- rgtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The term PowerToy implies that it was made by the Windows development team.
- Avian00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cool utility! I'm glad to see something like this that I don't have to pay for. Especially since this type of functionality has been native to Linux and MacOS for quite some time now... but I digress!
- suprfli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3isn't this an old powertoy? and why is it hosted on someone's personal site rather than a link to MS's?
- spuggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're just looking to mount the ISO in windows, you can use a free Microsoft utility located here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe
All the info for it is available in the MSDN Subscribers FAQ.
Downloading the program right now; 454 megs sounds...a tad excessive for a CD Burning program, but we'll see... - Mike_N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like only the paid version of Deep Burner can create an ISO, so aside from, ISO Recorder, how do you make an ISO for free on Windows...?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
XP CD Burner
http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
FREE....Handles ISO, Audio and Data :) - oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually it does work with SP2 i just finished using it and it works perfectly!
- meembo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've used this (and previous versions) on many XP installations, and it's very useful. Bigg Digg!
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It can create ISOs of existing CDs? DVDs? What about copy protected media?
- Inzoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dvd decrypter is dead.. all that is left is called ImgBurn and is one of the best images burners around...
- colebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did this years ago with a shell extension and some vb gui stuff wrapped around mkisofs...
maybe I should have marketed it...
Anyway, this kind of "power toy" (not PowerToy) is quite useful...
I would download it if I didn't already have another solution... - Hyperion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had this for a year or two now, and love it. Doesn't offer that many features but is good for simple ISO burns.
- miligo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Year 2000, meet Windows, Windows meet year 2000
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a really ***** program! When you go to uninstall it, make sure you uninstall any optical drives on your pc and then reboot (so that they reinstall automatically) because you won't be able to use them otherwise.
- TPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey to those who say "This stinks!" at least give a reason why it stinks. Be constructive.
- tburke261, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had it for quite sometime now, it's nice not having to open up Alcohol 120% whenever i need to burn an ISO
- jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is nice, but it is missing gobs of features. 1 - It only burns CDs, not DVDs. 2 - It only handles ISO files, what about BINs, Nero or Alcohol Images?
For it to be useful to me it would have to do the above plus - be a general purpose ISO reader/creator. Meaning it could make an iso from a CD/DVD, create a custom ISO from scratch (see barts PE), mount images; plus you could open existing ISOs and add/remove/change them in whatever way you see fit.
That functionality seems outside the scope of this program, which is fine; it just makes the software less useful than many other free options. Seeing as an ISO image (or bin/cue) is just a concatenation of everything on a CD (including TOC, filesystem etc) I don't see why this is so hard. Just another reason I am glad I have Linux around. - TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, can it do bootable ISOs for live linux distros?
- olego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had this powertoy for about 3-4 years... Talk about old news!
- kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grand.
Dug. - akira_x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great! I've been waiting for the SP2 update!
- Shizlak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Terrible program, NEVER works.
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It works fine with SP2, you just have to use the proper version
- codeoptimist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using this for a while, and I've found it to be useful in a pinch. +digg
- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i use this in a corporate environment.
it works well enough. - dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ISO PowerToy does not work on Vista Build 5270. It crashes giving an error "unable to open [certain] .dll file"
- n8han, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not just OS X, ISO burning is built into almost every operating system. I was shocked when XP came out and still couldn't burn them (so I used the clunky powertoy with it). But Vista?!? Uh, Microsoft, just add the feature already. It's pitiful.
- zakharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why does it have to be installed as a service??
- spuggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoops, wrong file-size; was looking at something else :P. Yeah--300+K is a bit nicer ;)
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually I didn't find that from the Linux article, I was just looking for a quick freeware program to build an iso for Enemy Nations when it was on here and stumbled accross this. Thought it might be Digg worthy, so here it is
- electricalen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@astrotrain: (CD Burner XP) A great program! I use it all the time. It's one drawback, however, is that it cannot create ISO images from CDs or DVDs. At least the free version. If this ISO powertoy can do it, and it's free, that would complement that program and replace Roxio and Nero.
- Xtra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone knows for the best ISO utility that does it ALL you use MagicISO. Take a look
at a screen shot of it right here that I just uploaded.

I think they have a free/trial version. If you really want it im sure usenet has it or your favorite torrent. - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So we can burn our linux cds and switch!
- gers4302, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It Stinks!
- Plezops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did anyone else notice that he left his product ID out there for the world?
- hass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had this for a while and it works great. I made backups of all my driver CDs with it. I don't know if it works with copy protected CDs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a great tool. Used it forever. Love it.
Did you know that this capability (creating and mounting ISO images) is built into Windows XP? If you read the history of this powertoy, you'll see that this was native functionality in the early "Whistler" XP betas, but it was later removed. Turns out that they basically removed the interface for the ability, but not the guts. So Alex Feinman came along and made it useful again for us. :-) - DECjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the XP/Windows 2003 Resource kit, MS has a simple command-line utility called CDBURN.EXE and DVDBURN.EXE. it's very simplistic but usable. A description from Windows Help and Support:
"ISO CD-ROM Burner Tool (CDBurn) is a command-line tool that allows the user to write (burn) data images from image files located on the hard drive to compact disc (CD) recordable (CD-R) and CD rewritable (CD-RW) media. The data image can be any kind of data, even raw data. This tool can also be used to erase CD-RW media."

ISO Recorder does mention "...has been a free tool (for personal use)." note "personal use." Whatever works for you...
cheers

However been using it for years now. Welcome to 2006. - kplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is bad.. shouldn't have used the term Power Toy which as many other point out makes people think it's an official microsoft app.
- Digg - ddod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Been using this forever...
- crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. This tool is on the MSDN download site for subscribers. They tell you to use ISORecorder or Daemon Tools.
- Xplorer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great tool.... but OLD NEWS.....
How did this make the front page....
NO DIGG
This app has been available for years .... First public release was back on 11/10/01......
Buried....... - nebbyfoshebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I feel really stupid... I cant seem to get it to work. It just opens and closes really fast. can eh.. anyone tell me how to fix my problem?
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"did anyone else notice that he left his product ID out there for the world?
posted by plezops (1) at"
He must have fixed it then, must be a different pic than the one you saw earlier. - vicneanschi, on 01/09/2009, -0/+0WOW! This is probably the most powerful tool I've ever used to burn isos. One of its advantages is a cool and user-friendly interface. DUGG!
signature: http://www.world-tools.com/ - uglysmurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried this the other day...right clicked on *.iso, and only "Burn to CD" was available, though it was a dvd image. I couldn't find any way to 'burn to dvd'? Anyone have any input?
- TheGSRGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy useful tool, Batman!
- suffolk757, on 01/26/2009, -0/+0Silly question, but why does this program support Windows 7, when Windows 7 FINALLY has ISO recording built in.
- Iam8up, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used this powertoy on many sites, all XP SP2. I've used it on nLite installs, retail/oem installs, etc.
