Firefox 3 RC1 Now Available
mozilla.com — I was actually expecting to still see beta 5 when I went to the developers page, but was happily surprised.
- 4628 diggs
- digg it
- BryanJK, on 05/17/2008, -19/+242if your running on any of the betas, it should have already screamed at you to update :P
- naylor83, on 05/17/2008, -15/+29Here's a hot tip for using the new location bar more efficiently:
Use Tab, Return instead of Down, Return to select the first suggestion in the dropdown list. It's a lot easier when you're hands are in typing position.- nd_miller, on 05/17/2008, -5/+41Who or what are you replying to?
- YoctoYotta, on 05/17/2008, -31/+10Your mom, I believe.
- huntermaclean, on 05/17/2008, -6/+2That was unnecessary.
- naylor83, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8Since I had a tip I wanted many to see I *shock* just blatantly ignored the general reply logic!
- Thomaschaaf, on 05/17/2008, -2/+15although I don't know who your replying to that was a good tip :)
- SLockhart, on 05/17/2008, -2/+9You mean Tab, Enter. It's not a typewriter.
- masterthiefster, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4On the Apple keyboard it is Return, so it's possible he's a Mac user. Oddly enough, the same keyboard uses Enter for the number pad equivalent...
- knetworx, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Apple should change. The Enter key doesn't return the tape back to the beginning of the line anymore, that's why it's not called the Return key. IIRC, the Return key on a typewriter didn't go to the next line, it just returned back to the beginning of the current line (like a Home key.) Or am I getting that backward? Maybe it went to the next line, and you had to push the tape back to the beginning of the line... Typewriters should change their Return key to be a Next Line key!
- djh816, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2now if we could just get some pixel scrolling for the two finger trackpads...
- rigorious, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1wow.. this just haven't been included in Every browser since the beginning of the interwebs.
- naylor83, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1That's quite possible. But now when you can't use true autocomplete it is more important to know.
- nd_miller, on 05/17/2008, -5/+41Who or what are you replying to?
- moocow1452, on 05/17/2008, -10/+3That's funny, it's not on the backports yet...
- linksus, on 05/17/2008, -1/+33I didnt get prompted to update from the beta. had to manually ask it :) But yay thanks, its fixed some odd flash issues ive had :)
- cliffr39, on 05/17/2008, -0/+10I didn't get any notice either... glad i saw this article.
- Justblaze, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2did those issues include crashing your PC after using/playing a flash video as mine did?
- DustinHill, on 05/18/2008, -2/+1I wish it had fixed mine. Most flash players don't even properly load; forcing me to switch rendering engines.
- DustinHill, on 05/19/2008, -1/+1At least two people thought that my comment was bad enough to digg down. Could somebody tell me why? I love firefox and am obviously using it. I'm not being outlandish in my claims. Was it the use of the semicolon?
- rpgmaker, on 05/17/2008, -4/+11Here waiting for the Ubuntu 8.04, according to Ars they will update me to the final release when its out.
- pushmouse, on 05/17/2008, -4/+12Just you?
- fjf314, on 05/17/2008, -1/+6Thanks for the heads up. I was curious if the repos would have the RCs or if they would just wait for the final release.
- mrsteveman1, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8Why wait?
I would think any updates to a beta browser in a release operating system should be released immediately. - rpgmaker, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1I think that a beta browser shouldn't have been included in a LTS release at all.
- mrsteveman1, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8Why wait?
- Eucolastic, on 05/17/2008, -10/+0haha yeah bro :p
- imacbook, on 05/17/2008, -67/+2Thankfully I'm not and I'm using the far superior Safari to do my web browsing. You guys should suck it and see.
www.apple.com/safari- thegreatanti, on 05/17/2008, -3/+18How about swallowing an axe?
- OrangeSoda31, on 05/17/2008, -24/+3Yes, Safari is far superior... And I just dugg you up.
- seventoes, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3Congradulations. Want a cookie?
- t0x2c, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5According to the breakdown you're the only one.
- SSUK, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9This is why no one likes Mac zealots. You give Apple a bad name.
- bdorry, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3I love my mac and all, but if you could stop giving us mac users a bad name it would be great.
- knetworx, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Haha...douche got buried. You know what's funny? Even though this comment is lame and pointless, I'll still get buried less than you did for trying to promote Safari!
- Alex.w, on 05/17/2008, -2/+6Nope, got up about an hour ago and have been browsing since, no notice. Odd.
Glad I saw this TBH! - Pixelpaws, on 05/17/2008, -3/+9A lot of people (like me) were waiting for a formal release candidate, though. So now I'll finally give v3 a test drive.
- dood, on 05/17/2008, -2/+4It did not. Should I file a bug report on the update notification service?
- comrade693, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4No. It can take up to 24 hours for the update service to notice there's an update. Have it check manually and you should get the update.
- robthom, on 05/17/2008, -26/+2Firefox sucks. Buried.
- skylarsutton, on 05/18/2008, -1/+4"you're"... not your
- known, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1You may download Portable FF at http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_port ...
- naylor83, on 05/17/2008, -15/+29Here's a hot tip for using the new location bar more efficiently:
- niteskunk, on 05/17/2008, -4/+376Is it just me, or does this new release start up REALLY fast compared to older versions?
- hktapew0rm, on 05/17/2008, -2/+48I think it does.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/17/2008, -6/+55Typically Beta's have more detailed error reporting stuff added in, which can weigh a program down a little especially on initial load. They probably pulled it out for the RC. That's what she said.
- priegog, on 05/17/2008, -4/+26Ah michael refrained in this week's episode... it almost made me feel sad.
- DjArcadian, on 05/17/2008, -1/+14I think they tried to do too much in this weeks episode. It seemed rush. There was enough content for 2 or 3 episodes.
- heliox, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8I agree Dj. I was expecting something big, and were only left with Dwight and the prude making out. The best part IMO was the opening and the phone hijacking.
- priegog, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5haha, I'm pretty sure they were having sex.
- xino, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1What show are you talking about?
- foldor, on 05/17/2008, -4/+41You can't "that's what she said" your own comment...
- ligyron, on 05/17/2008, -4/+19Clearly you can
- xBreakdownx, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5If Michael Scott does then i can too.
- comrade693, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5Actually, Mozilla doesn't ship debug builds so there's no extra error reporting in any of them.
- priegog, on 05/17/2008, -4/+26Ah michael refrained in this week's episode... it almost made me feel sad.
- wizard710, on 05/17/2008, -4/+27Yeah better than version 2.0
- sliggy, on 05/17/2008, -5/+30Obvious poster is obvious.
- otros, on 05/18/2008, -2/+4tell that to the vista upgrade
- Pyroteq, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1OMG LOL YOU MADE A VISTA JOKE!!! ROFLMAO
- sliggy, on 05/17/2008, -5/+30Obvious poster is obvious.
- joearchy, on 05/17/2008, -12/+7Even moreso, if your using Windows, set a dekstop icon shortcut to prefetch it, have target set as "C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox 3/firefox.exe" /prefetch:1
This speeds my opening of FF3 on my PC to roughly .024 Milliseconds =]- AvidPreatorian, on 05/17/2008, -1/+27wow now that you really freed up your time you can almost blink once more per minute
- iamvahe, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6What does prefetch do exactly?
- johnkelly84, on 05/17/2008, -1/+9Lies.
http://blogs.msdn.com/ryanmy/archive/2005/05/25/42 ... - lipak, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4That's crazy. I was just going to say "and the misinformation continues" - with the same link.
- d37r17u5, on 05/17/2008, -2/+21It feels much faster in rendering pages as well.
- Pixelpaws, on 05/17/2008, -2/+10It might be in part because a lot of extensions haven't yet been updated for FF3. Of the thirty or so I was using with 2, only ten are supported yet. Hopefully the others will follow soon.
- Pritchard, on 05/17/2008, -3/+3I wonder what happened between the b4 and RC1...
- gamerjon, on 05/17/2008, -2/+18B5...
IETab doesn't work with RC1, for now..
- gamerjon, on 05/17/2008, -2/+18B5...
- bizchris, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4I guess given your "speed" comment, this as good a place to ask as any (correct me if I'm wrong, please):
I'm an extensive user of Del.icio.us (we're talking 10's of thousands of bookmarks), and really really want to use the bookmarks functionality from within Firefox. However, it only seems to find tags that have already sync'ed, and the bottom right corner always just says "Bookmark synching in progress..."
Given my high usage and the apparent snail's-pace synching, am I doomed to forever be dissatisfied with this one little (but critical) piece of functionality, or have other users run into this too and have a better suggestion?- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/17/2008, -5/+2The answer to your question is 42.
- DustinHill, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1This answer is even more obnoxious than rickrolling. You're not Adams and you never will be.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Sir, nothing is more obnoxious than rick rolling.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/17/2008, -5/+2The answer to your question is 42.
- MN1962, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8I've lost all my plugins so yes it does run faster.
- MN1962, on 05/17/2008, -1/+0It runs faster because all my addins are disabled. Despite this, which I am sure I will fix, it does seem really good and probably is faster. Everything still in the right place and better functionality where it is needed. Are we learning yet, Microsoft?
- stuf, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1I was about to say the same – it seems doing a few lightyears faster than before.
- Privil3g3, on 05/19/2008, -0/+2you realize a light-year is a distance right?
- hktapew0rm, on 05/17/2008, -12/+136This beta runs a lot faster for me. It starts a lot faster, as well.
- str1fe, on 05/17/2008, -5/+92Release Candidate != Beta
- TheDuckHat, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1It may be faster but I just want to be able to Command+Enter in the address bar to open a page in a new tab. Does this version fix that?
- ikkefc3, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1In Swiftfox on Linux, that does work.
- JohnM5, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5You can Alt+Enter in the address bar to open in a new tab
- scimitar91, on 05/18/2008, -0/+4and the color of the back button has been improved.

Jealous that the only job you can get is McDonalds? - Zalyster, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Is it bad that even thought I knew this was a Firefox article, and I've been thinking about Firefox while reading it, I still read Final Fantasy 3 when I read bratterscain's comment?
:(
- ligyron, on 05/17/2008, -5/+3He's got to make money somehow. What's with all the haters on Digg? Now you're even trying to drive MrBabyMan away
- masamunecyrus, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1In the browser history dialog, did they remove the ability to sort by SITE? I can sort by about anything I can possibly think of, except for site; the closest thing is sort by location.

- HibikiRush, on 05/17/2008, -28/+14I was so excited about getting this, hoping to eliminate the frequent and random crashes I have been getting with FF3. It just happened again. I'm running 64-Bit Vista. Anyone else getting these crashes?
- Daniel0, on 05/17/2008, -3/+17Data Execution Prevention has been killing Firefox randomly on Vista for me in beta 5. I'm hoping this will put an end to it.
- coldfusion1970, on 05/17/2008, -8/+2Safari is your friend.
- romistrub, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5LOL except for the fact that it makes webpages look ridiculous by "antialiasing" (read: terrible blurring).
- coldfusion1970, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2Looks lubberly to me baby.
- coldfusion1970, on 05/17/2008, -8/+2Safari is your friend.
- Erkie, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9Certain plug-ins for Firefox can cause it to crash (yes, firebug, I'm talking about you).
- rishid, on 05/17/2008, -4/+2I have had problems with the location bar stops accepting input (basically enter does nothing) since Firefox 2, that bug still has not been squashed.
- DrHadr, on 05/17/2008, -2/+6Maybe a new keyboard would solve your problem
- Olivaise, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Dugg for truth.
- DrHadr, on 05/17/2008, -2/+6Maybe a new keyboard would solve your problem
- MattBD, on 05/17/2008, -2/+4I've had them in both Windows and Linux. Hope they update the Ubuntu repositories soon as Beta 5 is very prone to crashing. Also, apparently this is the stage when extension developers will start making their products available for Firefox 3 - I've missed Google Toolbar, Google Browser Sync and del.icio.us Bookmarks for too long...
- MWeather, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2del.icio.us bookmarks has a beta available in their yahoo group. Works great.
- WhereAmI, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I haven't had any problems with the ubuntu firefox beta 5 except when it comes to flash, which has always been a pain.
- DDMX, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2Yes, Firefox 3 does crash once in awhile - not often though, every few hours - for me.
Whatever, it'll get worked out - still betterr than the competition - strikes12, on 05/17/2008, -1/+0I get crashes when looking through complex sites with long lists like gmail and newzbin. Sometimes it goes out every 5 minutes. this is beta5 I'm talking about
- Zalyster, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Beta5 crashes for me on Leopard a lot.
I use 2 on XP though, I've been waiting for a stable(r) version for XP. Runs fine but it's much slower compared to B5. Can't wait to update.
- Daniel0, on 05/17/2008, -3/+17Data Execution Prevention has been killing Firefox randomly on Vista for me in beta 5. I'm hoping this will put an end to it.
- hypermite, on 05/17/2008, -15/+71updates make me smile.
- interrelate, on 05/17/2008, -5/+3What about Windows Updates?
- FDisk, on 05/17/2008, -13/+63Starts really fast. :)
- mrASSMAN, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Digg is much quicker with FF3! nice.
- kss42, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Not only is Digg faster now, but the endless-loading bug is gone too. Is this a consequence of the new Firefox, or the new comment system? Either way it is a welcome change.
- Burn, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1That was fixed for me as of Beta 4.
- kss42, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Not only is Digg faster now, but the endless-loading bug is gone too. Is this a consequence of the new Firefox, or the new comment system? Either way it is a welcome change.

- christianc, on 05/17/2008, -21/+2So! Cool!
- MrZaiko, on 05/17/2008, -21/+3It better perform faster, keep it lean
- sensor, on 05/17/2008, -6/+17I have a question, can you rename or delete the "Bookmarks Toolbar" from the bookmarks menu?
- tabledesk, on 05/17/2008, -27/+5Why do people insist on removing interface elements that are only useful?
- prophetpimp, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3get tiny menu and place the bookmark toolbar in the top most area. Much more superior UI.
- itsthebrod, on 05/17/2008, -4/+23Useful to you maybe. I never use it and I want it gone. That's the point of customization.
- secleinteer, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1I put it up on the top row, next to the "Help" menu button. It's a great way to save screen space.
- mvent2, on 05/17/2008, -2/+19Right click on the navigation toolbar, and untick Bookmarks Toolbar.
- picpak, on 05/17/2008, -7/+7He's asking to remove the Bookmarks Toolbar under the Bookmarks menu. You know, the one with "Smart Bookmarks". Do I really care what my recent tags were? I mean, seriously?
- HorseloverFat8, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2You can delete "Recently Tagged" by right-clicking and clicking delete on it if it bothers you.
- picpak, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Oh cool, I can delete the whole "Smart Bookmarks" folder if I want...not the Bookmarks Toolbar itself though.
- diggimator, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Most browsers have had this submenu in one form or the other in the bookmarks menu and it's not removable. Doesn't sound like a big issue to me.
- picpak, on 05/17/2008, -7/+7He's asking to remove the Bookmarks Toolbar under the Bookmarks menu. You know, the one with "Smart Bookmarks". Do I really care what my recent tags were? I mean, seriously?
- dn11, on 05/17/2008, -2/+3I have another question with regard to the bookmark toolbar in OSX - the favicons don't show up - they just appear as gray blocks. which is annoying, because I just use the favicons rather than the title. I haven't tried this release yet in OSX, so hopefully this is fixed.
- tehjarvis, on 05/17/2008, -1/+6I don't use OSX but I stumbled upon this the other day fixing the favicon from my site that wouldn't refresh in firefox: http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/04/30/how-to-add-fa ...
- dn11, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2cool thanks
- vault, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1The favicons are showing up for me on OS X in the bookmark bar.

- traherom, on 05/17/2008, -0/+14I personally always move the bookmark toolbar next to the menu bar so I still have the quick links, but they don't take up additional space.
To do it, have the bookmarks toolbar turned on, right click on the toolbar and choose customize, drag the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" next to the menus. You can then hide the bookmarks toolbar.- Pixelpaws, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3That's really clever. I'd never have thought to do that. Anything that adds more screen space for browsing is great in my book.
- Gerbil_Juice, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3Genius. I'd never thought of that either but I just did that after you mentioned it.
- doshindude, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6I don't like how you can't delete the "unfiled bookmarks" folder either, I'm kinda OCD on that kind of stuff.
- SuburbanBoy, on 06/18/2008, -0/+0"sensorsensor on 05/17/2008
I have a question, can you rename or delete the "Bookmarks Toolbar" from the bookmarks menu?"
Yes you can in your userChrome add:
#bookmarksToolbarFolderMenu {
display: none;
}
If you wish to remove the separators as well add:
#bookmarksToolbarFolderMenu + menuseparator {
display: none;
}
And both will be gone (Bookmarks Toolbar will still be in the Organise Bookmarks Library though).

- mvent2, on 05/17/2008, -9/+35People use Silverlight?
- kris33, on 05/17/2008, -3/+4Silverlight is great actually, but I'm boycotting it because the development tools only are available on Windows.

- ProSport07, on 05/17/2008, -7/+71I love the new address bar. Makes getting to my favorite sites so much faster. FireFox is my new default browser.

- zspitfire04, on 05/18/2008, -2/+2Opera was mine til now.

- aMammoth, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4True, but if they didn't, they wouldn't come out with new stuff to compete, and you'd end up with stale browsers.
- Jammerdelray, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2Not always true tho.
- zspitfire04, on 05/18/2008, -3/+1It's called Divine Selection. Hitler thought he was doing the same thing with people. hints the whole "Genetically Superior" thing. He figured kill off the bad and keep the good. If you take a look around, the technique is used just about EVERYWHERE. For example, why dont you have a mullet anymore?
- Gosunkugi, on 05/17/2008, -4/+3I don't know, I'm not feeling it. I just tried to get to Digg in the address bar and instead of being able to just type the first letter or two and then select the URL, I got a giant mess of old Digg articles.
- init100, on 05/17/2008, -1/+14That problem is solved by marking the Digg front page with a star. Then it always comes up first when you type "di".
- Gosunkugi, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Ah, thanks for that. I was aware of the adaptive learning part but not the star. I still think it's a bit unnecessary, really, but then I've been doing it the other way for like a decade so obviously anything new is going to come off as being really odd.
- comrade693, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I has adaptive learning, so the first few times it may not get it right, but over time it learns what you want when you type something.
- init100, on 05/17/2008, -1/+14That problem is solved by marking the Digg front page with a star. Then it always comes up first when you type "di".
- evilgeniuscow, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3The address bar is nice but I'm so used to the old one I wish I could change it back. Is there a setting somewhere I missed?
- cdawzrd, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6There's an addon to do that, search for "oldbar"
- BluAardvark, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1The oldbar extension only changes the look of the location bar, not the behavior. It's a step in the right direction, but it doesn't do it for me.
- cdawzrd, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6There's an addon to do that, search for "oldbar"
- darlyn, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2I've been using the Autocomplete Manager add-on for ages ... it has pretty much the same functionality as the Awesome Bar.
- stormgren, on 05/17/2008, -5/+140You mean it wasn't before? :(
- fLUx1337, on 05/17/2008, -2/+19Been running it about a week using nightly builds which just kept coming. Not sure much has changed between last week though, I guess they have just been squashing mini-bugs and putting finishing touches to everything....
All I need now is for my extensions to be supported for real, I'm forcing them to work but most feel broken in some way! :( - stellarceltic, on 05/17/2008, -17/+8Maybe it's just me, but Firefox is ssssslllllooooooowwwwww on my MacBook. I tried a bunch of different versions, but they constantly take 30 seconds to a minute to start up, and are just slow in general after that.
Any ideas?- GavinZac, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2Different versions?
- stellarceltic, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2By different versions I meant the different Beta releases.
- Stelex, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7Yup. Go to ~/Library/Applications Support/Firefox/Profiles// and copy move the file bookmarks.html to the Desktop. Now go up two or three levels and delete entire Firefox folder. This will get rid of your FF preferences, bad plugins or what not. Start the FF anew, then close. Go to the folder above and copy the bookmarks.html from the Desktop into it. Open FF again and enjoy.
- doubledowndan, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4This is good advice if nothing else works, but all of your settings will be gone with your old profile. I experienced a bit of slowness and just disabled my addons (one was firebug) and relaunched and things are back up to speed.
- Zalyster, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Runs great on my hackintosh with weaker specs than your Macbook. Guess Apple hardware ain't all that great huh...
- miguelandres, on 05/17/2008, -4/+3Firefox 3 is really fast on my 2GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook
- MWeather, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2It's tolerably fast on my 66mhz craptop. Better than anything else, except Dillo and Links/Links2
- YoctoYotta, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2Oh my, how many gigabytes of RAM do you have? How big is your screen!?!
=/
- n0odles, on 05/17/2008, -4/+2Stellarceltic follow this instructions on how to speed up Firefox, I know the screenshots are from XP, but it'll work on your Mac:

PC OWNS!
- GavinZac, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2Different versions?
- GRAVEWiSH, on 05/17/2008, -12/+4071/100 on ACiD3 test....what did beta5 get?
- mvent2, on 05/17/2008, -0/+99Same. They're not improving Acid3 at this stage, just fixing bugs before final release. It's too late for major changes.
- cornflakepirate, on 05/17/2008, -16/+6Also 71. :)
- HydrogenOxide, on 05/17/2008, -26/+469 On my version
2.16 GHz iMac running 10.4.11 - djk21108, on 05/17/2008, -19/+4I enjoy burying him without anyone telling him why his comment was so grossly silly.
- anchorman, on 05/17/2008, -1/+53Speed increases and memory leaks being plugged are two of the many improvements to FF3. So if you avoided using FF in the past for speed reasons, it's time to try out the latest release.
- luke16, on 05/17/2008, -6/+101Can this use addons like Adblock plus?
- kris33, on 05/17/2008, -4/+80yeah
- daniel2288, on 05/17/2008, -5/+34use the nightly testers tool addon and it lets all of your add ons work
- likwidfuzion, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Not all add-ons/extensions work even with the Nightly Tester Tools (e.g. FireFTP)
- dxgg, on 05/17/2008, -5/+10Use this: http://adblockplus.org/devbuilds/
Works great!- fliguy84, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4I just searched for 'adblock' using the add-on manager, installed it, restarted FF and it runs fine :)
- ridercologne, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2great! thanks for the tip!
- Satenru, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1Too bad the Mouse Gesture add-on doesn't work...
- Culyt, on 05/18/2008, -0/+0Theres an alternative gesture extension that works fine (actual its almost identical. to the Optimoz one)
http://www.xuldev.org/firegestures/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads ...- Burn, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1Not working with RC-1 yet.

- Culyt, on 05/18/2008, -0/+0Theres an alternative gesture extension that works fine (actual its almost identical. to the Optimoz one)
- TitanX13, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1some not all. adblock works but about 78% of my addons don't work again
- zongamin, on 05/19/2008, -2/+1'78%' - what a retarded thing to say.
- BlaenkDenum, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I'm hyped over this new release it really is awesome, but it sucks that it came the day right after all my plugins finally worked again on FF3b5 haha.
- Apoy, on 05/17/2008, -23/+1So that's why my firefox is so slow today.
- ryanschmidt, on 05/17/2008, -9/+6Anyone else having issues with flash videos not working? I installed the Flash 10 beta and now the videos work but I cannot click on them to fast forward, play, pause, rewind, nothing.
- doshindude, on 05/17/2008, -2/+30stop using a beta of flash?
- zoid, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Same here. Flash 10 worked fine until I upgraded to Firefox 3 RC1 and now I can not click on the controls in youtube. I'm on a G4 Mac if that's any help.
- dist0rti0n, on 05/17/2008, -6/+12Is the "show my tabs from last time option" broken for anyone else?
- leoedin, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3Try making sure the download manager is closed before you quit.
- Zirdante, on 05/17/2008, -8/+0Just shut down firefox with ctr + alt + del, and when you restart firefox it will say "want to open the tabs you had last time?"
- cinnix, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5A valid tech releated question asked in a valid tech related article, not mindless spam or a quick one-liner; Yet dist0rtion gets dugg down. Nice one guys!
Its also not appearing to work for me either in OS X, and command+clicking (control+click in windows) tabs switches focus to them, despite the option being disabled. I'm looking for a solution. - cinnix, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1On further inspection, I only seem to get this problem on User submitted links in the comments on Digg so far. It seems like command+clicking a link overides the users settings on links that have target="_blank"?
- dist0rti0n, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3I finally fixed it. I still had FireFox 2 installed, so I nuked that as well as my FireFox 3 installation. Then I deleted any remnant files and profiles and then reinstalled FireFox 3.
Works like a champ now.
- n0odles, on 05/17/2008, -1/+41If no major bugs are found on the Release Candidate 1, then this will be the Firefox 3.0 final release. It's really faster, and the UI seems to be tweaked to look a little better.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/17/2008, -4/+1The UI?
I was using Beta 5 and just updated right now, and the UI isn't any different.- srg13, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2There are some slight differences in the address bar etc.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Oh I use an addon that puts a page loading progress bar into the background of the address bar.
Might be affecting things.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/17/2008, -4/+1The UI?
- mattus, on 05/17/2008, -1/+43I've been following FF3's progress on the Mozilla Wiki for a while, and it's amazing how much collaborative work has gone into improving Firefox and squashing bugs. Kudos to the Firefox team for a job well done.
- Resolution, on 05/17/2008, -3/+8Nice to see that I can finally read messages in Yahoo! Mail. Also, the previous beta wouldn't work with my university blackboard system, but RC1 corrected this. Good deal.
- Soulglow, on 05/17/2008, -3/+7If any of you use the web developer tools add-on (was compatible in beta), it's not compatible. Just a heads up.
- MWeather, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2But does it work if you disable the compatibility check?
- icexe, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3actually, it does work. You just have to manually install the .xpi file from the developer's homepage http://chrispederick.com/work/web-developer/
(remember to uninstall it first if you already have it installed). - BlaenkDenum, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Firebug works great.
- lovespirals, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2thanks for the tip! i got it to work by uninstalling the plug in (then restarting firefox), and then installing the plug in fresh. i thought i'd be without it for a little while, but all is good!
- hustl3r, on 05/17/2008, -25/+1Still no Home Button...
- robbiekhan, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7Yes there is...
http://robbiekhan.co.uk/root/temp/firefox3_main.JP ...
This version loads faster, renders faster and is just better at everything.
I got all my extensions working by either updating them or by using nightly tester tools to override compatibility :) - mikeleeuk, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6I think you probably have to move it yourself if you've been using early betas. Right-click on the navigation toolbar, click customise and drag it from the bookmarks toolbar.
It moved on its own for me, but I think I did a clean install with Beta 5... - TheSwashbuckler, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6Dude, right click on the toolbar and select "Customize". See the "Home" button? Just drag it on to the toolbar - now you've got a home button...
- hustl3r, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4***** i never even noticed that..i'm a Firefox n00b, thanks.
- traherom, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3It was on the bookmarks toobar for a beta or two... you should be able to find it there. If not, then right click on the toolbar and find the Home button there.
And if that doesn't work, remove your preferences.
- robbiekhan, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7Yes there is...
- lucip, on 05/17/2008, -17/+0Just a test
- thegreatanti, on 05/17/2008, -3/+5Just a digdown.
- netneutrality, on 05/17/2008, -18/+2I've got some Windows 98 machines around here that are going to have to stay on Firefox 2.0.0.14. Bummer, nobody gives a penny of thought to 98 any more.
- mattus, on 05/17/2008, -0/+17That's 'cause it's ten years old! Most of the guys developing Firefox do this on their own time, and you can't expect them to support antiquated OSs indefinitely, especially when they probably have lots of security flaws.
- netneutrality, on 05/17/2008, -3/+2I'd still like to see somebody port Firefox to DOS just for the heck of it.
- tehjarvis, on 05/17/2008, -1/+6I read that as "just for the hack of it" and giggled, then realized I can't fully read...then frowned.
- netneutrality, on 05/17/2008, -3/+2I'd still like to see somebody port Firefox to DOS just for the heck of it.
- traherom, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3Well, it is over a decade old...
- Troy64, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8Why don't you load Windows 2000. Most computers can handle 98 can handle 2000, and it is a lot stabler.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6Nor should they. Windows 98 isn't supported by Microsoft anymore, which means it's not even approaching safe to use on the net...
- motionSymmetry, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1yeah, you're not alone. i've got OSX but it's 10.3.9 and i'd have to get new hardware to run even 10.4 effectively, so no FF3, and even if i wanted Ubuntu or some other linux the last i could install is the now-obsoleted 6.0 or thereabouts
fail
i wonder if the part-timers on mozilla work for Adobe for their day jobs?- possiblyneil, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2You could try Xubuntu. It is less resource intensive than Ubuntu but you don't loose any functionality, just a little eye-candy.
http://www.xubuntu.org/get
If they "part-timers" worked in adobe we would have a 64bit flash plugin for Linux already.

- mikeleeuk, on 05/17/2008, -1/+20The "Clear" button is back in the downloads dialog, and the main window finally dims when it's inactive on the Mac! It sounds so simple, but that's been driving me mad. Now they just need rounded context menus on Leopard and I'm 100% satisfied... :)
- prophetpimp, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7missed that one a lot in the previous beta's. Thank god Mozilla decide to put it back in.
- DeviateSeptum, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4There was quite a heated debate regarding the clear button. The Mozilla employees wanted it gone saying it wasn't needed anymore. Almost all the feedback from users and mozilla hackers wanted it there. It is obvious that it should be there... except to the people who should know best. It was actually quite annoying that the official coders had their heads up their ass on this issue and didn't want to listen to the users.
- comrade693, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2You act as if all the Mozilla employees wanted it gone, but that's clearly misrepresenting the facts. Folks should see the bug to actually understand what happened:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40049 ...- DeviateSeptum, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1You are correct. There were voices of reason whom I did an injustice.

- Rivers, on 05/17/2008, -3/+4Does anyone else have a blank column on the left of their iGoogle page in RC1?
- tehjarvis, on 05/17/2008, -2/+3mine is just fine.
- lordmetroid, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4So is mine. No problems for me under in the window version.
- ccaazz, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2nope, running ff3 rc1 in vista x64
- Smills, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I am running FF3 RC1 in Vista x64 and it works perfectly...
- nstanosheck, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah it did that to me on the latest beta too, but not every time. Which theme are you using? I am using the teahouse one.
- xxMarka, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I bet that column makes it even MORE bloated
- tragicmonkey, on 05/17/2008, -8/+1no add-ons yet, probably should wait a few weeks.
- PolarZoe, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2There are several ways to get add-ons working.
As said already you can use the Nightly Testers Tool to force enable them.
You can change a key in about:config to disable compatibilty checking
You can manually edit the install.rdf file to change the maximum browser version.

- robbiekhan, on 05/17/2008, -8/+40I've also noticed GMAIL loads much faster and there's a new window the tells of progress (even though it's brief) anyone else get this?
http://robbiekhan.co.uk/root/temp/firefix3_gmail.w ...
Pretty neat!- EmileVictor, on 05/17/2008, -9/+8Yep, never seen it before. I imagine it's a change made by Mozilla as opposed to Google?
- daveisfera, on 05/17/2008, -1/+26It started for me yesterday in FF3 beta 5, so it's definitely a Google change.
- AvidPreatorian, on 05/17/2008, -1/+4does it on FF2 and Safari so no, it is a Google update.
- dxgg, on 05/17/2008, -0/+15Yes, I saw the progress indicator yesterday on ffb5 But what's with the wmv?
- robbiekhan, on 05/17/2008, -3/+1Cool glad it's just not me then :P
The WMV was just for showing purposes, those not yet updated and those perhaps not getting the screen!- dxgg, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1Mmm...a screenshot would have sufficed. I don't know that many diggers would be interested in viewing an WMV. I don't even have the WMP installed (and won't).
- robbiekhan, on 05/17/2008, -3/+1Cool glad it's just not me then :P
- Cimlite, on 05/17/2008, -1/+76That's an update to Gmail, has absolutely nothing to do with Mozilla or Firefox.
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/05/need-for-spe ... - KeithA45, on 05/17/2008, -1/+18Naw as cool as that is, I got that yesterday still on Firefox 2. I think it's new to Gmail, not firefox
- Asphyxia8489, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7Yeah, happens on Safari too, it's a gmail feature
- lostjimmy, on 05/17/2008, -3/+15I can't believe people are suggesting that mozilla would add a special loading page for gmail. Seriously, people?
- noahsawyer, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2The load bar is from google as others said. However, after updating (from beta 5) the Mozilla updated successfully page stated that there was better performance for gmail and another address (though I don't recall what it was. I wish I'd saved the link.
- noahsawyer, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0/wha ...
- bordoisila, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0Well I thought it was one of those new features that Gmail keeps pulling out of its hat. Will have to check the progress bar in other browsers too. In any case this bar is great
- EmileVictor, on 05/17/2008, -9/+8Yep, never seen it before. I imagine it's a change made by Mozilla as opposed to Google?
- identityxcrysis, on 05/17/2008, -5/+7No worky with the greasemonkey. =/ I don't go anywhere without the greasemonkey. SO I guess I'll stick with Beta 5 for nao.
- HydrogenOxide, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/654 ...
Just don't try themes at risk of breaking the UI- identityxcrysis, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Oh sweet, I don't know why I didn't attempt that earlier. Thanks man :D
- prophetpimp, on 05/17/2008, -2/+3give it a day or too. Addons get updated fast.

- Zachari, on 05/17/2008, -9/+3Finally, I don't have to keep opening Opera to view Flash videos. FF3b5 had the nasty little problem with videos not working past :02.
- YoctoYotta, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5To be fair, that's an issue with your computer's flash plug-in installation, not Firefox or Flash.
- priegog, on 05/17/2008, -6/+38Ok, I'm gonna ask: any word on when Ubuntu will push this update?
- d4ni, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9Usually it takes only a few days for it to appear in the official repositories, so just have a little patience. Beta 5 isn't that bad, after all ;)

- ShootTheCore, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4I noticed it too.
- Mooney79, on 05/17/2008, -1/+6Firefox didn't tell me to update but when I went to Help-> Check For Updates, then It told me to update. The RC1 works rly fast!

- kenok, on 05/17/2008, -8/+5Ain't related to FF tho.
- OmegaWolf, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3Yeah, the new comments system is superior to the old one. It's even faster on my Firefox 2.0.0.14.
- DivisibleByZero, on 05/17/2008, -3/+6I wish my extensions still worked with it.
I've got the nightly tester tools installed to force compatibility, but if I go to the actual mozilla download page, it refuses to give me a download link for things that it thinks are incompatible.- Doktag, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5Here's the work-around I used:
Go to the page in another browser, and save the .xpi file to your computer, then just drag the xpi file into Firefox and it will install it.- 1337Kitty, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Another... browser? How does that work?
- marahm, on 05/18/2008, -0/+0No need to go to the page in another browser: just right click the extension you want while you're in Firefox, save it to your computer, then right-click it and choose Firefox from the "Open with" list - if Firefox is not on the "Open with" list, click "Browse", "Program Files", open the "Mozilla" folder, and click on Firefox.exe. Done.
To save a second comment, I'm going slightly OT to add that the speed of Digg comment pages is not related to the Beta. Much faster for me now too on Firefox 2.14.- d4ni, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1He means that Mozilla has grayed out the button "Add to Firefox" for extensions Mozilla believes are not compatible with the version of Firefox he is currently using. That way it is impossible to get the .xpi link (perhaps you can find it in the page source, don't know). Therefore, he has to use a different browser, so the button is replaced by a "Download Now" button.
Your method seems like a complicated version of simply left-clicking the "Add to Firefox" button to install it right away.

- skylarsutton, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1you can open the xpi file and change the version numbers to make it compatible also.
- d4ni, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1To add to the above: the .xpi file is in essence is a simple archive file (.zip). Simply rename the .xpi file to .zip, extract its contents and modify the 'install.rtf' file. Somewhere in this file you can find maxVersion. Simply set this to 3.*, create a new archive, name it whatever you want and give it the .xpi extension. Drag it into the Firefox window to install.
- DivisibleByZero, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2Figured out the better solution to my problem. From the downloads page, you can click on "all versions" link, which will make the latest one clickable.

- Atomic1fire, on 05/17/2008, -13/+4Looks like they added FUEL to the fire
/Someone had to say it.- enntee, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8I disagree. No one had to say it.
- Zalyster, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I would have, but it cost too much.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2FUEL Library
FUEL is about making it easier for extension developers to be productive, by minimizing some of the XPCOM formality and adding some "modern" JavaScript ideas.
that's the pun
- vincentb, on 05/17/2008, -10/+5The ugly keyhole default theme is still there. Looks awful on XP, I wonder what's it's going to be like on Vista.
I loved Firefox exactly because it didn't looked like the ugly IE7.- Blahages, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2There is a theme someone released for FF3 that makes it look pretty much like Version 2.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/655 ...
It hasn't been updated for compatibility with anything beyond Beta 5 yet, but if you want it, I've modified the file to allow it to install on anything up to the final FF3 release.
I can't guarantee it will work without issue, as I didn't make the theme, or anything. I just modified the MaxVersion line, and changed it from 3.0b5 to 3.0. Seemed to install fine for me.
Download it, and open up your Add-ons Theme Window, and drag the Jar file onto it, and install it.

Right click on main toolbar > Customize > Use small icons. - srg13, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1When I use Windows, I actually use the Winestripe theme that makes it look like Firefox 1 - I loved those icons...
But it looks great in Gnome - now it uses your icon theme for the icons, and your GTK theme for all the controls (including the ones in web pages, which is new to Firefox 3)

- baddmojoe, on 05/17/2008, -7/+6Beta 5 was so smooth for me - RC1 is crashing constantly, to the point of being unusable. Running on OS X 10.5.2.
