- ftbl52, on 10/11/2007, -9/+233Thank God.
I can finally view things in Afrikaans. - kindrobot, on 10/11/2007, -8/+42"There is no such thing as retarded computers, just retarded people."
HP - schneiderj, on 10/11/2007, -11/+41I've been running Vista for months now .. never seen anything resembling jumping
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+34I just hope they've fixed the screen-jumping/jiggling thing when FF runs in vista sometimes.
I know you can stop it by turning off the bookmarks toolbar, but screw that! - schneiderj, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30"the UI is gay? mouse gestures which speed up surfing by like 100% is gay?"
There's a FF extension for that. - Ramzy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31Nah, your Firefox is just *****. Working just fine over here.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24Hm, let me see....
http://digg.com/microsoft/BREAKING_ANNOUNCEMENT_The_new_Microsoft_Surface?creplyto=6929595#creplyform
Nope, still sucks. Takes 110+ seconds to load 330k - are you kidding me? That's just ridiculous.
Now try this random 538k image: http://www.sunflower.com/~jmunro/space.jpg - Much bigger, loads 10x faster.
What's the difference, because it's all text? Big deal. The image is all pixels yet that still loads. How about rendering the page behind the scenes, THEN showing it instead of this 2 minute wait fest for small data?
Horrible. I remember once upon a time when FF used to be blistering fast. I really don't know what they changed. - BrassCandle2007, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Warning: This new version of FireFox is incompatible with the Sun Java Console SE 6 (version 1.6.0). When you restart FireFox it will warn you of this and disable the Java console. Java Console 1.6.0 is the current version. If you use the Java Console then do not install this version of FireFox.
- roinur, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Security fixes, memory issues, better Vista support and several new languages ??
Memory issues? There's nothing mentioned about it in the release notes. - ardnut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Broken in what way?
- openfly, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15You can always turn it off!
- taintedzodiac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13@ardnut:
He might mean the fact that it literally lags in comparison to other browsers on the platform (ie. Safari, Camino) and doesn't work with some sites' implementations altogether (see Pogo.com, for example).
I've used Firefox on both OSX and Windows, and the OSX version always slugs along when Flash is involved. Could be on the Flash developers' side of things, but I'm assuming this is the "bug." - undetected, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11And you thought Google keeping track of what you do is scary.
- Angoulemmy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I thought all the cool software was bi.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12No it's open source. Like a porn-star.
- diggcamr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I too had the same "jiggling" problem but the fix was actually quite easy: create at least one bookmark.
In short, if you have zero bookmarks in Firefox then the "jiggling" problem occurs in Vista. - rstarr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12And what fix might that be....?
- tektalk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Thank you veign for telling me about the AUTO-UPDATE yesterday.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I saw this in my RSS feed, clicked "Help" to go to "Check for Updates" and it said "Downloading Firefox 2.0.0.4".
Changelog:
*Added in 2.0.0.4 - Psychic Update Facility, begins updating before you click the Check for Updates button. - pile0nades, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Full changelog:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=545322 - nrgamble, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9is a x.0.0.4 version release that is automatically brought to your attention by firefox really worth 1200+ diggs?
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10It's still a memory hog.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Don't be fooled. Firefox is SLOW as hell . I wasn't even aware of this until I tried ie7 for the first time yesterday. It sux to say it but ie absolutely smokes ff when surfing digg. Only thing that I miss about ff is the bookmarks manager and the inline spell check.
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, because if we left software as-is without updating it, we'd experience pure, bug-ridden, feature-less bliss.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10I'm talking about loading the digg story with 1000+ comments in it (~330k) compared to a 530k image, not the actual "MS Surface" demo site.
It's an issue that *everyone* has because Firefox' method of rendering pages is screwy.
Guarantee you anyone who clicks that above link, no matter how fast your machine or connection is, will have a problem loading all that text in FF compared to IE. Not saying IE is great, but... hey, FF is the IE killer and it can't even load tons of data properly.
Not trolling, just pointing it out. - electioneering, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6apples and oranges?
- Dudshot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6i meant this bug: http://www.jasongriffey.net/wp/2007/04/03/firefoxosxflash-problem/
- krunchyfrog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I use Links!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10For a comparison, try it in IE 6.
Shockingly, it loads faster - around 10 seconds. - FyberOptic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Firefox: Barebones browser, allows extensions, open-source (although controlled by mozilla, so this means little)
Opera: Countless integrated features (RSS, email, etc, which don't bloat it down), proven fastest, proven safest, close-sourced (like it matters)
So yeah, I'm obviously biased, but it's not like any of it's untrue. - grav3k33p3r, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Will there be a digg, again, if Fx 2.0.0.5 gets released? Its just freakin' updates so what the big deal?!!! I DONT CARE!
- Maagic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I'll stick with Netscape. It came with my internets.
- kheldorin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6It worked for mine. After I restarted, it triggered the UAC dialogs. Clicked OK and the warning for Java incompatibility appears. Then Firefox 2.0.4 appeared. Still prefer IE7 for speed, protected mode, and lower memory footprint.
- jazh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Strange... I've crashed twice already. Lets hope its the extensions!
- bowe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hmm, I must be the only one having problems with the update on Vista. The install fails because it doesn't have enough permissions to write a file somewhere. I tried running it as administrator and I got the same problem. Then I downloaded the installer and tried it as administrator and it told me what file it was having problems with. I'm not even sure if it's worth updating...
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@pile0nades (#6957755)
Normally i'd have dugg you up, but this time no. He is right.
I seriously dont care if security update 10.0.3.2.1.00.1.2.09.1 is released tomorrow!
If im using firefox, I will be notified. - bloaty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4buried for mentioning that horrible abomination called vista.
- cclasby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3...and it crashes every time I open a new tab or use a Java based App! Hooray!
- Shriker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yes...?
- Anorexicpeanut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3WOOT, it fixed the fact that my firefox had stopped bookmarking things, well done firefox team!!!!
- VeganG, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I don't see what you're trying to imply. Nothing on the internet is 100% safe from abuse. You don't stay the "safest" by ignoring issues, you do so by fixing them.
- svivian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Uh, Firefox isn't, and never has been the "safest" browser. Take off those rose-tinted glasses...
Why on earth is this news anyway? I know FF is popular, but this is the most minor change possible in a piece of software... - Silthrim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The only thing I got out of this update was that it broke Firefox and I had to reinstall like 3 times and fix some permissions before it would work... dunno why but it was annoying... i only wanted to look at pr0n.. but noooo
- yugiohdan6, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4it's called windows automatic updates
- aantix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Can they do anything that can prevent the app from beach-balling every five minutes in OSX? It's my only app that I consistently have to Force Quit at least two to three times a day.
- laserdog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You seem to be confusing "marketing" with "word of mouth".
4 years ago I had to introduce a group of several dozen people who used nothing but IE all day to firefox. I was terrified that they would be annoyed at the change to their status quo.
I took 2-3 minutes with each, explaining the new features (ad blocking, tabbed browsing, auto pop up blocking). And at the end each was nodding, and completely accepting of the new tool. Not a single one complained, which although it doesn't sound like much, came as an amazing surprise, even to a fanboy like me.
And then there is the whole issue of IE's history as a vector for spyware. I used to spend hours cleaning up my parent's computer each time I visited home. Only to find it completely reinfected when I returned. After the third time this happened, I imported their bookmarks to firefox, deleted the icon to IE, and replaced it with one that launched firefox. I never had to clean spyware off of their computer again (yes they still used it). Again, not marketing, but an actual tangible benefit to switching. - funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3where can i get a previous release of Firefox?
- cosequin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3That's digg's problem. The earlier digg js/css never was so slow.
- TSSaloic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If it is after version 8.0 it is just a re branded Firefox.
- giloron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@lexbaby
I would call that working as intended. As a user, you shouldn't be able to update software installed on the system. The updater should bring up the UAC prompt and give itself administrator rights. Maybe this will be part of the more Vista updates to come. -
