mozilla.com — The Mozilla.com website has been updated with download links, press release, and a post from Mozilla CEO Mitchell Baker about the official release of Firefox 2. Well done everyone.

      Yes, that is quite annoying. It's because Internet Explorer is so deeply integrated within Windows.

      The difference in hashes is only the installer. Icons/Text in the installer might have changed but that does not mean the browser has changed. Did you check the EXE?

      To change this:

      In the address box type about:config and press enter. Type "browser.tabs.closeButtons" in the Filter section. Change value as follows:

      * 1 - Close buttons on all tabs (default)
      * 2 - No close buttons at all (use middle click to close tabs)
      * 3 - Close button on the far right (old school)

      Anyhow, the EXE itself is such a small part of firefox. A lot of the browser outside the HTML rendering engine is implemented in XUL, which IIRC are external files. They could have made some bug fixes that don't involve changing the EXE that could still have an impact.

      At this point, I wouldn't assume anything; there's no harm in updating from RC3 to the final release.

      None of them work out of the box. The old extensions break, and some of them freeze the browser and force you to remove them manually.

      You're better off waiting until your preferred extensions are ported to the new browser before upgrading.

      Or you could just install IE 7 and be done with it.

We're planning on providing an "optional" update to Firefox 2 through this system, and that will likely happen in a few weeks. In the meantime, please do download through getfirefox.com. As long as you do not use a direct ftp.mozilla.org or releases.mozilla.org, we're pretty confident in our ability to handle demand, thanks to our volunteer mirror network.

      You're missing the point. Firefox is free open source software. Opera charged people for years until they couldn't get away with it anymore. Then when they realized they couldn't bleed money from their users any longer, they decide to make it "free", as in "shove advertisements up your ass if you wanna use our browser."

      Then they FINALLY made it free, but you *still* can't see the source. It doesn't matter how many nanoseconds Opera may or may not render pages faster than Firefox, I and many others support the large open source project that Firefox is a part of.

      for the Bookmarks backup folder? Hopefully they are still there for you.

Diggers have shot down countless stories because they were inaccurate. This one was inaccurate the time it was posted b/c it wasn't out at the time.

      another thing that should change is that there should be no left arrow when you are at the far left of the tab bar, and no right arrow at the far right.

      overall, besides the annoying changes to tab bar behavior, i love this update so far!

Releases are on releases.mozilla.org, but we prefer you use the download links from the site where we can do a better job at load balancing across and use a broader set of mirrors.

    Me, the casual web user who doesn't use any of that fancy shmancy RSS stuff, is not really impressed.

    1. Interface is shinier, but not necessarily better.
    2. Each tab has a little X on it. Not amazing.
    3. Spellcheck is awesome, though.

    Good release, probably has lots of little stability tweaks and stuff that I don't know about, but nothing too substantial.

The inline search results, the UI refinements, and RSS improvements are nice too. Other stuff under the hood may not be glitzy, but overall this is a great release.
