- Titan486, on 10/12/2007, -1/+117Double would be 100% increase.. not 50%
- iMyst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Your yelling is whats going to get you dugg down. I use Opera and love it, infact I left Firefox for it. However, I'm still digging you down for being a pompous dick.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28@anicejew
Safari may be slightly faster, not enough to make me use it though, Firefox is WAY more configurable, you can customize it how you want, plus I can use the same add-ons on Firefox for Mac as I use on Firefox for Win, or Firefox for Linux for that matter, such as the Downthemall download manager.
Speed isn't everything, frankly I don't notice the speed difference at all - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25lol "firefox myths" who gives a fuk!
I swapped to Firefox from IE about a year ago
I instantaneously found that adware didn't accumulate as fast as it did before
I don't care what the general consensus is or isn't or if there are "myths" that are curculating
.... I found it was better for me, and I use it. Its as simple as that
:P
on a side note... my swapping to Firfox resulted in me seeking out other open source apps
and now my lappy runs SUSE... w00t for me! :P - ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Uhh, that website says IE6 is more secure than firefox. That's laughable.
- allhard, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Does not surprise me. I have not met one industry pro (That does not work for Microsoft or Mozilla) that does not recommend Firefox.
- Nanobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Since when is a 50% increase "double"? If it had doubled, it would be about 20% now. Inaccurate headline.
- zeblith, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Don't forget the release of IE7, now. That single event most certainly forced me to change to Firefox. I had been resisting for quite some time, even out of the sake of just resisting change, but IE7 is just plain unbearable.
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16firefox myths: When a guy does a speed test that compares IE with all the libraries loaded vs. Firefox without libraries loaded and calls it even, he's not playing on a level field. Or seriously telling us he can run XP w/ IE6 on a pre-Pentium processor. I'm sorry, but NO.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Seriously...how on earth could someone mistake 50% increase for "doubled"?
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@allhard
I did. I think that there are people that just don't like open source for no particular reason (yes, and I've seen IT pro's that use IE and WMP at home). Probably just "free software can't be good" myth sits too deep in their mind.
@anicejew
Of course it's gonna be faster... and IE for Windows, and Konqueror for KDE, etc... because a good chunk of their shared libraries is part of the OS (or DE) and is already loaded into memory. - Jo9100, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13http://getfirefox.com/ - for those who haven't switched
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Archon, you assume that the guy is telling the truth, and since he's lying on some of those benchmarks at the least, and at best misleading elsewhere, you'll forgive me for skepticism. If it's true, it's worth looking into, but since the guy doesn't cite any proof (which he at least attempts to do elsewhere, though the quality is lacking) and is addressing it in a "firefox fanboy" section, he's not at the "OMG, his every word must be true" credibility level
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Maybe there is no memory leak anymore, but I'm sure it's still pretty slow (I'm using Fedora 6). I was really surprised to see Opera performing _much_ faster than Firefox, keeping in mind that many Opera's libraries are compiled in statically and it is supposed to be slower than open source Firefox that can be optimized and integrated into distro in any way. Viewing 100+ comments on digg is a real pain in the ass, it usually takes 5+ seconds to load such page (Athlon XP 1800+)
- blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We need a "Bury - Powered by Fanboyism" option for articles like this one. Inspired by the "Steve Jobs has a huge production van!!!" article that actually made it to the front page a few stories down.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@sleepy:
(1) open about:config
(2) add a new key: config.trim_on_minimize
(3) set its value to true.
minimize and restore FF window to achieve your goal. - ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5hahahaha well said iMyst!
- Dannychico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Four20
I am jealous. Frankly, though, it's unthinkable that such a well-publicized, common and crippling bug as the Firefox memory leak has gone unfixed for this long - even with the release of 2.0! - kroenecker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'm a web designer and speaking from experience Firefox is consistent when rendering complex pages. IE (even 7) on the other hand is unpredictable once you begin coding beyond a simple layout. It's pathetic.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I started with Lynx back in the mid 90's, followed by Mosaic not long after, then I moved to Netscape Navigator, moved to the Mozilla Suite, then moved to Firefox, which I still use today.
But realistically, Opera is *much* more likely to take 25% of the browser market first. Why? There's a version of Opera for damn near anything with an internet connection -- PCs, PDAs, cell phones, video game consoles... The more the internet expands beyond PCs, the more Opera's market share will rise. - Nanobe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That Firefox Myths page is a well-known article full of lies and deliberate twists of the truth. I've written an article addressing most of the issues (search for "Re: Firefox Myths" on Google) and for that he decided to deliberately misquote me numerous times on that page, making it appear as though I agreed with his page, and then told other lies about me. My name is David Hammond, by the way. Many of the quotes in the sidebar were doctored and several sources were misrepresented, including my own standards support resource. I battled with him for months to get him to stop misrepresenting the results of my study, and in the end he just resorted to lying about my credibility.
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Fanboys (Definition) - "An unkempt, socially awkward, young man who may be perceived as a loud mouthed pseudo-intellectual. Fanboys can be zealously committed to their particular narrow area of interest, to the exclusion and derision of competing or similar products, regardless of their merits. Fanboys are often perceived as possessing a sycophantic devotion to the creators behind the object of their passion. An obsession may be short or long term and, at times, aggressively defended. Fanboys are noted for a very emotional attachment to their chosen subject, often taking negative remarks about it as a personal attack. They may readily engage in debates, but will fall back on emotional responses."
- iMyst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But Opera has always been as responsive as it was at installation, and that is as good as a vanilla Firefox install.
- sleepyness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I've had FF 2.0 use up to 2gb of physical and another 2gb of virtual memory. That's just ***** ***** insane. Unlike Opera/IE, FF doesn't give up it's memory if you close a bunch of tabs, it just keeps hogging. POS. I still use it along with Opera/IE, but less and less now. Note, I have 2gb of physical memory, and FF was crapping out...
- jake13jake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Someone who thinks that if 50% decrease is half, than 50% increase must be double, or just call him someone that has perpetually misidentified a concept due to a lack of education.
- iMyst, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I'm more for Opera, its got a better feel when using it in my opinion. Firefox seems bloated at times, especially after installing plugins.
- MannaPC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Correct!
Like I said in a previous comment, most of Firefoxmyth.com's website is out of date =P. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I suggest people try the alpha 1 build of firefox 3.0 ... its pretty stable and it renders pages real nice.. even passes acid2 test...
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bury the article for the wrong title. It was a 46% increase. It wasn't even a full 50% growth. While astounding and I'm happy about it, it's not a "nearly doubled" (that'd be 100% growth).
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4
And yet, the memory leak from hell lives on...
You've got something screwed up. 135MB being used here, after several hours of surfing, and 15 extensions installed. The memory leak went away with 2.0, if you still have one it's a badly-made extension causing it or a corrupted profile. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg posters are retarded, maybe?
BURY ME!!!! AVALANCHE!!!! - truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hopefully by the end of 2007 Firefox will have 25 percent of the market share. Its going to be interesting to see if it gains market share now that IE 7 is out. Will the casual internet user switch?
- Peter777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have to get my two Cents worth in here: Safari can only be faster because they do different caching and prefetching, so they are cooking with water just like everybody else.
Firefox is great, I am very happy with it for 2 Years now. I am really looking forward to the upcoming release, which will gain substancially more ground against the competition. - Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Kimmo
"It's an inferior and crappy browser compared to Opera"
No explanation. Just a fanboy's unjustified shouting.
"(The stupid Digg sheeple are gonna digg me down now, of course.)"
I will digg down any idiot who makes a point without explaining it to a suitable degree. You comment equates to "Opera is better, you are wrong.". It is not properly explained - buried. - Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look... others have britney spears and those... other.. We have Steve Jobs. It's just how the world works.
- vdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And not ads. Adblock+ FTW.
- sulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IMHO the only way to gain such an increase would me to make corporations install Firefox on their machines. It would be great if by default "IE Tab" add-on was integrated into Firefox and Firefox could automagically detect ActiveX and other IE-only crap on websites and switch rendering engine without interacting with user. This would keep far less secretaries and grannies in corporate world from using Firefox.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In other news, Crucial posts record profits for Q4 of '06.
- MannaPC, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@praveenmarkandu
Most of that stuff is inaccurate, general propaganda, out dated or just stuff most newbies wouldn't know. I only saw one thing on that whole list that was correct =P. - Onibus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@praveenmarkandu
Notice how they don't compare IE6/7 to Firefox in many categories.
I also scoff at the fact that they never show how many vunerabilities IE has compared to Firefox, they just show the number of unpatched issues for FireFox. There are many unpatched/unpublished vunerabilities with IE/Windows/anything that aren't fixed within 6 months.
I also lol'd at start up times. The number of add-ons affect the speed of loading. Oh, and just so you know, Internet Explorer has been around a lot longer than Firefox. Despite small issues that have yet to be fixed (memory leak), Firefox offers a lot more customization and features that IE7 is trying to capture. - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just blocked the Apple category, which unfortunately took like 80% of the frontpage stories with it. Now I get new stories every 30 minutes if I'm lucky :P
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes man!... And I am spreading the good word of Thunderbird to my clients!
I've been using Thunderbird now for at least a year, and found it to be excellent.
The security (Junk and Phishing) work flawlessly, and the ability to easily backup the data (unlike Outlook
which scatters it all over your hdisk...) is nice. And with the Thunderbird Portable version I can take my
Thunderbird on the road along with my Portable Firefox.
I just installed 'Lightning' which gives Thunderbird a calender and planner, which I find VERY useful for
planning out days, weeks and even months. - FreakyPhil31, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I apologize to Opera users. Seems that those pop-ups were from sites thst I had visited. I guess I use Opera after all!!!
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"From this point of view Opera is more bloated because everything is already integrated and you can't uninstall unnecessary feature"
Actually, you are wrong. All those extra features are hidden by default and you won't notice them unless you enable them yourself. Also, Opera is smaller than Firefox (not the version with 50 languages or so, as languages take up a lot of space, but the English version). So you get a smaller, faster program with more features that don't get in the way.
Hardly "bloated". - Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow this thread has helped me identify 7 people to block/report. Awesome :) we should keep posting firefox articles so I can weed out the retards.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/ben/archives/009749.html
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Memory_Leak - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with h3nry, pretty much all the websites except a few that are designed with ActiveX, work fine with FF.
You should install the IE Tab which will allow you to put IE in its place.... a tab.. lol
Needless to say, you can add that 'IE Only' site to the IE Tabs' list of sites, so when you re-visit the site, IE Tab
knows it needs to be used for it, and FF will automagically use the IE tab for that site. This is a VERY nice
feature, so you don't have to keep switching rendering engines for a site or remember to do so. - opticwind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My big complaint with Firefox? Not enough support from designers. I'm well aware that this isn't Mozilla's fault, but it's a fact that IE guarantees you success in opening a page.
- spasms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although Firefox has been increasing market share, you may want to read this:
"Watch out Firefox - Here Comes Maxthon!" - http://paralleldivergence.com/2007/01/11/watch-out-firefox-here-comes-maxthon/ - sleepyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1trim on minimize is a gimmick, it's on and it doesn't work. if you check memory usage through processxp, it remains the same minimized or maximized. oh and my addons are fine.. =
