- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Spectacular. BTW, stop saying old. I didn't know about this greasemonkey script so therefore this digg served its purpose.
- hollerith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Greasemonkey is a firefox extension - 'A User Script manager for Firefox'. It allows you to run client-side scripts (usually used to modify pages you visit in some way). Scripts usually can do 'cool stuff' like remove ads, add links, or alter the layout of the page to suit you. This user script adds links to mirrors of the digg article on cache servers so that you don't get timeouts (the digg effect) as everybody on digg tries to hit the swamped servers.
Good stuff digg++
(careful with those scripts though - trusting ones) - lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would end the "digg effect" only if Digg implemented it themselves. A few dozen people using this userscript doesn't make a difference. This should be a Digg feature.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is old but useful. There's also a GreaseMonkey script to block stories that contain selected keywords. I'm thinking of blocking everything that mentions Apple or Mac...
- Woofcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i used it before this storry but i'll digg becuase it is usefull.
- jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It won't end it, what if the site wasn't cached?
- tellman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg it for the concept, but i whish it woud actualy work as advertised! most of the icons lead to dead links or 404s
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would be nice if every site was actually cached... this doesn't work for most pages that have been digged to death
- dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wish sites were auto-coralized.....but if people just use the coral link, it should work great
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I already use the Coralize It extention (http://www.coralcdn.org/bin/mozilla/coralize.xpi), but I'll gladly put another into my arsenal.

BTW - This is a USERSCRIPT not an EXTENSION, and is far less vulnerable to breaking due to dot releases than an extension coded to a shifting API set. - clemonator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah this works up until there is a point release and every extension writer will have to rewrite his or her code to adjust. NO DIGG.

- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kewl
- Beacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've known about that extension for a while, but I thought that I found it because it was Dugg in the first place. Hasn't this hit the front page before?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Old, but extremely useful. Digg+
- yuga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin mention in the TWiT podcast that they will not cache pages because it will defeat the purpose of digg. It would also hurt the traffic of the target site if they were all cached.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"There is an improved digg ad remover on the same site. No more 2" whitespace at the top of the page."
link for the lazy? - seuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It won't stop the dig effect, even if everyone used it.
The dig/slashdot effect is from server overloading. Having a cache of the page is fine, but what about the images? They still reside on the original server and are by far the biggest killer of bandwidth and connections.
Sorry no dig for you. perhaps you could think about a better title. - d0zy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0been using this for a few months now,
sometimes i click'em
meh - rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using CacheOut, works great:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1453&application=firefox - psyon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why doesn't Digg just automatically coralize submitted links?
- Muzical84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't work for me. Installed Gresemonkey and got an error when I tried to install the script.
- iSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is important, and it doesn't look half-bad either, though it doesn't match the digg site fully. At least it's not ugly.
- seuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hardly, this is the title that would attract people."
Yes but it is misleading, it won't end the dig effect.
This is the problem where people are using digg as an advertising medium for thier blogs and other things. But it negatively reflects the quailty of the articles being posted on digg.
Why do people beleive that they should obscure the facts so that people will dig thier article? Even when it is of no benefit to the poster? Why can't people post just the facts? Instead of following "the media" and trying to get cleaver with thier titles.
This IMOHO is why the quality of digs articles are on average much lower than those of slashdot. - misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@celticagent: Assuming you are running Firefox 1.5, install the Firefox Extension "Greasemonkey" via https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=748&application=firefox
Once you get that installed correctly (you'll see a little monkey face at the bottom of the Firefox window), you can install the "Add Mirrors" script via http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807
If you are unfamiliar with Firefox or Extensions or Scripts, these are the sources to find your answers. You'll also find hundreds of extension that add tweaks to Firefox, such as speeding it up (pipelining), downloading options, PDF options, Gmail and Y! Mail checkers, Ad blockers, weather forecasters, and tons of others. Sorry, I don't know how much you know and this may be condenscending, if so, apologies.

http://userscripts.org/ - MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One, the script is not an extension. And two, It doesn't "Fix" the digg effect at all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can someone explain how this works to a fuddy-duddy like me?
- briguyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha, I installed this extension about 20 minutes before this was posted.
- timendum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0see my script if you are in alexadex: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3233
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this work with Opera's UserJS?
- realnebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kevin should add these links to the actual digg site.
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@felz - absolutely. I commented on that in the second comment in this thread.
Unlike Firefox users needing to install the Greasemonkey extension, this is a feature of Opera. Just save the *.user.js file into the JScript directory where you have Opera installed, and restart Opera.
Be warned - the script only works if the links have been cached, otherwise you get nothing. - wmitchell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sometimes I wonder do the digg developers like crashing other peoples servers / killing bandwidth etc...
If there was no longer a digg effect on a site i.e. all links just where coral cached where would the "dam it those diggers called my server" news. Its kinda a form of marketing if you know what i mean. - northLite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sorry no dig for you. perhaps you could think about a better title."
Hardly, this is the title that would attract people. I came across this yesterday and did a search for it, 2 other stories with the same greasemonkey script. Search and take a look at their headlines.
"Firefox extension" is much more attractive than "greasemonkey script" and "end the digg effect" is also better than "possibly subdue the digg effect temporarily, maybe". - PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AtTrOpHeeD said "There is an improved digg ad remover on the same site. No more 2" whitespace at the top of the page."
You could do the same thing with AdBlock Plus by blocking http://digg.com/*#DIV(google-broad)
seuss said "Having a cache of the page is fine, but what about the images? They still reside on the original server and are by far the biggest killer of bandwidth and connections."
Coral does images, too, IIRC. - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@donolsen - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2310 ... the Digg de-n00ber script .. lets you filter based on keywords.
- donolsen1155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How bout a greasemonkey script to filter out diggs about Firefox extensions!!!!!!!!!!!
- northLite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of people found this useful, but it would have gone unnoticed like the previous submissions of this same story without a catchy headline.
The headline/description doesn't have any effect on the fact that this is a useful tool. - GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If somebody wrote a program that quickly scanned the rss feed, and visited coralcache of that link right away, it would help. Usually by the time you need to use the coral cache, it's too late. It only works if someone uses it before it is hosed, so that Coral can get a copy to then serve everybody.
- Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they added this feature into digg, wouldn't that take away traffic from the websites? I think they already discussed this once before on a diggnation.
- mozillaman0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one word
CACHEOUT!!
it's a firefox extension that ive used for a long time - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Kevin should add these links to the actual digg site."
but then again, its another 3 links per story. With 20/page or whatever, that's 60 links. That can add upp in the size department. At least with this script, you're not transferring so much data. - jeremymerrill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. The site hosting this is suffering from teh digg effect. What irony.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0instead of having to use greasemonkey *and* another script, just use an extension. I wrote an extension that does this a few months ago, called Cacheout. I'm actively looking for more caching services that I can add, so far it uses CoralCDN, then Google. I'm looking to add in searches for Yahoo and MSN soon too. http://download.thetechgurus.net/extensions/cacheout.xpi
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ooh mama the digg effect
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0site is dead ;-)

What is Digg?
