- treelovinhippie, on 10/19/2007, -4/+205Digg could (and should) fix this issue in literally less than 5min!
Simple solution:
1) Add an extra reporting feature: "Site down"
2) If enough reports submitted, URL of original story automatically changes to the DuggMirror page.... e.g. it changes to http://www.duggmirror.com/software/Firefox_extension_can_avoid_digg_effect
Why they haven't already done this is beyond me. I've already sent them a couple of emails about it, and posted numerous comments... but still nothing (not even a reply). - dirtmaster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+133dAbReAkA, what a stupid name..
- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37@treelovinhippie
That really would be perfect. I hope that's implimented soon, there is absolutely no disadvantage to it. - SpikeX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26@treelovinhippie: It's because Digg and DuggMirror aren't affiliated with one another, so Digg can't link to DuggMirror in such a big way (literally for every story). For example, what if DuggMirror went down? Digg would be screwed, and the feature would become useless. That's why they don't auto-link to cached sites.
Edit: Damn you, westoncampbell, you beat me to it! :P - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"there is absolutely no disadvantage to it."
Yes there is. What happens when the server is back up and I don't want the second-hand duggmirror page? Vote again that the server is back up? Oh wait, oh no! The server's down again! Everybody vote! Etc... - Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I use this add-on: http://roachfiend.com/archives/2006/08/28/errorzilla-useful-error-pages-for-firefox/
It creates a custom page not found page with useful buttons to click on (google cache , coral etc...) That way, when I click on a link and the page doesn't show, I've got instant options instead of fussing with rick-clicks. - evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Greasemonkey script. Good one.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4128 - bunnymanjp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12is there even a slashdot effect anymore?
- PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've always thought that Digg should incorporate their own mirroring system.
- eksmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Anyone know if there is a grease monkey script to add "dugg mirror" link next to each story?
If not, it'd be a pretty useful script. - merugo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Or you could install a Greasemonkey script that adds mirrors to Coral, DuggMirror and Google Cache next to every Digg link: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4158
- carrotopp13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://userscripts.org/tag/digg
there are a couple of different scripts there that add the links - stealth658, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4there is the duggmirror firefox extension that i updated for digg 3.0 here: http://duggmirror.com/mirroredbyduggmirror.xpi
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes, all the time, every time slashdot links to a small site. slashdot traffic is incredible. it's a lot worse than digg, since there is a greater degree of selection, your articles stay up for longer, and far more people i know have RSS readers on slashdot than digg. trust me, i've had sites appear on the front pages of both. slashdot traffic is like exponential decay from the time it shows up. the first ten minutes are BAD. bandwidth and RAM are very significant. digg traffic is more or less constant traffic for as long as it is on the first few links on the front page, then dies more rapidly at some point later.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It sounds very similar to the "Resurrect" firefox extension, except with duggmirror and Mirrordot added, if anyone's also interested in that script:
http://trac.arantius.com/wiki/Extensions/Resurrect - deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not Digg's or SlashDot's job to keep sites up and running.
What Digg should do is have something similar to robot.txt like the search bots use for those who don't want to be dugg. Give site owners a choice to opt out.
You don't want the traffic then use that feature, otherwise Digg on. - reject, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's a great-looking extension. Personally, I use Resurrect Pages, which does the exact same thing.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2570/ - ndonohue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even though duggmirror is not Digg's, I don't think they would mind having something like that. Additionally, right now, if the server is down, its down. If this autolink function is implemented it could be nothing but a bonus. if you dont want to see the duggmirror page, just click your back button.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"For the "what if the site comes back online again, and I don't want the DuggMirror page anymore".... what they could possibly do once the link has been changed is have a x-hour countdown after-which the link would return to the original URL. If there's still a problem, Diggers can report it again."
Nope, not elegant. Keep trying. =)
Ok, ok. I'll be constructive and throw out an idea: Have a digg bot visit the site every 5 or 10 minutes. If the bot times out, then digg provides mirror links (dugg, google, coral) _automatically_. No voting nonsense. When the bot doesn't time out, don't show the alternative links. The bot would access the site only once an hour after 24 hours, and after a couple days, not at all. - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When you view a mirror from duggmirror.com, it gives you the choice to use the following mirrors as well:
Google Cache
Coral Cache 8080
Coral Cache 8090
Archive.org Wayback Machine
I don't read Slashdot, so Duggmirror is doing it all for me. So this extension is kinda useless, at least to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using the "digg - add mirrors" greasemonkey script for a long time. It has been available for over a year.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807
It puts little DuggMirror, Coral, and Google Cache icons next to each story title. - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@treelovin:
Why would they offer money each time they have to use duggmirror? It doesn't benefit them to get people to the site, it benefits the site owners. Not to mention that the sites that go down are near worthless blog sites mostly anyways. If there was important worthwhile news linked through digg you can be sure it will be available on some well-endowed server. - orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sweet, I used to have "cacheout" for the same thing but the hosting went down a long time ago
- orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't like how that conflicts with the "+MY#1" icon...
maybe it's cause i commented out the piece of code in that script that adds the first two mirror links - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, get that greasemonkey mirror script that evilpig posted! It's perfect!
- atrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2treelovinhippie:
Why no duggmirror integration: because technically its not theirs and they'd have to get permission to integrate it.
Heck, it should automatically cache the site once it hits the home page, and give the submitter an option to have it link to the cache rather than the site if it hits the home page. - phileplanet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.scrutinizethis.com/url/cached/
for non-Firefox users - worthawholebean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've almost finished DuggMirror support.
- Rhelim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MAKE ONE FOR INTERNET 'SPLORER!!!!!!! lol jk
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://cachebin.com/ is another one to have for cached copies.
- Rhelim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1basically, it's when somebody posts something on Digg and everyone goes to that link, overloading that website's server. If the server is overloaded, then nobody can see the website and there's a broken link on the front page of Digg. People want to avoid it because they want to know what's so important that it was able to make the front page of Digg.
- NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use this extension and it works great for me.
- leviathan3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe the site itself should have a link to the duggmirror cache. That would certainly reach more people than just those who choose to use this (or a similar) extension.
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or use this and greasemonkey, and have all the mirrors including duggmirror, with no need to wait for the next release.
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807 - dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Resurrect Pages: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2570/
You can use it when right clicking on a link or when you get an error page. The only thing it's missing is a Google text-only option, which would greatly speed up loading if the original server is down. - SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"BTW, WTF is a "dAbReAkA", anyway?" - jimi1337
I would imagine it's "Da Breaka" (A Breakdancer) written in young girl alternating caps.
And the title of this post is a bit misleading, as the digg effect applies to servers, not clients. Handy extension though. - markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't work for me either.
- SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got tired of the slow Slashdot-based, XPATH-using Greasemonkey scripts. I wrote my own. It's very fast. http://digg.com/mods/Digg_Mirrors_Script
- geuisteses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fyi, I created cacheout a while back. It's going to be coming back in a *big* way very soon. Stay tuned :)
- spiderfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a problem with that type of interaction. Who will click on the mirrors in the first place and effectively mirror the site before it goes down?
- darkpl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://roachfiend.com/archives/2006/08/28/errorzilla-useful-error-pages-for-firefox/
ErrorZilla is much better, i think. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Argh, but wait... there's more (comment count-down cut me out while editing):
Not every link would use the idea. It would just be those submitted websites that have been reported as being "down" that would have their link changed to point to the corresponding DuggMirror page.
For the "what if the site comes back online again, and I don't want the DuggMirror page anymore".... what they could possibly do once the link has been changed is have a x-hour countdown after-which the link would return to the original URL. If there's still a problem, Diggers can report it again.
Voila! ... anyone else want to play Devils advocate? :D - worthawholebean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If anyone can think of a better name, I wouldn't mind...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my biggest gripe about the Google cache is that if you're viewing the Google cache of something, you probably are doing it because the page is down or doesn't exist anymore. therefore, none of the images inside the page are bound to work, especially the relatively-linked ones. Google leaves all the [img src="blah.jpg"] tags intact, and for pages with complicated nested table layouts, the browser often waits for the entire page to load, including images, before rendering it to the user. and thus the browser starts waiting indefinitely for the images to (never) load, and then finally times out and displays what it has. and if I hit the stop button (in Firefox) while it's trying to load the said images, it proceeds to just display nothing at all. so i either have to wait, or manually turn off my images and then load the Google cache version.
the Google cache should annul the src="" attribute for relatively linked images. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To replies above... yep I know they are two separate things, but surely Digg can have a quick meeting with them and sort something out. If the DuggMirror people want money (compensation for caching) then maybe Digg can give them a small fee each time a story needs to use their service (not per visit, but per story).
If there are copyright issues with the name, that can easily be changed.
With the "what if DuggMirror went down"... I've never seen it down. There have only been a few times where they haven't caught a cache nor have Google or Coral caught one. But the majority of the time when websites have suffered from the Digg-effect, DuggMirror tends to load quickly for me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is digg 4.0 now isn't it? Anyway, I don't see the duggmirror link with the extension installed.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0FNRB
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1True about the crappy blog sites usually being the ones that go down.
But the whole idea isn't about recruiting more people to Digg, it's about improving the service Digg offers. So it would keep current users happy as they don't have to worry about manually going to the DuggMirror URL every time a link goes down.
On the other hand, it also benefits the websites who go down under the Digg-effect, thus promoting more websites to use Digg (which can be both good and slightly bad).
The DuggMirror people would probably be happy to integrate in this idea without any money... they've been doing it for ages anyway. But I was just thinking that if they did ask for some kind of compensation for their service, it wouldn't cost Digg much to give them say $2 for each story that needs to use their service. By the end of the year, I'm sure that would only just cover their hosting costs over at DuggMirror.
(ps I have nothing to do with DuggMirror, though for some reason I've been typing the name in capitals lol) -
