- epj3, on 12/09/2007, -4/+41When I saw portable, I went to grab my Motorola Q and excitedly wait for it to install.
Then I realized what it meant by portable and now I am disappointed. - ThatsUnpossible, on 12/09/2007, -7/+31A web browser is probably the most complicated application you run on your computer. Think about everything it has to be able to handle. It's basically an operating system unto itself.
- Weasel22, on 12/09/2007, -3/+24I have an honest question... I am an Opera user, but have tried Firefox and admired its extensibility. However, its speed and memory problems left much to be desired. How will Firefox 3.0 compare to Opera as far as speed and memory usage?
- Soave, on 12/09/2007, -1/+19"Want to test out Firefox 3 beta without messing up all of your precious Firefox 2 settings?"
That's exactly what I've been wanting to do, so thanks a lot for posting this. - vault, on 12/09/2007, -0/+13On OS X it dramatically improved that with ff 3 beta...I can leave it open overnight and it doesn't go past 200 mb, whereas before it would go that high after a few hours. I didn't use this portable version though, just backed up my profile and installed the beta.
- mooninite, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11More than enough power.
- MicrosoftBob, on 12/09/2007, -1/+10Sorry. Digg down.
- Roger, on 12/09/2007, -5/+14You have a Windows Mobile phone. I'm sure you're used to disappointment.
- vault, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8why?
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+7I love portableapps.com
- epj3, on 12/09/2007, -1/+8Actually between syncing sweetly with gmail, syncing automatically with my google calendar (which I've been using extensively for at least 9 months), a very customizable user interface, and tethering my laptop via pdanet (and getting around 1.5mbps download/500 kbps upload) I've been satisfied.
It's sure a hell of a lot better than my old blackberry (7130e) - bogdanglushak, on 12/09/2007, -3/+9Really cool feature for testers :thumb up:
- KloroFormd, on 12/09/2007, -3/+9Firefox 3 probably isn't faster than Opera, but it's definitely faster than FF2.
- wolf08, on 12/09/2007, -1/+6No.
- drummer1189, on 12/09/2007, -1/+6you obviously didn't understand his argument. he was saying a browser is complicated, that doesn't mean it has to be huge.
- HigherLogic, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Will Firefox 3 be doing something similar to Opera's Synchronization? I've really enjoyed this feature while testing out Opera 9.5, being able to use Opera on any computer just be connecting to the online service and having my settings there too. While it's not a perfect system yet, I think more browsers should take this route.
- kingofpenguins, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Up you go!!!
- Laxaloot, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4This is SPARTA!
- Makaveli604, on 12/09/2007, -13/+17200 MB for a ***** browser?
- ultrafez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4No... the portable editions are completely self-contained, so as long as you run them from separate folders nothing will be messed up.

http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_port ... - BigBrother87, on 12/09/2007, -4/+8Buried. Glad it's portable, don't need the blog spam. How hard would it have been post a link to sourceforge? Or even a blog with a direct link?
- MicrosoftBob, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3I do too. I usually donate every time I download from the site. Jut a few bucks but I'm sure if most visitors/downloaders did this it would make a difference and keep portableapps going and improving.
- KevinO, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Yes, it is enough to run Firefox. I would suggest using the current release (Firefox 2) while Firefox 3 is still in Beta.
- DarkDx, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4In memory management it's surely better than firefox 2 but I don't know if it's better than opera. Opera still wins rendering pages.
- doshindude, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4"thumb up?" are you from youtube or something? this is DIGG.
- 35263526, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3What, he'd be better off with an iPhone? I have a Windows Mobile phone and it's by far the most open and versatile platform on the market.
- ultrafez, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3It completely depends on how many extensions and tabs you have open.
- hadak, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3i actually had to read the release notes to figure out what the hell they changed. it's not so apparent on first glance, but after reading them you kind of go "oh! i see!"... there are some very nice improvements. I'm excited for the final version - so long as it's faster and more lightweight than firefox2, which has become somewhat bloated
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4/bs,firefox 2 has neve gone above 150mb for me most of the time it was like 50-70
- kingofpenguins, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3It's people like you that make me really hate digg. Oh, and by the way, you're blocked now.
- MrPig, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2That is correct. Firefox 3 doesn't really render pages any faster, however, it uses WAY less ram. I've never had mine go over 138MB (on windows). And that's with around 12 tabs open.
Also note: I have config.trim_on_minimize set to true... so that may help. - Breepee, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Foxmarks.
Currently only bookmarks, but extension synchronization would be very cool indeed. - EtherGnat, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2I can't digg you up enough. 640k ought to be enough for anybody.
- piesforyou, on 12/09/2007, -2/+4A highly informative post, well done.
If you didn't sense the sarcasm; Why did he fail? What do you have to contribute to this discussion? - PocketWatch, on 12/09/2007, -2/+4Direct Download Link:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/Fire ... - allyant, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Try Google Browser Sync works fine for me.
- osbjmg, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Digg pages never fully load and memory usage isn't as bad as CPU usage now... tsk
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Heh. I've had it hit 800MB on me at work. However, that's primarily the fault of the Flash plugin, or weather.com's new Flash-based weather map. I accidentally left that page open and the animation looping for most of the day. When I switched back to Firefox after about 5 hours, there was horrendous disk thrashing for a good 10 minutes...
- vdog, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Go easy on the guy, he's new here.
Digg doesn't work like that, Dshumb. We digg stories up or down based on their merits, not with a sense of a favour being returned. Linking to a story in another thread is considered spamming. Don't do it.
If your story is good, it'll make the front page, don't worry. - Kamill85, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1This is C-C-C-C...
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1The portable version is much slower so don't base your opinions on that.
- EtherGnat, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Minimo is the Windows Mobile port of Firefox. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
- Wrathernaut, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I've been using beta 1. It didn't touch my FF2 installation beyond importing stuff. I can still start up ff2 if I want, but the page zoom is implemented so well in FF3 it would take a lot to draw me away.
- epj3, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Exactly - my phone might be a little pokey through the menu's but it runs everything great.... INCLUDING third party app's ;-)
- Burn, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1This is DDDIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!
- JohnM5, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Firefox 3 will contain a much better bookmarks api and tags(labels), so something like that should be possible. I do like Gmarks though :)
- EtherGnat, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I've never noticed a difference in speed between the two. Are you running it from a thumb drive? That will slow things significantly, but it's due to the speed of the media, not the version of Firefox.
- Cimlite, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1There is an easy way to test all programs like this... just get Sandboxie. It's a program (free, with a small 5 second timer coming up once per start) that lets you install anything into a "sandbox". It can read anything from your computer, but all writes are sent to the sandbox.
http://www.sandboxie.com/
If you actually want to use the "portability", as in run the programs from a USB stick or such... you can do that with Sandboxie as well. It's much easier using a real portable version of the software you want though. - inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I think he is being sarcastic guys...
