- falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -6/+128Personally, I really like the simplicity of Firefox's UI. Digg me down but I think even the new IE beta feels complicated.
- anagramarama, on 10/12/2007, -9/+125Quote from tfa: Firefox runs on more than one browser.
great! maybe I can get Firefox for my IE - 21.0, on 10/12/2007, -10/+46He wants Firefox to look like it's a native app for whichever operating system it's runnig on. So if it's on OS X it'll have cool aqua like buttons. XP and it will have crappy gray boxes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33You suck. I'm so ***** tired of my fellow Americans being dicks to Canadians just because . . . . um. . . . for no reason, actually. They're practically oure 52nd state. Grow the ***** up and stop joining in on the "canada bashing" just because every "trendy" comedian has made bank on pretending we hate Canadians for the last 30 years. They're some of the nicest, kindest, FRIENDLIEST people on the ***** planet and I for one am thankful to have them just to our north. I'd trade Canada for a handful of the ***** US states any day.
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29screw em, im gonna call it ff anyway
- cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23personally, i like canada. sure, the jokes are funny, but so are the jokes about the u.s. and just about any other country in the world. you know why i like canada? friendly people and relaxed marijuana laws. also, they aren't picking a fight with anyone they can in the middle east.
seriously.
@jk1150 - go play in traffic. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Awesome news. I don't mind the Windows interface, but looking at Firefox on Mac OS X is a bit painful when compared to Camino or Safari. Good to hear they're working on the theme across the board.
- cmorrell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Because if we used the great looking themes from the online community, we'd end up with this: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/72/previews/
Sometimes professional is just better. - jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16blisk is running RC1 of beta 2. Not the beta 2 release.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16They're running nightly builds.
- viper2843, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Here is the link to the Mozilla Wiki entry on the new design for Firefox 2.0. They have an image of a proposed design.
http://wiki.mozilla.org/FX2_Visual_Update/Default_Theme_Update - konspence, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22That's incorrect. The abbreviation is Fx.
"How do I spell Firefox? How do I abbreviate it?
Firefox is spelled F-i-r-e-f-o-x - only the first letter capitalized (i.e. not FireFox, not Foxfire, FoxFire or whatever else a number of folk seem to think it to be called.) The preferred abbreviation is "Fx" or "fx"."
Source: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/faq.html - pcheaven2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13They are not CREATING A NEW THEME, they are COMPLETELY REDESIGNING THE UI (User Interface) or in laymans terms the arrangment of the menu's, tools, etc.
They are attempting to create a universal UI that will look and work the same on Windows, Linux, Unix, Solaris, OS/2, BSD, OSX, etc. - blisk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14jam - the author kinda typo-ed that.. he definitely meant keeping the UI consistent across multiple platforms. not sure why he typed browsers instead of OS. it happens i guess.. either that or hasn't a clue what hes talking about.
- cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9firefox is simple, clean, fast, and less prone to attacks than IE. what's there not to like?
- graiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11My company is called Raizlabs (not Raiz Labs). Anyway, Radiant Core did do a good job. I have a post showing some of the UI explorations we did along the way people may find it interesting:
www.raizlabs.com/blog/. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+23Hm... I'm not even sure what the hell they meant to say there. Full quote:
"Unlike Microsoft, Goldman pointed out, Mozilla and designers like him have to worry about the fact that Firefox runs on more than one browser. This, in turn, creates a challenge when it comes to usability because what the browser looks like on one platform may differ greatly from what it looks like on another."
“There’s a desire for the software to appear to be native when it’s running on an operating system,” said Goldman. “There is also a desire that it’s recognizably Mozilla and not some other Web browser.”
I think they meant OS, but IE 5 runs natively on Mac. Not sure what the hell they're talking about there. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Or, it means that you have a preference? Also, "you're to stupid" is a really fun thing to read.
- mjpatey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The only problem with abbreviating it "Fx" is that WHO WOULD KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?
"FF", whether Mozilla likes it or not, makes a lot more sense, regardless of whatever rules may exist to the contrary. - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Hurray for a Canadian firm doing the redesign! Although, personally, I don't really have any problem with it now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/tailscloutier/screens/firefox.jpg - pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12could have sworn it was FF.... least thats what i've always seen and used.
- dan.grover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"You're" is a contraction, not a conjunction, I think. :)
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Seumas
Actually, I think most trendy comedians ARE Canadian. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9And... there goes the Radiant Core website. Gosh, those hosting companies must LOVE US! One thing is for sure, those datacenters are making a bundle from our traffic.
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Why are they spending money having a prettier default theme made when they have an online community of people making great-looking firefox themes for free? Spend the money working on new features! Or maybe fixing that memory leak everyone's talking about...
- graiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Let's try the link thing again... http://www.raizlabs.com/blog/
- mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@corsairstw: RC1 has been posted for over a week now. You can try out a portable version of RC1 if you don't want to wait until tomorrow:
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/08/21/download-firefox-2-beta-2-rc1-portable-version-available/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8How can you insult someone by calling them a dumbass, when you used the possessive "your" rather than the conjunction of "you are"?
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7according to above post, there's already an IE7-like theme for FF2. i doubt the reverse will be possible tho. :)
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Learn your Ennglish if YOU'RE going to post on digg."
HAHAHAHA! I love you! - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, I'm just gonna keep on using 708090-lite - the minimalist theme with the nonsensical name.
- eattoenails, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Link?
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you ask me, they might as well have just hired Marco Troost.
I seriously love this theme. http://www.pimpzilla.nl/ It looks so cool, but usability is A++ - psycloned, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8they should have gone with the http://iconfactory.com/
if they were good enough for microsoft, ubuntu, xbox, and roxio amongst others... they could have pulled the job.
P.S: i DON'T work there... but i have seen their stuff and it would have fitted great... let's see what these other cats can do... - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Thank god. Surely I'm not the only one that really didn't like the new Firefox 2.0 theme -- the buttons reminded me of Windows 3.1 buttons turned web 2.0 (the style AND the horrible 'old OS turquoise' color) and there was just something unpleasant about the home button.
But, I guess I can just download/make a Firefox 1.5 theme for Firefox 2.0 when it comes out. It's definitely nice to see a pro working on it, though. Google's Joga.com extension for the world cup -- a professionally made extension/theme -- was leagues more beautiful than any theme currently out for Firefox. - Estazor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The reason they don't take some amateur's work is because 9/10 it sucks or is just not professional. So they hire someone that has actual experience doing this for a living and can...you know get the job.
- Crackshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you'd like a more aqua like interface for firefox that blends nicely with OS X then install the grAPPLE theme, looks very nice.
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Seumas
51st state you mean. - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Should've done that long time ago.
The interface on Firefox for Mac's just embarrassing. - kerrle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IE fixes enough that it'll make my life as a web developer a little easier, but yes, true compliance isn't here yet.
I think the interface will be jarring for many users, especially with the XP version. The layout does work a little better on vista, but I fully expect to hear a fair amount of complaining when it gets pushed out on Windows Vista. - eattoenails, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@ahawks
Why don't YOU learn your "Ennglish" ..... - catbertz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you're not the only one.
I feel the same way, and I read a tech blog ranting about the dopey layout the other day.
MS, as a company, seems to have caught the "change everything, even if it works" bug. Same with the Office ribbon. - MaxD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lion's share in common usage and suitably large books means the largest part.
From Webster's New Univeral Unabridged: the largest part or share, especially a disproportionate portion: "The eldest son received the lion's share of the estate." [1780-90; probably after Aesop's fable in which the lion claimed all the spoils of a hunt]
...and another:
OED: the largest or pricipal portion
...and my usage guides:
Webster's: A clutch of commentators...complain that "lion's share" is frequently misused [based on the logic that] "as conceived by Aesop, [it] is all or almost all, not merely the majority or the larger part." [But] "lion's share" was entered in Webster 1864 with the definition "the larger part" and an explanatory note identifying Aesop's fable as the source of the phrase. [Also familiar with the Aesop fable] the 1890 editor [added] "all, or nearly all" in front of the 1864 definition... The trouble with [that] treatment was that [it] represented only Aesop [who] spoke no English, of course... The moral of this tale is that usage commentators and lexicographers have to look at English usage to understand how English speakers use a term, no matter what source it comes from. - kerrle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I quite like that. Very similar to what we have now, with just a bit of polish. One does wonder how it'll fare in Linux and on other platforms, though.
I would like to see Firefox better support GTK; there are some issues with the way it currently themes itself sometimes, especially with text color on menus with some themes. - patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm not sure how you guys feel, but I think the interface is a huge step back. All they really needed to do was use the native interface components when compiling (yeah, I know it would take some work, but it would be worth it) and it would have been fine.
The icons remind me of something from Win2000 or 98. They feel so.. fake. The colors seem to be to desaturated and I feel like someone accidentally was working with a 256 color palette.
The buttons next to the text boxes (ie: the go button, the search engine selector and the search button) seem like they ripped it off of IE (even though they aren't, it just reminds me of it).
I don't know, I prefer the current look to this, but we will see what happens. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The earlier versions of FF were excellent, but the current versions for about the past year, really suck..
When I open it, i have to wait about 30 seconds before it will let me type anything into the address bar.
WHEN will THAT be fixed? - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget to make a donation to the Mozilla Foundation to help support these efforts.
- LKBM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So...I'm guessing you people are unaware that Orwell wrote anything other than 1984 and possibly Animal Farm, yes?
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"IE7 is damn good."
..thats not what I hear.
last thing i remember hearing was how standards are once again thrown out of the window. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just wish the download box would dock inside firefox, or i could make it external or seprate when all windows are closed, i just wish it was "optional" maybe drag it to the side or bottom of the screen would be nice. other than that , it runs well! except those"IE only" web applications, even with user switching, doesnt always work well
