched a keyboard....it helped in breaking through the intimidation factor; but Firefox pretty much teaches as you go so I don't feel the need, and besides I'm too busy diggin' to get my nose back into books....?!#
- stalinvlad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm, I got an appointmet this weekend to show someone how to use their iPod, they have had it for over 10 months...
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Guys, you can just make your own right now: http://www.buy4cheap.biz/signs/books/dummies/cover.asp
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Two companies that write to two very different audiences though.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You obviously need it. It's spelled "Firefox" not "Fire Fox"
- JustMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree completely. Ok, honestly, here's how I see it. People using this book as a switch from IE to Firefox, most likely didn't take advantage of most of IE's features in the first place. I mean, the switch from basic browsing from IE to FF seems like it should just be a matter of trying it out. So then I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that this book is for the IE to FF switch, but that is just my thought.
Note: I haven't read the book. - cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Right, Wiley Dummy books are geared for the average user. We are hardcore users to the bone! Theres a lot more tweaking to Firefox than you think.
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4We need a Windows for Dummies... and when you open it it read... it says:
Dummy... Stop using IE and start using Firefox!
The End. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12Agreed and I apologize.
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't understand how an inch thick book could be easier than a .01" thick product manual, ie ipod, or by just USING firefox. It's IE except the logo is different (among other things, but they're of no consequence to those who would buy this book.)...
- cnt2infinity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Wiley publishing seem to take on anyone to write these dummy books, so you never know what the quality of the material will be like. O'Reilly's (who should have got to it first), quality never fails and packs much more information. Hopefully they will release an advanced version soon.
- GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't want to sound as rude as some of the people above me, but the point has been made: What information can this book have that one can't find freely online?
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe it could be useful, if it discusses how and where to get extensions and how to use them.
I know ALOT of people who use firefox just because it's popular and either don't know what extensions are, or don't know how useful they can be. - raykart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You'd be surprised how many people there are that get lost and confused using IE. Now add tabs and host of other features to it and you can see why there is a need for books such as this.
While I do find this book funny, working part time as a computer tech I am really glad they exist. They help keep my stress level down as most people can just be told to go get "for Dummies, teach yourself" books if they wish to know more instead of bombarding me with questions. - jas8522, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"claiming a sizable share of the Web browser market with over 140 million downloads"
Hahaha, I love this line from Amazon's description of the book. Makes it sound like it took over a huge portion of the browser market without directly saying that. I think I need to add that I realize Firefox has done quite well, and I'm not attacking any particular side of the usual Firefox war. - Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Oh come on, who needs a book on Firefox? What a waste of paper and money.
- duality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let me just start this comment with an unconventional word:
Heh.
Wiley is known for publishing books on weird subjects and then appending "for Dummies" onto the title. If you go to http://www.dummies.com , you'll see exactly how weird they can get. "Nanotechnology for Dummies"? "Cryptography for Dummies"? "Patents, Copyrights, and Trademarks for Dummies"? "Divorce for Dummes"? "Massively Multiplayer Games for Dummies"? "Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies"? The list goes on, and it's a list I'd love to see a full compilation of.
I think the one that illicited the loudest laugh from me was "The Origins of Tolkein's Middle-earth for Dummies". I'm sure it's interesting, but seeing it at all is still pretty funny. However, I got a little worried when I saw "Forensics for Dummies" on that site. That's definitely a book that could go either way.
So, after seeing all of those other books on that site, "Firefox for Dummies" doesn't really suprise me all that much. - ChoadNamath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"submitted by dburka 13 hours 37 minutes ago (via http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...)"
Whoa... - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ventriloquism for dummies
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1O_O
Whoa indeed. Someone asplain!
KEVIN! - grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cant imagine anyone taking time in reading a book about firefox instead of..
ahh ***** it...
books for dummies...picture edition only. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks like a useless book the dude needed to write to get some money.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This has been out for a while now. They have had it at frys for a few months.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Isn't this sort of like, "elevator operation for dummies" How can a book over 3 pages be written on this topic? It's a browser, you browse with it, you bookmark what you'd like to return to.
- musicgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they use the "for dummies" thing to mean for beginners. Dummies!
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Written by one of the co-creators of Firefox, its got to be good right?
Maybe someone write up a "Digg for Dummies" ;) - GreenLantern33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You my friend, have a case of the zakly's. Because you are exZackly right.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1errr..... Why do we need this book? Useing Fire Fox is not hard.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Do you see the paradox? If you need a book on how to use Firefox you have your head so deeply implanted up your ass you won't be able to read the book.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Tthe target market for this book is for dummies that still use IE and think it's better then Firefox.
- sonyx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too mant memory-leaks with FF unfortunately.
- tellmewhyp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The previous ones were OK...
But if you read this one, you should be really a dummy - crackSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1There is a crack for Firefox? Where? ::searches google::
[All I found off of google was a forum discussion about whether or not webserver logs are enough to prosecute someone...] - barrys, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5IE has tabs and doesn't have spyware.
lol @ mentally slow fan boys, yet with the same enthusiasm as the normal fan boys... - tellmewhyp, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4ie doesn't have spyware either..

What is Digg?
