- TheIconoclast31, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24It's good, but is it good enough to replace my Web Developer's Toolbar?
- cruppel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@TheIconoclast31
it doesn't replace the developer toolbar so much as compliment it very well. I use both and find them equally useful at their respective tasks, with little feature collision. While the developer toolbar has very rich functionality for revealing useful design information regarding the HTML, CSS, and other media on a web page, Firebug excels at debugging javascript, monitoring the DOM real time, and monitoring server requests that are not so apparent from the page itself, such as Ajax calls. It is geared much more toward the DOM and scripting than the web developer toolbar. - ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It does... There's a lite version for IE and other browsers.
- rexxars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Firebug is absolutely excellent. I use it every day for debugging HTML and CSS layouts, but it really shines in Javascript development.
I love being able to do console.log(somevar) to track progress.
I love being able to run javascript code directly from the console.
I love being able to see Ajax requests.. both the outgoing post/get (spot errors easily), and the response.
I love being able to set breakpoints in my code.
And I love being able to easily inspect objects on a page, viewing the HTML for that object easily, and seeing the CSS classes that apply to it.
I general, I just love this extension. Couldn't live without it anymore. - digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Hey Web Developer Toolbar, you're looking sexy tonight."
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5they are both different extensions that accomplish alot of different tasks and compliment each other wonderfully, i use both on a regular basis
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is damned handy. it even shows the dom/html generated via javascript. sweeet.
- JPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very handy when coding. Love it.
Funfact: If you are viewing the html tab, and use click your scroll wheel, you can actually see the html of the autoscroll image appear. - sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6is it so hard to install and try it yourself? seriously, it'd be faster than asking for, finding and reading a review....
okay.. after using this for the last 90 seconds, i can tell you i'll use this much more than the web developer extension. - ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Firefox 2.0 here. Crashed both times I tried to enable it. Hit F-12 and then went down to Enable Firebug.
When I clicked Enable Firebug for this Web page I atleast got to see a quick bit of what it looks like.
Takes up half of the screen and crashes though. - Anthet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use firebug every day at work and have been for a while now, couldnt hack javascript/ajax without it. Great job everyone for making such a wonderful product.
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anyone who has to ask if this replaces their "web developer" bar obviously has never tried it. Firebug is the ultimate web developer's tool. The webDev toolbar pales in comparison. Debugging, live inspecting, Dom manipulation, network statistics, lord jesus!
- toolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3just a note.... DOM Inspector was originally written by Joe Hewitt, Firebug's main developer
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Mejodig
I'm with you...I've been using that extension forever. I guess we'll just have to try it and see. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Can anyone who has used both give a brief comparison between firebug and the web developer extension - http://chrispederick.com/work/webdeveloper/ ? I'm very happy with it at the moment, but may install firebug as well if it has any additional compelling features.
- TheIconoclast31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The CSS editor is very fluent, and it lets you disable individual properties very easily, and see the changes realtime (without the 1-2 second delay that WebDevToolbar has.)
- dtjm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Best features of FireBug
-- changing CSS styles on the fly (but only if they are in "style" attributes)
-- Javascript console...run javascript commands by hand
-- Javascript debugger...find out exactly where your code is breaking
Some credit to Microsoft, they did release a Web Developer toolbar to use with IE 7
Also, I agree that the Web Developer Toolbar FF extension goes well with FireBug - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@sxtxixtxcxh
I'm at work now, and would rather hear the opinion of a few diggers than wait 8 hours before having a look. - sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6right.. i don't see it in firefox 2. secondly, it's not done as well as this dude. have you even tried it?
- nrgamble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6mooseknuckle...what are you doing developing in IE?
- Dakusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I LOVE this plugin so much!!! It really works great and makes life SO much easier.
On a completely separate note... I was never able to get the "extension developer's extension" to work on FF 2.0... it got hung on install every time. Anyone know why or if there's a fix for that... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2DOM Inspector is Firebug minus usefulness, minus cool features that don't exist in DOM Inspector at all.
Firebug is the new DOM Inspector.
DOM Inspector is only included in Firefox if you choose the advanced installation :) - qbitus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Firebug is by far one of the best web development tools.
Please donate to Joe Hewitt who spent ages working on it. Even better, if you can, get your company to contribute with a donation.
You can read about the how and why there:

http://www.joehewitt.com/blog/introducing_fir.php - ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not perfect but it's a fantastic tool. I use it to give me live feedback and debugging of my SVG, so I can see exactly how my JavaScript is messing with the DOM - AND it tells me if the Java script has errors. It's saved me days already, after only 4 weeks of use. This joins (but doesn't replace) Chris Pederick's Web Developer Toolbar as a must-have.
- rickjames47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its amazing for Javascript/AJAX Debugging ... that is its main appeal.
If you don't do a lot of JavaScript then it can also help you with CSS debugging (though I barely ever use it for this).
Simply put if you don't code in JavaScript this is a MUST, if you don't but do CSS this is a "Maybe". - WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMG. This is the best thing since sliced bread and canned beer combined. It's like a web developer's wet dream.
- the_penguin_boy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Wow, this looks really useful. I'm really interested in web development, but don't have all that much experience. Most of the other web dev extensions I've seen have just been overwhelming, but the UI on this one looks like I'll be able to use it and learn.
- BillyG123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I noticed it right away, and no mention of Parakey after all this time...
- deansfurniture5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually--it'll change the CSS anywhere, even a linked page.
This is some really cool stuff! - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THANK GOD! I've been using 0.2.3 since it was the last version to work with remote XUL applications (specifically, the XHR spy feature would stop XHR's from working), however this one seems to be working properly.
- cjmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't really get what Firebug was all about until I saw a screencast showing what it can do. I was (and still am) a big user of the web developer toolbar, but now I just have to give this some use too... It just looks amazing.
I dugg the screencast so that others can get an idea of what exactly firebug enables them to do... link to digg page:
http://digg.com/programming/Screencast_Firebug_1_0_The_ultimate_web_developer_tool_This_is_Amazing - pkkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This has much better CSS Support than WebDev Toolbar. Thats enough to make me happy. :)
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works great on XP and FF 2.0 for me. This is no doubt one of the best FF extensions out there!!
- shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great, dugg for the css editor alone! (not to mention all the other good features). It will not replace Web Developer tool bar in my opinion, but it will definitely compliment it.
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The network analyzer doesnt seem to decode gzip.
Betas.
Add that to the todo list. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally. My NetObjects Fusion will work better than ever!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are both completely different products.
Web Developer does quite different things. I think it's more for webdesigners, which want to see their page without images, and stuff.
Firebug lets you debug JavaScript-code, replaces the DOM Inspector and does a lot of cool things that are useful to developers.
I use them both, though. There's not much they are doing both. - r3zim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. Props to the firebug developers. This is a great tool.
- rayishu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this is great for if u get code from some else and are expected to make it work
- illicium, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5..Yeah, Firefox comes PRE-LOADED with DOM Inspector, which does the same thing.
- cwiz7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I could've sworn I read "Firefox 1.0 Beta is out!" out of the corner of my eye and I was about to say, dude, get with the program! Now, off to buy glasses.
- bogoslav, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0Firebug is still my favorite and most used plugin for Firefox. Just can't imagine my life without it.
- dioxmat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There is a nice image on getfirebug.com illustrating the new profiler feature: http://getfirebug.com/net.gif
Can you say bloat ? :) - kasa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0best.webdeveloper.extension.ever
- adambair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you like this tool -- how could you not -- please consider donating. The more people that donate, the better the product will become.
- chucali, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! YES!
- chanceman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Digg-It! This will come in very handy!
- sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2This is awesome. Very nice.
Stuff like this is why I still bother reading digg even with all the stupid political crap and inaccurate headlines. - holzp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2@ RG13
Oprah? Not that bloatware! - sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3@mejogid: ah... so.. no firefox... where do you work? microsoft?
