"How do I install this cool stuff into the internet on my computer?" - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They missed Adblock (Plus) and NoScript; two extensions I always install.
"Google Maps Mousewheel Zooming: This script lets you use a scroll wheel to zoom in and out on maps at maps.google.com."
Google added that recently. No need for Greasemonkey for that now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I didn't know about some off these extensions. Thanks for sharing
- mdew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7what? no adblock extension? or noscript?
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I remember back in the day digg was full of "The Best firefox extensions that you MUST have" lists. They were starting to get annoying...
Regardless, it's good to see a list like this after a while to educate people of what's out there and what's new. - porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The most useful extensions I use and recommend:
+ Web developer extension
+ Adblock extension
+ Filterset.G Adblock addition extension - mdmadph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3one of the neatest features of the Mozilla Suite, back when I used to use it, was the ability to open up a new tab by entering a new URL into the address bar and then pressing Ctrl-Enter. To this date, I haven't found anything to replicate this behaviour -- anyone know of a way?
- jamesspelt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't digg this down, I would vote IETab the most useful extension I've ever installed.
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I don't use most of the listed extensions. So here are some more:

http://www.webshotspro.com/digg/ - Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its an OK list, but come on. clip notes from websites? take screenshot of websites?
why not combine those two in the amazing Scrapbook extension?
just right click and do Capture Page and it saves entire page with all images physically on your hard drive. Handy for pages that often dynamically change, or pages that might be taken down soon, or saving an article that needs a log in to read (using BugMeNot, another extension that should've made the top 10 list, IMO). It's even handy if god forbid you're at a dial-up connection, you can scrapbook a whole bunch of pages, then go offline and read the sites at a later time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Ctrl+tab will switch to the next tab, ctrl+shift+tab to switch back.
Personally, i like the swifttabs extension, which lets u remap the switch tab keys (to something easier, like f2 and f4).
Ctrl+click on a link to open it in a new tab. - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm sure that any self-described geek probably already knows about these extensions, if for no other reason than most we mentioned in a similar article that hit the front page last week, and last month...
I'm not crying "dupe, dupe!!!" or anything, but I'm kind of over people publishing lists of their favorite extensions as news.
Newsflash! Half of these are actually among the 10 most downloaded (as listed on Mozilla's site), and I use them too! - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Get the Nightly Tester Tools. Compatibility can be overridden safely on most extensions; for example, PasswordMaker says 1.5.* - 2b2 so won't work with 2rc1 (or a 2.0 nightly). NTT fixes this.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/966/ - mrgono3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have it but I don't see any big changes at all. Its link of cool though because it shows how long it took for the page to load.
- kcbnac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ctrl + Page Down - switch right (If viewing furthest right tab, jumps around to the left)
Ctrl + Page Up - switch left (If viewing furthest left tab, jumps around to the right) - SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The Tab enhancer would be good... i don't know how i used to surf w/o tabs.
Kinda related question... is there a keyboard shortcut to tab through firefox tabs?
Also, is there an easier way to open a hyperlink in a new tab other than right click?
Just a few things i've been wondering. - Bigbro69, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Suppose those are more 'standard' extentions, while this list was made to add to additional lists with things that mainly geeks would use.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"Ctrl+tab will switch to the next tab, ctrl+shift+tab to switch back."
Also, if you don't wish to cycle, try Ctrl+[number] to go to that tab number. - z00pedup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1nice extensions thanx..
have u guys used FasterFox? Does it actually improve loading times? - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2none seem to work with 2.0 . for now the firefox 2 rc is so fast and stable ill do w/o extentions for a while
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Also note that one of the suggested extension's (Tab Mix Plus) session saving feature on crashes is part of the Firefox 2 core functionality.
- MarkHarrison, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"None of them work on FF 2"...
They may well do, but FF assumes they won't...
Yes, this is one of the most annoying things as a FF extension developer. You're meant to include the "list of versions you've tested this on" as part of the package.
The trouble is, if your version of FF isn't in that list, then FF will simply tell you the extension isn't compatable.
This gives us two options:
1: Jump on every new version of FF, test, reissue the extension (within minutes, or the early adopters start complaining) and generally take on a huge burden.
2: Don't bother, just mark up the extension as working with a "future-proof" list of FF versions, and hope.
For "corporate extensions", then option #1 is clearly the right choice. For the odd little extension I've written, and then made available, it's been creating a rod for my own back keeping this up to date!

- ditch the poorly written extensions
- toss the Pentium Pro

Pity it doesn't work with 2.0RC1 - Simus1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I used Screengrab! for several weeks. It works well but cannot capture long webpages.
Pearl Crescent Page Saver Basic captures even very, very long pages flawlessly (so far).
http://pearlcrescent.com/products/pagesaver/
Another screen capture extension called Snapper makes the job of capturing only a chosen rectangular part of the screen very easy (simple click-and-drag).
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2703/ - pezholio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yeah, it's in the new version, you couldn't do it before, I found this out accidentally the other day!
- kayjay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Google Maps Mousewheel Zooming: This script lets you use a scroll wheel to zoom in and out on maps at maps.google.com.
--> AFAIK thats already possible without using hacks. i recently used google maps and zoomed in and out using mousewheel. - vibez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Good list. I especially liked screengrab

To cycle through tabs use CTRL+ TAB
To open a link in a new (background) tab, hold CTRL will clicking on the link.
Hope that helps :o)

- Dunce, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Hey thanks for the tip!
As I am a long time Firefox user I havent ever known about this option.
Cheers - IronKurton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I don't know about GreaseMonkey. He named two things ("_blank must die" and adblock from about.com) which can be achieved in other ways. Yes, I see the potential. I might go check it out.
As a side note, Firefox 1.5 has the "open new windows in tabs instead" feature.
Blocking ads -- and not just from about.com, but also from other sites, especially suspicious/malicious ones -- can be done by updating the hosts file on your machine (for linux/OS X it is in /etc/hosts, and for windows it is in C:Windowssystem32driversetchosts or C:Winnt... if you're on W2K, which you shouldn't be). Anyway, just google hosts file, and you will find tons of entries that point the ad/bad servers to localhost. Coincidentally, this doesn't work if you're on a domain, and if anyone knows how to get around it without modifying the hosts file on the domain server (since I don't have access to it), I'd be forever grateful. Hm, could this be done from GreaseMonkey on the browser level?
Personally, I have installed:
Tab X - use it all the time, and it is lean n' clean without any other extensions
Add n Edit Cookies - never use it
Gmail Notifier - use it at work where pop3 access isn't available
DownThemAll - hardly ever use it, it's not as useful as you'd think
BugMeNot - i don't think this even works
FlashBlock - the best one of the bunch - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"Tab X - use it all the time, and it is lean n' clean without any other extensions"
That functionality is also part of Firefox 2.0, as well as it having an "undo close" feature.
If one doesn't like the close buttons on the tabs, that feature can be tweaked in about:config: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons
In Firefox 2, tabs can of course still be closed by middle clicking them too, and not having to use these buttons. - zouden, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1And my favorite, the TabScroller extension lets you cycle through tabs by holding the right-mouse-button and using the scrollwheel. I find this the best way to switch tabs.
