Just load it up in the background and let it slowly come to you... The server's having some issues (aside from the digg effect) but its still stable... just slow =) If it ever does load up, click an advert too =P - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Avast doesn't really slow your boot time, it just screws performance for a few seconds while it installs updates (I only update it once a week, but everytime it does it, it's annoying.. Less bad than an extra minute bootup time though)
And the thing about linux not having stuff like this is not true at all.. All those deamons starting up slow it down a lot. I had one system that was slowed down hugely because the NTP (Network Time Protocol) sync thing wasn't connection, which added a minute or so to the boot time.. Although with linux, the startup procedure is far more imformative, as it tells you whats starting up (in real time), and whats failing and slowing things down more etc..

The article is a pretty nice, clear bootup process guide. It reminds me of that ol' Black Viper site. I'm not quite sure of the name, since I haven't used Windows as my primary OS in a while. After a while, though, every operating system builds up cruft and it needs to be cleaned off.

As for what i normally have on, we'll there's Google Reader and two gmail accounts. The other open window usually overflows with "work related" (nothing fancy) tabbed-pages but not in that particular case. I just had to close it down a few minutes ago since it was keeping 350+ MB all to itself already. don't have that many extensions either.

The reason it is a 75 second boot time is not because it is just Windows. The article does mention that he did this testing on a virtual machine. The author also does not mention the specs of the computer he is running this virtual machine on. All in all, you can't exactly look at the number of seconds Windows is taking to boot up since the hardware makes a big difference and the virtual machine makes it even slower yet. It's asking people to click the ads from your site that gets you into trouble. I had italic text over my banner saying "Please support our sponsors" and Google said that wasn't okay (and they warned me first) but said that asking people to support your site in other forums etc was okay.
Basically, you can't solicit clicks on the actual site. You can't tell your friends to just go to the site and click, but you can tell them that visiting the advertisers will support your efforts.
Of course, if you aren't sure: Ask Google. To help speed this up, the cache them. Multiple windows opened with multiple tabs you ask? Fire Fox will go ahead and cache the last ten pages for each tab in every window. There are some ways to try and help speedup fire fox and limit its memory usage.

I've found that VMWare makes a HUGE impact on boot time on our configs; way more than any other app on this list outside of Visual Studio 2005 (which can hang on the web services if Symantec is installed). Since when does Photoshop have any impact at all at boot time? all i know of is the gamma correction applet, but thats tiny.

A better gauge would be what the installer says is requires space during install time for your selected options. Use a firewall (rulebased one like black ice defender) and Firefox and you wont get virus from the Interweb. WHy degrade you pc perfomance with a realtime scanning process ?
