Heavens. This release is in such a bad state that 250% of the bugs need to be addressed before the final product is released. I can only wish the developers the best of luck... - itguru624, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42why cant they just ship it out full of security flaws and bugs? They need to get a clue from IE.......
(it is sarcasm) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41Will they finally fix that memory leak?
- mikechml, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30No :(
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30Hell no!!!
- Alphateam, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I'd rather wait a couple months for a solid product as opposed to having two months of craptasitc crashes until they get patches out.
- steger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22It'll probably release before IE7 anyways.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -8/+25by the time vista comes out, we'll be waiting for firefox 8 beta
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Note that if this was about an IE7 delay, the comments section would be 100 deep with trolls and firefox fanboys..
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22Ive got extensions out the ass installed, and my firefox crashes once a month. What are you doing that makes firefox crash so much?!
- timsco, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18< insert Windows Vista related delay smartass comment here >
- brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20i don't find that v. 1.5 is either buggy or a piece of *****. I don't see anyone holding a gun to your head. Use ie if you think it's better.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -4/+14don't know - i wonder if you could integrate it with your Oregon Trail II
- ooxoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Upcoming Schedule.
----------------------------------------------
Firefox 2.0 Beta 2 - August 23
Firefox 2.0 RC1 - September 19
Firefox 2.0 RC2 - October 2
Firefox 2.0 RC3 - October 11
Firefox 2.0 Final - October 24 - Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It is a priority for 2.0. In fact 2.0 really isn't all that different.. Mostly minor tweaks and integration of some things that people always install as an extension in the current version.
I do really like the built in spell check. - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@ Alphateam - Does anyone still run Windows 95 (11 years later)?
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14One would think that it would be a big priority to fix, and that it would be fixed already..
- djrtitan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13 @h00paj00
Well no, considering that they define the memory leak as a feature, not a problem:
http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/ben/archives/009749.html - MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11"memory leak as a feature"
A memory leak is a bug, and they will fix as many memory leaks as they can, however....
....what most people mean when they talk about 'memory leaks' is actually best called 'high memory usage'. There is a *huge* difference between these two terms. - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I bet the Ubuntu developers are pissed. :)
Firefox 2.0 Final, which is slated to be in Edgy, is now encroaching on their Release Candidate date. - TheBaker, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17@OutrightLie
I somehow doubt the developers were involved in the crop circle. - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Umm, use something else? I think life will go on till then.
- Avalonis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I see no problem with this. They acknowledge the existence of bugs in their software and are willing to put additional effort into fixing them. This luxury is something many commercial software developers just don't have.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I know there is a MS Browser / OS Release joke in there some where.
- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I always find it funny that people support delays for everything except Vista or other Microsoft related products.
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's not really that big of a deal - there's nothing stopping anyone who's actually anticipating it from downloading and using the beta right now. It's quite good and quite stable, and virtually any add-on works if you use the Nightly Tester Tools extension.
- emellaich, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@Devmode, said "When [IE7] is released you're not going to use it simply because it is made by Microsoft? Give it a try ... that's what it is all about. Competition from everyone potentially makes everyone produce better products."
That is not the reason I won't use IE7. I don't have problems with Microsoft in general. I use Windows, Office, and other programs and they work fine for me.
MS makes money on Windows and Office. MS needs to keep turning out new versions to generate new revenue. However, IE is free -- a new version means additional development cost, but it doesn't bring new revenue. Therefore, once MS dominates the web browser market they have no incentive to continue to innovate. This was shown by how long they let IE6 languish. I support Firefox for two reasons. 1) I like the browser, and 2) it provides competition to IE so that the feature set does not stagnate. - heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I've been running 2.0 Beta 1 since it was released and I'm very happy with it, I just have two issues (both of which will most likely be fixed in the final)
1.) I can't stand the new search in the top right (you have to click on the right side to drop down to the other engines) I like 1.5's where you just click the icon
2.) Crashes every time I use WordPress 2.0, I think it's more of an issue with TinyMce - scastile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Firefox for about a year and a half now and overall, I'm glad I switched. I don't miss IE at all. Firefox is way more stable even with the occasional headache of having to switch to IE to view a page. By the way, there is an extension that will open a link in IE for you if you right click... the name escapes me. Email me if you can't find it and I'll dig it up.
- Skeithy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I've been using nightly updates with no problems for 6 months, release those!
- surfit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7They should consider freezing new features and concentrating on bugs for a long time. I reported a rendering bug several months ago that affected all recent mozilla browsers that they seem to have ignored.
Something has to be done about memory too... if it's really the extensions that are doing it then they need some quality control and have a separate list for approved extensions, or simply write the system so it either kills extensions when they go wrong or make the interface less powerful. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6devmode, why not? Because i respect web developers work and i don't like to fix IE bugs all day.
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6"It'll probably release before IE7 anyways."
Given IE7 is due out with Vista, it's a certainty
I suspect Firefox 3 will be on the way by the time IE7 is out. - PKO17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with devmode. No browser is compatible with 100% of the websites out there; you're going to need a backup browser (or maybe just a test browser) at least once in a blue moon and considering how much of a pain in the ass it is to remove IE6 from your system; what would you rather have, IE6 or IE7 there? And it's just silly not to at least try something just because it's made by a company that makes money.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mozilla's gonna delay Firefox 2 and I'm gonna switch to Oprah.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6How long ago was IE6 released? I think people have a right to bitch if there are IE7 delays.
- jejones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You could play with your magic nose goblins!
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"Why does someone always have to bring up Ubuntu on a Windows thread!'
Er... why does someone always have to bring up IE on a Firefox thread! - Veritascitor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Hah, I would hardly call that Firefox's fault. Many MySpace pages have a horrible tendency to be overloaded with crappy plugins and javascript and pictures and music streams and god know what else (oh, and spyware) that they'll bring any browser to a screeching halt.
- cschees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People should applaud the Mozilla Developers for not releasing a crappy product, but waiting to fix the issues that remain. Firefox 1.5 is pretty rock solid and a hell of lot better that Microshaft IE. I would however like to see the a priority placed on fixing memory leaks in the browser. I'm cool with waiting a couple months to get the porblems and bugs fixes. In order to get more users to see the benefits of Firefox, it needs to continue to run fast, have good security and most importantly stable. So complaining isn't going to help the developers, take a better approach and submit bugs and help test issue to make the software better.
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I believe they changed the search drop-box back to the left side when the Visual Refresh.
Unfortunately that unveiled a new bug for me: I keep my search bar directly above my location bar, and it took the "Go" button with it! It's attached to the very left side of the search bar, not the right side of the location bar. The really annoying part is that I don't even normally keep the "Go" button on a toolbar anywhere, but you can't get rid of it without getting rid of the whole search bar. Oh well! - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I use firefox 2.0 beta with my old extensions using nightly tester tools and it seems quite stable already . I haven't installed the flash pluginor macromedia plugin which seems to be the root of the crashes and freezes.
so what if I need to play flash games I will play it with ie or opera. - alrahman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Me thinks it'll be worth the wait. At least they provide a planned release date (unlike other well known products)
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If you check the spelling with the google toolbar (forced into compatibility by nightly tester of course) in firefox 2 it's freezes.
- idioteque1025, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wouldn't it be great if 20% of myspace pages didn't break all bowsers, and 100% of myspace pages didn't slow any browser down to a screeching halt.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5i just dont care about the features that are suppose to be in 2.0.If nots faster and leaner then 1.5, why upgrade?
- RGCook, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'm not surprised. I beta tested and submitted numerous reports over about two weeks. After that, I just couldn't stand the crashing and started using 1.0.5.06 again.
I hope the next beta squashes some of the showstopper bugs. - lennon2600, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3All I got to say about this story is, so what? Firefox is great already. Waiting a little longer for the new release ain't leave me cryin'.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah it's pretty bad that Vista is several years late but that doesn't excuse Firefox! I would much prefer it if they posted honest and realistic deadlines. I'm sure this was just over enthusiastic estimation rather than a deliberate attempt to make headlines, but even so please get the dates right next time if possible.
I know... It's free software so I shouldn't really complain. :) - kwerboom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@hasbeen
The reason most people don't support Microsoft delays (like Vista) is that nothing really gets fixed over the longer period of time, there are still just as many bugs and security flaws, and the delays are usually caused by programmers in ivory towers who first try to build a utopian project then scrap all the code and start over when they realize its above their skill level. -
