- obtix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8... Something I could really use. Something I don't want to pay for.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5As an aside, try pressing ALT+0233 on the number pad (or maybe that's 0223).
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3>>"having a menubar on ever single window is horrible waste of screen real estate"
>If you think that, then all you have to do is MAXIMIZE THE APP. Then you have a menu at the top of the screen, just like the Mac. See, other OSs give you the flexibility to have the menus either way. You want to talk about modern? Talk about OSs that have evolved over time, instead of stubbornly refusing to admit mistakes and adopt enhancements (two-button mouse, anyone?).
>Think your arguments through before embarrassing yourself.
Have you even heard of Fitt's law? Yes, when you maximize under Windows the menus are near the top of the screen, but that's not what's important. In OS X the menus are at the *very top* of the screen, effectively making them infinitely deep. They're much bigger targets, and you can point to them much faster than the menubar in Windows. See http://www.asktog.com/columns/022DesignedToGiveFitts.html
OS X has supported multi-button mice for years. Try criticizing something that's really wrong with OS X, like the Dock or the Finder. - JStewart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hi, I'm from Otaku Software, the developers of TopDesk. Thanks for all the diggs :)
Regarding memory use, you can significantly reduce TopDesks memory use by going into the Options dialog and selecting "Use less memory (slower)". This'll cut memory use by more than half, at the expense of being a little slower on older systems.
For all the users complaining that it should be free, you're forgetting that Windows XP doesn't have the whizz-bang graphics subsystem that OS X does. Trying to pull off an Expose-like effect using what's basically a 15yr old graphics API slapped on top of video cards it was never designed to take advantage of is *non-trivial*. To give you some perspective, TopDesk is 70k lines of code and took over a year to develop. If you don't want to pay $10 (less than the price of a movie ticket) for this kind of functionality, I'd suggest that you try writing your own version instead of complaining.
Specifically, "geminitojanus", if it's such a small and trivial piece of software, why not slap together your own version over the weekend (or in one night, if you're a 1334 c0d3r) and release it as open source? :) - luminoir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Expose is argueably the only part of the Mac OS X GUI that is worth ripping off.
The rest of the GUI is really nothing much to shout about.
Case in point will be keyboard shortcuts.
Sure you can open the system settings and customise them, but doing that for every app is nonsense. Whereas in windows, just hit Alt and follow the sequence of underlined keys
and you can have a shortcut that breezes through multiple drop-down menus (another OS X Bugbear) quickly and easily.
Most Mac zealots are mouse centric users that love that the menu bar is flush to the top (infinite throw, etc) but hey i don't even need to move the mouse to get there so what's the problem?
OS preferences are personal but Mac zealotry is simply out of this world. - kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I saw "Expose for Windows" I was like yeaaaaaaaa then I saw it wasn't free and I was like nooooooooo.
No ++ - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use Macs in my school's computer labs (they also have Win Boxes which tend to be virused, and Linux boxes which are always either broken or taken). I typically have 4+ terminals, a couple of text editors, web browser, a couple iChat conversations, and Firefox open at the same time. It gets pretty ugly switching between windows without a taskbar where each open window gets a separate button. I'm not trying to sound too *****, but I strongly prefer virtual desktops to 'hunting down' windows with the expose system and task bar where each program gets an icon (instead of each window).
- bogaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where there is a trial, there is a crack
- jtms1200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use a Mac where I work and a PC at home... this is freaking great... digg AND I definitely will be dropping the measly 10 bucks to buy it.
- orph3us, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1reflex vision is better than all the others I've tried. Not resource intensive and much better than topdesk if all you want is expose functionality. Topdesk screwed up my games when I launched them. They got a lot slower. Don't dig leobaby down
- Girth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i posted this because in my opinion it has better animations. and i like that.:D
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im sorry but years of experience using a real mouce, one that has more than one button, have trained me to use the freaking task mar and min/max buttons. Bells and Whistles are pointless wastes of resources.
- Paul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks good but i'm not paying money for something that should be built into my os or at least a free "power toy"
- tommis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I mirrored the trial"??
Sure way to get spyware/trojans on your machine: download+install from places you dont know are safe. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can't polish a turd, but you can put it in a box and tie a pretty ribbon around it.
- tendrils, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks cool, but it should for as much RAM as it uses.
- tekmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would suggest looking at this open source alternative called SmallWindows: http://smallwindows.sourceforge.net/
Also, expire: http://expire.free.fr/layout.html
iEx: http://www.oxygen-inc.com/premium/InsaniSoft/iEx.htm - LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the idea of an Expose app on my PC, since I use it all the time on my projects on the macs at my college, but there's no way I'm paying for it. I know it's only 10 bucks but I'm a college student. I need that 10 bucks to buy a pre-made term paper, not a nifty app. Oh well. Maybe someone will make a free ware version of it.
- speedyink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I got the free winplosion, and holds a steady 6megs of RAM to use. Works great. And all you ***** retards fighting over Macs and PC's, get a ***** life, its called personal opinion, people have a ***** right to it. Take that where intelligent people dont have to hear it. Thank you
- onefish2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tried it. Very cool app. Was using 101MB of RAM. Sorry, I will live with out it. I will give it a Digg anyway.
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why are you all so negative? This is great software, albeit unoriginal (but what isn't?). It runs quickly (at least with my 7800gtx) and very much resembles the mac version, At least try the trial before bashing it. I mirrored the trial's setup:
http://www.herzka.com/TopDeskTrialSetup.exe - inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1No, it doesn't. It does something entirely different.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If multiple mouse buttons are so 'needed', why do the laptops still only come with 1 mouse button on the trackpad?
dumbass ignathius"
I'd like the answer to that as well, drives me nuts and is one of the few things I really hate about my iBook - kafka47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note : WinPlosion is NOT free. Its a 7-day trial, too.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been a TopDesk user for about 5 months. Its a great program. Works just like expose, and is quite quick if you have moderately modern hardware (slowest machine I have used it on is 1.2GHz Pentium M Donathan with Intel GMA900 Graphics). Some problems which so far have not been addressed:
1. Totally gets F$#%ed up when explorer crashes and restarts
2. Sometimes randomly errors on boot (no idea why).
3. Won't work with any GTK+ based apps (GAIM or GIMP for example)
Other than that, it is a great app that I would recomend. - embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use a Mac at home and it's nice to have an Exposé on Windows at the office. TopDesk is pretty good. Although it doesn't work in the main application I use Exposé at home for on the Mac - "Photoshop". If you press F10 with TopDesk in Photoshop it doesn't show the individual images open - just the main UI. Not really a fault of TopDesk - it's just the way the Windows version of Photoshop is wired up.
- coOLcAT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, but what doesn't work under Fitt's law is the fact that OS X icons at the bottom of the screen keep switching places - can't use my positional memory if they keep getting moved around every time you open or close a program.
- mixpix405, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd like to take a moment to make notes on the majority of comments here - "Not as good as Exposè on Mac": Windows isn't mac. Take this as a compliment to Mac that Windows users want to be like you. Stop whining. - "ITS NOT FREE - NO DIGG!": When the hell did digg.com become only good for FREEWARE? I thought digg was a tech news site - at least thats what all the OTHER whiners say ("THIS ISNT TECH NEWS! NO DIGG!"... makes me laugh). Stop whining. - and finally "Im not paying for that POS software!": Good for you. Stop whining.
So in summary: Stop whining.
Thank you. - mixpix405, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ opera who said:
"Here's my advice: Either you buy Mac OSX which has this for free (that's right, you don't have to pay extra for it), or get Linux where everything is free, both as in beer and as in -dom.
Damn it. anti-digg."
You, sir, are a pure dumbass. BUY OSX because it already has this feature? So spend around $1000 for this feature, since you cant "buy" Mac OSX? Yeah... BRILLIANT move. And "linux, where everything is free, both as in beer and as in -dom"? There are plenty of apps for Linux that cost money.
Christ... Wake the ***** up! - ChazKato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hahhaha, "1334 c0d3r" you can tell this guy is with it...
- zumpiez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"if multiple mouse buttons are so 'needed', why do the laptops still only come with 1 mouse button on the trackpad?"
I've never once seen a PC laptop that didn't have at least two mouse buttons on the pad. - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Vista's version looks nicer than Expose. Since all of your running windows are actually 3d surfaces, Microsoft was able to do some nifty things....
- allancass, on 07/27/2008, -1/+1Hide Windows Free - Hide From Prying Eyes Quickly
This all in one boss key application can hide windows, mute sound, switch display mode, hide tray icons and more with a key or a mouse shortcut. Once the threat has passed it returns all to the state before hiding windows. There is also paid version that provides even more functionality in order to protect your privacy. A must have tool!
http://www.hide-windows.net - mixpix405, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Note: We know winplosion isnt free. But, if you would have read the comments before you commented, you would have seen the link to the cups game, in which you can win a free license for it. For your convenience: http://www.winplosion.com/cupgame/3cups.html
- Meowmix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm.. I don't use Expose for switching apps, that's what Command +Tab is for.
Expose is use for switching windows in individual apps. A good example is Dreamweaver, when I have to work on multiple documents at once. - MyScreenname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1While not totally "expose-ish" TaskSwitcherXP is a favorite of mine [ http://www.ntwind.com/taskswitchxp/ ] - its free and the best part is the ability to right click on the minimize button to send it to the system tray and out of your way.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This program is actually very good, have tried it out before. It is complete video hardware accelerated just like OS X. In other words it won't slow down your computer when you use it and transitions will appear smooth. The other expose programs out there suck, but this one is well done.
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Blastcube
4 buttons
right/left, squeeze, mouse-ball click - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm it pretty much turned into a Windows vs. Mac somewhere in here. Anyways,
"Windows gives lots of people problems. Those people are just less likely to be posting comments on digg."
if you don't know how to secure Windows, you are not an advanced user. You have proved yourself a noob. Seriously, it's not very hard. Use AVG for virus, Zonealarm or sygate for firewall, microsoft antispyware or ad-aware for spyware. Put those together you have a free package of defense. You can do more to protect yourself but, you can go look that up, that's just *basic* information. Now, if you couldn't secure Windows and you got viruses, spyware, you would probably switch to Mac thinking you get no viruses. It's a hard switch from Mac to Windows. I use both OS everyday and I find Windows is easier to use because it's intiutive, you know what you are doing, it's all there. The Expose thing for Mac is ok, it's a cool concept, I just hate how there's one menu bar for all the windows. For Windows (or atleast for me), this is useless, I'll stick with ALT+TAB. - ultimathule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It works fine for me. And I like it.
- blastcube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Talk about OSs that have evolved over time, instead of stubbornly refusing to admit mistakes and adopt enhancements (two-button mouse, anyone?).
Think your arguments through before embarrassing yourself."
It's called the MIghty Mouse (5 Buttons). It seems you just embarrassed yourself genius. - mattv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i love windows because i can use it without becoming a zealot.
- srwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems to work very well but is a memory hog (as one would expect). But if I did have 50-100 MB of RAM to spare I would definitely run it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it eats ram for breakfast and also if ur playing a game it gets jumpy and u need to close it right but when u have it installed alt tab is disabled to u have o quit shutdown topdesk and the restart the game but i still use it
- callinthelaw69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"i love windows because i can use it without becoming a zealot."
lmao - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in response to the first comment, entbloess isn't that great. I'm sorry I ever paid for it. Lock your screen, walk away and come back to a mess that makes you crash your computer.
- JimmyJohnJedi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hey... uh... XP power toys are free at microsoft.com and the alt-tab power toy is much better, faster and cheaper.... just thought you'd like to know.
- northLite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think the whole feature is pretty useless... Well I mean if I was using some inferior browser instead of Firefox without tabbed browsing Im sure this would be a lifesaver.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, windows doesn't really need it since it does have a start bar. But it is a decent feature nonetheless. See all open windows instantly and finding the one you want fast, rather than finding the one you want in the start menu.
- bpartridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I got a WinPLOSION license, as well... But it doesn't support multiple monitors like TopDesk does... The corner I'd like to use to activate WinPLOSION is the upper right corner of my left monitor. It only makes the furthest upper right corner (the right monitor) active. (I have monitors of different sizes, so the left one is the main, larger monitor.)
TopDesk gets my vote... Now if I didn't have to pay for it, then it'd be golden! -
