- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm definitely seeing much less memory usage in 1.5.0.1
- jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Darth then you probably have something wrong with your profile.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2----However I've still waiting on the "Open up two or more pages with flash ads and cpu usage rockets to a solid 100%" fix.
Use flashblock so they never get loaded in the first place.
http://flashblock.mozdev.org/
You can easily "whitelist" sites that need to have flash active. - spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2----Darth then you probably have something wrong with your profile.
Totally agree. If things seem really messed up, nuking your profile and starting fresh can work wonders. I've only had to to do it once and the improvement was very noticeable. - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The leaks are standard bitch items. They're there but sometimes its not FF, its an extension. I suggest removing all extensions then testing your system.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Use flashblock so they never get loaded in the first place."
Agreed. For me, Flash only runs when I allow it. Nice extension, especially coupled with AdBlock. - spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1---"Does it still crash once, twice or more times a day?"
I'm a fairly heavy tabs user and would have to say "no" in my case. But then again, I tend to avoid heavy extension/flash use and I think this is a huge cause of instability/memory leakage. - mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ BassCadet:
They are called Deer Park so that people do not confuse the stable versions (Firefox) with the still-in-development-and-probably-buggy versions (Deer Park). - multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does it still crash once, twice or more times a day?"
At most Firefox will crash like once a month for me. I leave it open for days, sometimes have two windows open with tabs open in them when I'm bouncing between something for fun and something I'm trying to learn.
I have yet to have a problem with memory leaks. - aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good on fixing the leaks, the beauty of open source.
However I've still waiting on the "Open up two or more pages with flash ads and cpu usage rockets to a solid 100%" fix. Definitely puts a kink in the tabbed browsing experience (as flash ads are now quite common).
Aggies - cg0def, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure why but java causes serious memory problems with firefox. If a site uses java and you close the tab the java vm still continues to run and stays open for as long as you have firefox open. If you ask me this is stupid and should have been fixed long ago. Besides being a potential security problem it slowly eats up your ram. Seems to be to a lesser extent in firefox 1.5.01 but the problem is still there.
If the mozilla team doesn't do something about this Sun will deffinitelly ***** on their nicelly ordered bed on of these days ( excuse my french ) - Xecuter2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm at 226mb and climbing... but that's only after I installed the extension Inforss, it has a massive memory leak ..... but I like it anyway
- feanor512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Undoclosetab 20051204 works fine for me on 1.5.0.1.
- Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does it still crash once, twice or more times a day?"
It crashes for me about once in three weeks. - soundman414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well i have had many times especially when viewing multiple tabs and media filled pages where it would have so much memory usage it would lock firefox up... something i never had a problem with 1.0. i do hope that in 1.5.0.2 that they try to alieviate this problem.
- pacificdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uh... yeah... i'm still only at 90megs with 20 tabs... with 1.5 and with 1.5.0.1
- veracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Average of around 55 MB in 1.5, now it's about 40 or less. Great job.
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THANK YOU!!!!!
My firefox was crashing often after a while. It wasn't slow once it was started but it had some problems. It definately is taking less memory now.
I have 1 GB ram minimum in my machines. Lucky I had that memory to spare. - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, Memory Usage != (Does not equal) Memory Leak.
High memory usage can be caused by a lot of things such as viewing large images, flash, java, etc. This doesn't mean the browser is leaking memory. A memory leak is when a browser is using memory and does not release it when it is no longer needed. This takes a lot of diagnostics (and I beleive one such tool is linked on the page above.)
Having an SUV with 12mpg while a compact gets 25mpg does not mean the SUVs tank is leaking gas. - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I reverted back to 1.5 because the undo close tab extension doesn't support 1.5.0.1. Any alternatives?
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the problem is that certain rich content is staying resident in the RAM cache, Firefox doesn’t always remove it when you close the page. Folks with memory issues in 1.5 ought to check out the Cache Status extension, I find it very helpful in this matter.
http://urlx.org/mozilla.org/d58f - vanlandw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i remember using 1.0 and using at the MOST 50mb of memory for windows firefox. using 1.5.0.1 i get 102,000 instantly....this is on a pretty cleaned up laptop as well. odd
- j0dnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god damnit, it gets to like at the moment it's like 220,000 K with 12 tabs, and one of them has a java applet, i think i should open a window specifically for digg, 9 tabs just for digg,
but yeah, it's smaller with 1.5.0.1 - burningheretic6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its better... a little anyway, hopefully they will fix more of the memory leaks next release
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god damnit, it gets to like at the moment it's like 220,000 K with 12 tabs, and one of them has a java applet, i think i should open a window specifically for digg, 9 tabs just for digg,
god damned, are you honestly telling me you are USING all 12 of those tabs, and OF COURSE you're gonna use tons of rams with that kind of usage
me personally I went from 300 megs to 44megs right now and I've had this instance of Firefox open for a day now, I leave it open for gmail notifier - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never have any problems with this.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, goodie. I'm routinely up to ~60mb usage during a typical session.
- wingzinco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen a great improvement on both Mac and PC. A HUGE difference on my Mac...I know there were more problems than memory leaks with this however.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about Mozilla/Seamonkey?
- MortenAaserud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kokobaroko OPERA doesn't have ad-block i can't go back to ads
- RyanJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@akinder is Firefox was arround 6 years ago then you could make a comprasion but seeing as it was not there is no comparison.
Too add to that MS' intergration of the tab system into IE7 will give a few people a surprise on the memory use front.
Ryan Jones - Zukunft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been on for about 4 hours with firefox and I haven't closed it at all. Its running at 135,000k
Not bad - spamdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0142MB right now.... and often climbs over 300!
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@RyanJones "is Firefox was arround 6 years ago then you could make a comprasion but seeing as it was not there is no comparison."
Oh really? I suppose you're right, since you know, they didn't start working on, and released Moz 0.6 fall of 2000.
http://www.mozilla.org/roadmap/roadmap-25-Sep-2000.html
Damn, I guess I missed it by one year, 5 years then, does that make you happy? - mynameiswerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My VM memory has gone down, other than that it's been just a slight improvement.
With one window open, no tabs (after about an hour of usage)... http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/4216/ffmemory2nq.png - mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1""Does it still crash once, twice or more times a day?""
I've been using it for a year and it hasn't crashed even once. Memory leak with 1.5 (much better now), but not one crash. I'd suggest you try downloading 1.5.1, unistall and delete all your settings (that would be in your profile under Documents & settings), reinstall and install one extension at a time, slowly, to make sure it isn't one of them.
"I love how people think firefox is such a great alternative to IE (which it is), but they turn a blind eye to the fact that firefox still crashes and has problems like playing embedded video."
As I just said, it's never crashed on me. And embedded video? The only video it won't play for me are Windows Media-only files, which is because I don't have Widnwos Media installed. - jaydee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea memory leaks are still pissing me off, but not nearly as much as seeing the download plugin screen everytime an embeded video should be displayed. It doesn't recognise the plugin at BBC.co.uk (media player) so i just end up switching to IE to browse that site.
If firefox is eating too much RAM then just shut it down or kill it from Task manager and start again, it really isn't that much of a big deal.
I did suspect that java was not unloading though and this is more likely the cause of the memory usage build up. Thats not a leak though its just crap SW design - cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0still using alot. cant tell they fixed anything. good thing i have a gig of ram.
- amitpagarwal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How to fix Memory Leak and High CPU usage issues in Firefox 1.5
http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/01/solutions-to-common-firefox-15.html - simd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"two tabs = 183 MB."
14 tabs = about 100Mb for me right now. IE7, with identical 14 tabs, is running around 90Mb.
Definite memory improvement for me in FF, but I've also removed a lot of extensions I didn't use. Still problems with Flash. - xtreme777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0two tabs = 183 MB. I don't see any improvement at all except since i've updated my crashes have went from 0 to 2 a day. Maybe by fixing leaks elsewhere, they opened up some more.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0firefox 1.5+ ***** SUCKS. i can hardly do anything without crashing like crazy now..
- mdew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0estacado, tabmix plus supports undotab, and lots of other goodies
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Absolutely no problems, maybe crashes once every week (far less than IE), normally when I am trying to open another program and doing other things in FF at the same time. Mind you, I do have a Gig and a half of RAM in an Inspiron XPS, so even if it is sucking it up, I don't notice.
And for the Dell hater above, get a life. I suppose you run an overpriced Alienware machine, or DRM'd Sony, or, now I have it, a hot pink ibook with Hello Kitty stickers on it... - cbdgr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1status: dripping
- ntrsfrml, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is BS..Upgraded to 1.5.0.1..Only 1 page(digg.com) open at the moment and look @ Task Manger >> http://img362.imageshack.us/my.php?image=firefoxmemoryleakbs2rw.jpg
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I love how people think firefox is such a great alternative to IE (which it is), but they turn a blind eye to the fact that firefox still crashes and has problems like playing embedded video. Reminds me of mac zealots.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Funny how the guys from FF always blamed the extensions for memory leaks and now we see that FF was indeed leaking lots of memory.
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Good on fixing the leaks, the beauty of open source."
So if Microsoft or Opera had memory leaks and had them fixed 6 YEARS after the fact, it would be what.. "HAHA LOL M$ stupid IE took 6 years BECAUSE ITS NOT OSS"
You Mozilla apologists are hilarious. -
