- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19WindowsXP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE which allows you to easily create icons to shutdown or restart your computer.
To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:
1. Right click on an open area of the desktop
2. Select New / Shortcut
3. Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - no quotes
4. Press the Next button
5. For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.
For a reboot, enter "shutdown -r -t 00"
Shutdown [{-l|-s|-r|-a}] [-f] [-m [\ComputerName]] [-t xx] [-c "message"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]
Parameters
* -l - Logs off the current user, this is also the defualt. -m ComputerName takes precedence.
* -s - Shuts down the local computer.
* -r - Reboots after shutdown.
* -a - Aborts shutdown. Ignores other parameters, except -l and ComputerName. You can only use -a during the time-out period.
* -f - Forces running applications to close.
* -m [\ComputerName] - Specifies the computer that you want to shut down.
* -t xx - Sets the timer for system shutdown in xx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
* -c "message" - Specifies a message to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127 characters. You must enclose the message in quotation marks.
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#shutdown - necromancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Great, so now I can accidently shut down my computer when I click the wrong icon...
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Woohoo! I can't wait until they release their other projects: "Delete this directory with one click!" and "Format your hard drive with one click!" I think they are working on a program called "Send that email to your boss that you typed up when you were drunk!", but that will take a few months to finish. This is going to be a real time saver for someone like me who never clicks or types the worng thing.
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Windows -> U -> U
That was enough for me *shrugs*
Although now I don't bother shutting down, hibernation is better for me needs.
That and I now use an iBook. - archerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just press the power button? thats 1 "click"
i mean the power button option has been around for a while, it automaticly shuts down windows and everything... - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would I want to turn my friend off>??
- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish there was a way instead of having to go thru the shutdown cycle, I could just somehow (safely) push the power button and turn the system off.
- Semitallsmalls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so, does anyone have anything negitive to say about my digg?
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When you own a Mac, you still have to worry about shutdowns, in the sense that when one occurs will it turn on again?
Atleast that's what we have to deal with at our school, 2 macs of 10 were fried simply by the power being cut (no surge). - admdrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First, I love the "im so l33t i never shutddown my comptuer!!1" comments. Heaven forbid one needs to install a piece of hardware that requires shutting down.
Second, as many comments have stated, there are built-in commands that can be used for shutting down (shutdown.exe) or locking the workstation (c:windowssystem32rundll32.exe
user32.dll,LockWorkStation). The ability to force close some apps is basically all this Brutus thing does special, and if you need to force kill *anything* that bad, you should be looking at why you're even running it, or if there's something going wrong with that particular program.
Third, the people who just pull a plug out of the wall (especially to the guy who said he does because he doesn't care about his Windows install): you got to be freaking aware of how damaging that can potentially be to a lot of hardware in your computer, right? Harddrives are susceptable to data loss or physical damage if the computer is suddenly powered down, especially if a write or read is in progress. A powering on/off cycle is the most damaging thing to ANY electronic. I fear for the short life of any power supply of a computer that is powered on and off daily. - Semitallsmalls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait, enough with the praise already! someone out there must have something negitive to say about my digg. Lets all be fair and give them a chance to voice.
- circuitbug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I put my root in the recycle bin that way all my files are in one convenient place.
zero click. - gypsyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hit the Reset button, insert knoppix CD, enjoy
Try and use peripherals, connect to internet - gnash teeth, remove knoppix CD. - blueorder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make a shortcut with:
"%windir%system32rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation"
and click that to lock your computer with one click (if you put the icon in the quicklaunch). - Sleestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's always bothered me in XP that when I click on Start|Shut Down , it doesn't! WTF! Instead after basically telling the OS that you want to shut it down, it then asks you if want to shut down, restart, stand by or log off. That design makes no sense. Apple gets it right. You click on the apple menu and can choose to shut down or log off or go to sleep. As an added bonus, after making your selection, by default you get two minutes to change your mind before the shut down initiates. If you're sure, you hit return and the process initiates immediately.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahh man, another program to do all this...
- gbaderek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That wont be good for me. I know I will hit the power button by accident.
- 42kami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Finally! The ability to shutdown Windows the way you always wanted to."
You mean with a hammer? - multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, it isn't that hard to shut windows down, although I have noticed that sometimes my laptop decides not shut down completely so I have to either press the power button a few times or doing what I hate to do and unplug it. Luckily isn't hasn't happened when I'm on battery.
To the people talking about wasting electricity:
I thought that the monitor uses the most power so I just turn it off most of the time. If that isn't true I'll start turning my laptop off more often. - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, this is lame. people are gonna d/l a prog just to shut off their comp with a click? how lazy can you get?
- edifyquest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lmao.....Nice, dncnyoy
Hey, I know, how about setting power management options so your computer automatically hibernates after a period of inactivity? this way, no icon to click, no button to push, no program to install and no hammer to lift(42kami)
yeahhh.........oh, did somebody else already mention this? I didn't read all of the comments. - Semitallsmalls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I was wondering, besides this program what else can I do to shut down windows? Someone here hopefully knows.
- JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01001 dig...w00t!
- LtData, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, I've known about this for about a year and a half now. Its built-in to XP.
And there is always the power button, people. - rockdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shutdown: When I'm going away for a day or more. I downloaded this tool, but I rarely use it.
Restart: If you say you don't reboot your computer, you're saying you have outdated software, because most installs require a reboot to work properly.
Hibernate: Quite frequently; when I go to sleep and whenever my laptop isn't plugged in and I'm not using it at that moment.
Sleep: When I go downstairs to eat a meal or when I go for a quick walk or something.
I'm personally against people who have never seen their computer screen blank, or whose hands have been burnt because their computer has been on for so long that it overheats. - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is a great app. I like the ability to remove junk from the start menu too. I now have a 3 option start menu...Run, Settings, and Programs."
can't you do this normally?
you can in windows xp at least - zefer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0always used to have a quicklaunch shortcut to shutdown but I soon got sick of accidently clicking it!
- MazeBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like many have posted, u can hit your power button to shut down, hibernate, standby-- these options can be found in many windows based computers under a power options( i am not shore on how many, and an only speaking of XP)
no digg - Sumyunguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just hit the windows key, hit the U key, and hit enter. Fast, efficient, fun!
- kuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No clicks. ALT-F4 > Enter
- SGT.SHIZZO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And a great angelic hymn resounded as Beavis unleashed the mighty Brutalis upon his wretched desktop enemy."
- TheRipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Completely useless.
- rbochan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just what the average Windows user needs: yet more icons magically appearing in the taskbar that they have no clue wtf they do...
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Using "Finally!" seems to be overdoing it, but interesting to people who didn't know about this old trick.
- massa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Finally! The ability to shutdown Windows the way you always wanted to" ... forever and in all Windows machines of the world??!! w000t!!
- blkjak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This app rocks!!! I can't wait to put it in my Quick Launch next to AOL, Gator and Weatherbug....I am going to be sooooo efficient!
Uh..no digg. - johnpombrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Shutdown no, restart yes.
The other thing this app MAY do is immediately kill running apps. There is a built in 3-4 second timer in the registry that I hacked that will do this but it is messy. IF this app does this, worth the price of a download. You can always remove it!
PS Hacking Windows XP book goes over this very well! - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I never shut down my laptop, but rather put it in either standby or hibernation mode. I just shut the screen for hibernation and press the power button for standby and hold the powerbutton for a forced shutdown"
Same here, I haven't shut my laptop down in months, it hibernates and wakes up in seconds rather than having to wait for bootup.
On the desktop machine, pushing the power button shuts it down properly anyway. This seems to be an answer to a question nobody asked - pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is far from new on any windows pc.
- Iam8up, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because we all know shutdown -s -t 0 in a batch file is soo hard =(
- Postoasted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In XP Pro go to Monitor Properties - Screen Saver - Power - Advanced - When I Press the Power Button, select shut down. One button and presto XP pro shuts down.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There has always been the ability to make your own one click shutdown or restart icon. This just makes it easier.
Of course, why would you want to shut down a Mac? They don't want you to shut them down. You aren't really running a Mac, rather you are just sharing an experience with the computer. You have to beg and plead to get it to do something that it may not want to do, and even they it may tell you to shove off. HAL was an Apple product, I'm sure. - theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've done repair work at several homes where they just use the little red switch on the surge strip..."it takes care of everything"
- lennox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@cosmotic, cosign.
- FiveIron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is really lame people, you've been able to make these icons by yourself forever, and if your hardware supports it, you just hit the big power button on your pc and it runs the shut down process, heck I can hit a key on my keyboard and it hibernates, 1 click
LAME - TailGater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shutdown the computer? What for? Jee!
no digg - slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay, I finally know what to do next April fool. Make shutdown.exe using "My Computer" Icon
lol - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Shut down? What's that? Buy yourself a Mac and you'll never worry about this stuff again"
Another Mac myth, just like Windows lovers saying you never have to reboot. It's all BS. Every time I go to my client's house and run the Apple update tool, there's a reboot coming, same goes for my windows clients. - slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all the spyware and virus writter, here is a idea for your next big thing!!
write a random icon with same name from desktop.
So stupid people, who download your email attachment. Will say "WTF with the computer today?"
lol - cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"fortunately, it's quite difficult to accidentally type "shutdown -h now""
but it's easier to accidentally type 'halt' -
