- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Jesus, don't post this kind of thing. Anyone who is interested in an alpha product already knows how to get it. This is not something for general consumption.
- boilerup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Firefox Fans:
Yes Firefox is indeed a great browser. I am sure that the majority of users on Digg are technologically savvy enough to utilize Firefox (thank goodness). But can we please use some constraint when posting stories like this. It is a nightly alpha release after all and is most likely not ready for prime-time. Like a previous poster indicated; most, if not all Digg users are aware of the daily builds and will update if they so desire. I am as big a fan of Firefox as the next Digg user but if stories like this make the front page, then maybe every program that is released in an alpha/beta build should be Dugg.
-Just Something to Think About - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9it's in alpha. (lower than beta)
- reflous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8actually, it is even worse than alpha... these releases are nightly releases, not even worthy of an alpha designation. In other words, these files are just a collection of what the mozilla programmers have come up with without all the debugging that goes into an official alpha release
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9lol 3 firefox alpha stories in the same half a day!
- isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7see when stories about alpha releases make it to the front page, unexperienced internet users may see the post and scurry on over to download the latest thinking that all the cool "geeks" do it. like a few other commentors mentioned, keep the alpha announcements off the front. that should minimize the number of "my extensions don't work asdjadsas" or "how come this keeps crashing?" requests that proliferate throughout the net.
- Surrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think in 2.0 they are supposed to have new memory reduction techniques so hopefully all those people complaining about its memory usage will find this release to their liking.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice. It installs as BonEcho and leaves my existing fx stable in place :)
No visible feature changes that I can see :S - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53 out of the top 5 frontpage stories are about FF2.0a
If none of my extensions work im sticking with 1.5 - natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Camino is so fast because it is built on the native Mac UI API. Firefox is so extensible because it runs through an interpreted language called XUL (on the xulrunner program). So it's either speed, or extensibility - you can't have both.
- DenZ88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nightly builds don't look too safe... even if it does fix the memory leaks i'm going to wait for a more stable beta
- Dennis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah.... too bad none of my extensions work
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2a lot of my live bookmarks (RSS feeds) are gone. What the hell?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All my extensions work. Here's a screenshot:
http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/7326/extensions0tm.jpg - truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2when is FF2 scheduled to be released?
- Sonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ma-by because i don't have any extension now, but in this pre-release Firefox 2.0a1 (code name Bon Echo) only uses 47Mb of memory...
It installs in "C:Program FilesBon Echo" but i thought i could use my old settings in "C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox" doesn't work. Think one need to uninstall "Bon Echo" to use version 1.5 again. - deaderthanyou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Do not download this. Nightly builds have been known to break lots of things. All this is going to do is make lots of people mad thinking that firefox is bugridden. This can't even be considered alpha!
- angrybulldog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3install "tab mix plus" xpi and you can get ridda the "x" on the tab altogether or have it appear only on one tab at a time or whatever you like ... pretty flexible, easy to use.
so far 2.0 alpha's working great for me ... nice! - Cybermagellan1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Um, difference between Firefox 1.5 and 2.0?
At least Microsoft changed the GUI, same ole same ole. - ice2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IE is gonna get owned!
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone here got green thumbs up (except one random red) You are now retawded!
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3is it just me or are those "screen shots" totally useless. I mean its great that a new version is coming - but come on - there is nothing truely that can be gained from viewing these screenshots.
It reminds me of the Vista Screens that were out some time ago - the guy had cropped most of the image away and alos showed screens of it installing or something - but the screens were totally pointless. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Like others have said - it's alpha.
That would be what the "alpha" in the title stood for. - flammon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox 3.0 is the exciting release for me because it will use the new Cairo canvas which will be accelerated by the GPU (on my platform anyways). The page rendering will look fantastic and fast without a hardware upgrade, sweet!
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's an option to move the X back where it came from.
- wordsnatcher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Firefox 2.0 is an improvement, but if they really want to compete with IE 7 they're going to have to start matching their amazing new features, like moving the menu bar below the buttons and making things shiny.
- aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I need to create an extension just to avoid the Firefox stories on the front page.
- natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, Cairo is enabled on both the trunk AND the branch for BonOcho.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What they must do to compete is naively view RSS feeds. Not only bookmarks. It works with atom but most versions of RSS (1.0 and higher) still show as XML unformated.
- sproutworks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If your extensions aren't working, install the Nightly Tester Tools extension. It will let you force any extension to be compatible. I always do this when using alpha builds, and I have had no extension problems so far.
http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/firefox/buildid/nightly.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No Digg, Firefox has had nightlies day in day out since its inception. The alpha is also nothing particularly special, that's why it's called alpha.
- Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nightly builds of Firefox have been available for years, and Mozilla (which the firefox code is based on) for many years before that, in total probably going back 7-8 years or so. How is this news?
- TheClone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Odd, you don't appear to have an X on each tab like I do. Is it because of the theme you're using?
Edit: Crap. I meant to reply to the person above you. - Sonej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Didn't get any of my extension working with Nightly Tester Tools on Firefox 2.0a1
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No great difference to 1.5 except that the Live Bookmarking is WORSE! I sometimes want to put my feeds somewhere OTHER than my toolbar mozilla!
- SurlyDuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you wanna be REALLY cutting edge then they already have builds that are headed toward 3.0 (still labeled as Deer Park). You can also find the changes in each daily build of Trunk or Branch (heading toward 2.0) here (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=23). Trunk builds are available here (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/) and Cairo is already implemented. They are far buggier, but they also have the new bookmarking system implemented called Places.

http://www.htk.com.br/ - bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Can't wait for them to get thier ***** together. Hate seeing my memory usage shooting up to 150,000 for FF.
- aThing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4What's new?
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3wtf on mac, in the menubar, it shows up as bon echo =x
- michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7No, it's an alpha.
EDIT: Sorry about the dupe, same time post. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I think consumers really want cosmetic changes. or maybe thats just what I want.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I REALLY don't like the "X" on the tabs. This was one reason why I didn't like Opera.
It's so easy to create and close tabs using the middle-click on the mouse........Why does Firefox 2.0 force you to use the first mouse button to close tabs? They must be on drugs!
Oh well, Firefox is still the best out of the other 2 top browsers.......it'll still be my browser of choice regardless for security and features - billdcat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3What's the difference between this and "Deer Creek"? Or are they the same?
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Bon Echo? That's so ugly. I hate how my extentions don't work.
- jzillan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2thank you...but i'll stick with Camino. its faster than the speed of light!!! no but seriously....i really wish mozilla would offer up extension compatibility w/ the Camino browser.
in case you were wondering...Camino 1.0 is a universal binary for powerpc and intel based macs - an0nym0us, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Come on people, search all the alpha build of every known program out there and digg it!
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -25/+9enough of the FF stories... we KNOW where to find the builds, the info, the blogs, the forums ALL about mozilla.
yaaaawn. - greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1is this still a beta? cuz if it is i don't want to run into any bugs and resort to downgrading back to 1.5.
