- navitatl, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17Cool stuff, but nothing a veteran last.fm user wouldn't already know. It's really good to talk to people on there, and get personalized human recommendations. Make friends!
http://www.last.fm/user/navitatl - Add me if you want - TheG2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Pandora and Last.FM do completely different things.
- mozzep, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13this is not relevant to the article, but I had to quit using last.fm because it's results do not exemplify my taste in music. It records the tracks I play, not the amount of time I spend playing an artist. Therefore, artists I've spent less time listening to, but have shorter tracks, appear at the top of the list, while artists that have longer tracks like king crimson, pink floyd, or the grateful dead, do not appear at the top, even though I've spent much more time listening to them.
- quiksliver, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7ill bite...
http://www.last.fm/user/quiksliver/ - philsharp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I wouldn't say they do completely different things, but I would think more people use Last.FM for the scrobbling application, not music recommendation.
- DWTebriel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8What Sony ad? (gotta love ad-block)
- wiifm69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Best thing I got working recently was srobbling from your iPod. Join the disccussion group http://www.last.fm/group/iSproggler to download the software
Oh and btw add me http://www.last.fm/user/wiifm69/ - theplop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5i would but... my compatibility rating would be in the neighborhood of zero.
Out of your top 50 artists, i have heard of 0 of them.

- acex23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5yeah frick. see you guys there.
http://www.last.fm/user/glitterncaca - navitatl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah there's a whole group on last.fm dedicated to changing that.
I usually don't even get my recommendations that way, I just look at "similar artists" on the left-hand side.
And if you think those guys have long songs, check out Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso UFO. They should be #1 on my list but their songs are friggin 4 hours each. - BevansDesign, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think "Last.fm Charts" is a better Facebook app than the one Last.fm made. It doesn't play the music on-screen, but I don't want that feature anyway.
- diggzoid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Weird not to mention subscribing to Last.fm - for only $3/Mo you get no adds and get to see who visits your profile. Plus you support an excellent free service.
www.last.fm/user/dubhead - TheG2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Burn!!
But seriously, I use LastFM all the time for finding new music, when you combine it with Pandora, you're musical life is set. Not having a life in general on the other hand... - JoshStix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4*whores own account*

http://www.last.fm/user/KFLester/ - mojaam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Having a personalized radio right on your facebook profile is pretty cool to me, comes in handy when you on a remote computer and looking to listen to something you know you will like. For all the data it's best to get the full thing at the person's page.
- vickei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They missed the most useful thing, at least for me. When I find an artist I usually go through similar artists or group artists. This does not work for popular artists and ones tipped by Pitchfork though. It also takes a while but I have found so many that way. As for the radio, I never listen to it and when I do I log into another account and listen to my own radio ;) (its a pay feature).
- beelz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2god would you stop spamming that
- themono, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's a couple of greasemonkey scripts available that add some cool stuff to last.fm - like calculating average tracks per day/week/etc, or what percentage of your total listening each band represents, and just adds these seamlessly to your viewing of any last.fm page. Just search userscripts.org for last.fm percentages and last.fm play statistics.
- gamesector, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hell, why not - http://www.last.fm/user/gamesector
- quiksliver, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i made the "official" digg last.fm group
http://www.last.fm/group/DIGG.com%20Scrobblers - BrokenBrick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ya I've been all up on it since 2004. But that was when it was just AudioScrobbler, since all I really wanted to do was track my listening tastes with graphs and whatnot. Last.fm is alright though, the best thing I think is music events, an easy way to keep up with artists tours and such. Anyways, my two cents
- tacom8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i don't understand how actual playtime per artists is any more representative of who you like then play count of songs per artist. On some level you had to have chosen to listen to that song. It just isn't going to work if you just leave your music on 24/7 and expect it to figure out that half the music you have you aren't really into. The only way to get meaningful output is to put some sort of human interaction into what you are scrobbling. I dunno maybe its just the way we listen to music, some people just let er buck others pick and choose as they go.
However, i agree with Hide, the "similar artists" is the only thing i am finding useful with last.fm, and ya it doesn't matter what ya do those 55 minute rock epics are goona screw you over. - cruzlee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2www.last.fm/user/cruzlee
Too bad I will never, ever be able to undo the damage done by that Jeff Beck album on repeat while I was sleeping..... - neau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Are you sure it is not a mix, because according to Last.fm their tracks are with normal lenght (~4 minutes)?
- Irfit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Block him everyone, if he gets enought blocks he will probably be banned.
- Jamfa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's called Normalising, it uses the data already submitted by you too last.fm and then uses musicbrainz.org 's database and calculates each artists average track length then gives you a chart based upon that data.
http://www.associativetrails.com/stuff/normalisefm/
And it's not really about what you play, it's about what you discover, I have easily found over a thousand bands I love on last.fm just in a year. And I agree, this guide looks like a beginners guide.
The best hidden feature is rolling over the total tracks played and it telling you average tracks per day :) - oblongmouth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Only your profile is remotely close to mine from these diggers, so I added you http://www.last.fm/user/oblongmouth
- navitatl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pretty sure. http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=15028
I was exaggerating about the 4 hours, but they have at least 20 songs that are over an hour. Their average length is 30-40 minutes. - notforsale, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.last.fm/user/fgl/
I'll play & whore myself out too.
Man, you guys need to listen to more music... - oblongmouth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1oblongmouth's eclectic score is
86/100 - SunAlex, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0good article, but not for me. Not my music.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1PandoraFM is a nice idea but I can't see a way to set it up to ONLY submit the songs I want it to send. It puts every song on a timer, even if you give it a thumbs down on pandora. Pandora is good but it also plays a lot of crap and I'm not always watching it.
Be cool if PandoraFM gave you an option to only send over the songs you approve rather than put all songs on a timer to be sent to last.fm. - marerittet, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2last.fm has one of the least reliable pieces of software i've EVER seen
- paulua, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Might also want to check out Soundflavor - looks like they've got full song streams online now
- joaob, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2whats up with that sony ad?
- CrispyMo, on 10/10/2007, -15/+7somebody's lonely...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3I prefer Pandora
