- zemote, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Just setup a demo site for people to try out and break. Enjoy: http://test.zemote.com/drupal6/
- vermin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Joomla has 131K+ members, Drupal has 180K+ members. Joomla has 1836 extensions, Drupal has 2208 modules. When you say that the Joomla community is bigger and has more addons.. something doesn't add up here.
- vermin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Drupal is a powerful web-application-framework/CMS.
The new module specific tpl files look especially interesting for the most customized experience. - GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yes... "their content management system is nowhere near on par with e107" .... BECAUSE? Reason we ask is because sweeping statements with no info from a complete stranger is usually skipped over. Especially when the company couldn't even be bothered to give the CMS a decent name.
- Juanzo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Sweet! Drupal keeps growing and getting better.
- greensky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The demo is a bare bones install. The power of Drupal is the flexibility of it's architecture and the things you can do with Drupal modules.
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I've actually found Drupal to be easier to use than Joomla. But maybe that's just me.
- mmmgood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Drupal can be tricky to get to grips with, but it's very powerful.
- jswaby, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4I helped test this beta release of Drupal 6 and have to admit it is a very clean system.
From a web dev framework, the API is as clean as the Java API. From a CMS standpoint, it has handled everything I've been able to throw at it.
But the one thing I did notice was that the API changes too much. If you build a module or theme for a platform (version 5), you'll more than likely have to change it for newer versions of the system (version 6). Because it's open source, your fav module or theme might not be available for the newest version of drupal because the developer isn't upgrading it to the newest version, or they may have abandoned it all together due to life reasons (paid work, family responsibilities, etc). - landowneyes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I don't have a strong background in php or programming in general, but I was able to customize Drupal pretty extensively - http://www.gosleepgo.com/. Once you learn your way around a bit, modification is pretty simple.

- http://cvs.drupal.org/viewvc.py/drupal/drupal/CHANGELOG.txt?revision=1.223&view=markup - sgluskin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This release is a testament to the vitality of the Drupal community and it's commitment to fast, quality-driven development cycles. To the world this simply means, "Drupal is healthy and growing." Unless you are a geek or a Drupal insider, however, you won't see much on the demo nor will the news mean that much. It really means that companies and orgs who have jumped on board with Drupal have made a good investment and can expect lots of good things to come.
- akor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Finally drupal 6 beta is released. Definite need to try.
Thank you guys for you hard work! - CircleFusion, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Why?
How?
More detail please.
Explain your reasoning.
Thanks. - burningjonny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I have to admit, I'm a Joomla! lover. That doesn't mean I'm closed-minded though...I wonder how Drupal 6 and Joomla! 1.5 stack up against each other?
- AmyStephen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Excellent job! Congratulations to the Drupal Community and WOW! What a great Software Freedom Day gift to the world!
- shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3thats 18 cents more than most people.
- CircleFusion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why am I getting dugg down for asking a very valid question?
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Could you enable the OpenID option? I'd like to see how different it is from Drupal 5's.
Thanks in advance. - 8bitclassics, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I have tried and used many open source CMS systems in the past, and always thought Drupal while had promise, was lacking compared to the likes of Mambo/Joomla. 5.0 was a step in the right direction, but still not there. Will give 6.0 a test, but looking more at Joomla 1.5 and it's changes. Will give them both a fair shake though.
- diuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It seems that drupal 6 is easier to theme due to modules being able to generate .tpl files. Before trying to modify the contact form, for example, felt more a task for a hacker than for a designer, I honestly hope Drupal does good, but in my view they need more designers on board for making the application more visually sophisticated.
- stevensj2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'll have to check this out. I've used Drupal several times in the past, from personal sites for myself, to business sites for clients.
The only gripe I have with Drupal is that some of the "language" and nomenclature/terms they use are either a little too..."academic"...for the casual user, and/or inconsistent throughout (taxonomy vs categories, etc).
I can't compare it to Joomla or other options since I have not used them as extensively, but after using Drupal, it would take a lot for another system to really impress me.
Good work, guys! - sgluskin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Way to go Drupal folks who worked on the beta! Drupal is awesome, the community fantastic, the platform elegant. Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard on yet another great step in helping folks make sophisticated web sites based on open-source code.
- webchickenator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Between the referenced post and the CHANGELOG.txt in the root of the installation, that pretty well covers them. :)
- xamox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Drupal, drupal, drupal, drupal, druuuuuuuupal. Everyone sing with me now. Props to the core dev crew for getting the beta dropped.
- chadu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2me likey the drupal. so glad to see 6 come, can't wait to begin development in it!
- bpocanada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Love it, hate it but the truth is Drupal community is very tech savvy and is coming out with new features that are not present in any other CMS. PHPTemplate Engine is very flexible and you can pretty much theme any layout. Drupal is a Content Management Framework and like any other framework - it may need some learning but once you get to know the API and how to get things done, you'd understand how flexible the system is. For an end user who knows no tech - my advise would be to reasearch on the internet on which platform has got large traffic websites compared to other CMS and compare the look, feel, support and to some extent even talk to the site owners.
I have come across many end user threads looking to move their sites from Joomla to Drupal but hardly any the other way around. With version 6 feature of just Internationalization itself you'll see Drupal being embraced by many more across the world - far more than anyone could imagine.
If you are a PHP/mySQL developer and want to invest your time, do consider Drupal seriously. - Bamborzled, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Drupal is much more flexible than Joomla. A Joomla site will always look like a Joomla site, whereas a Drupal site can be themed to look like anything you want. Case in point: http://www.theonion.com/ . You wouldn't know that The Onion's site ran Drupal unless somebody told you or unless you scanned the source code.
Of course, this flexibility comes with a slight learning curve, in my opinion. - Matt2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm using Drupal for the first time on a site, and while I can appreciate it's flexibility and structure from a programmer's standpoint, I'm using off-the-shelf CMS software because I don't want to reinvent the wheel, and I'm a little frustrated by the lack of cohesion in the community addon modules. I think I'd be happier with something a little more pre-packaged, targeting common needs.
- Raval, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can use Drupal to do both with great ease.
- dvessel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1PHP hardcore wizards? I think not. All that's needed is some patients and the ability to adapt. Drupal has a certain set of conventions and if you choose to ignore that, you'll be in for a bumpy ride. You don't even need to touch php code in some cases. Just CSS/xHTML.
- Raval, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I tried Mambo and Joomala and a few other CMS before picking Drupal. Joomala/Mambo had an easier installer but I found the management and categorizing of content confusing and painful.
Joomala/Mambo MAY have been easier to install in the past but Drupal has catch-ed up on this and it was normally for people who use other CMSs to point this out but you almost never hear any complaints about managing content and I think it's because Drupal does such a wonderful job compared to other CMSs out there. - kvocal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I like Drupal, sadly the application is not very easy to use. I am an IT guy but I find the application hard to understand. Does anyone know who they are targeting with the software?
- djangoxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can you give a brief elaboration on how you've accomplished that?
What sources have you used and how much php programming was involved? - chrisherberte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For assistance converting existing Drupal themes to D6 contact Chris via http://www.xweb.com.au
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2One bug I notice is that I can scroll right but there is nothing there except an abrupt and horrible cut off, if I resize the window is resized to fit.
I assume its because of the large image at the bottom of the post, I wish sites would stop assuming specific widths on things :/ - Raval, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When I started using Drupal 2 years ago I had no clue how to log into a website with FTP or how to use phpMyadmin. It took me a month to figure out how to use Drupal.
As I started to learn I started to realize how powerful and flexible it was as a CMS, at one point I had switched to a another CMS or two but I came back because I never found a better CMS.
Try it once more and stick with it for awhile even if it just a test site and you'll see in time how great it is. - dvessel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sure, out of the box forums is the same. Doesn't mean it can't be changed to your liking.
- implicated, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1after taking a look at this article and looking into drupal I really have to wonder what I was thinking using joolma instead...time to switch, what a fiasco it will be after all this custom coding...
any help?
http://www.print-postage.onlinepostage.yi.org/ - webbua, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I don't know why but I think Drupal is always the real (I mean, talented or who really has something to say) writer's choice -- just an observation.
http://laptop.amazon-info.cn/ - CircleFusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I asked the same thing as GreenAlien, but I get dugg down and he gets dugg up. This place is nuts.
- dvessel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The only way anyone would think e107 is better if if your completely uninformed. I've used e107 as my first CMS. Sure I was amazed myself but I had no clue. Looking back at it now, it's a complete mess.
- taherk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cant wait for drupal 6 to come out... Good job team

http://www.talupo.com - NiteWatcher, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0Out of the box forums at least has better support than this... http://drupal.org/node/93127 ... especially if and when you need "free" (not paid) support. Thanks guys for showing me what not to use, too. :)
- SBC82, on 01/04/2008, -0/+0I use Drupal 6.0 rc 1 for one of my sites right now its buggy in some instances but it does do alot better then the other content management systems out there, plus the Drupal community is awesome they are really quick to reply and help with simple problems, I personally suggest it to anyone considering a awesome platform
http://www.seekbc.ca - GreenAlien, on 10/14/2007, -2/+2I'm holding tight for the Joomla 1.5 release (Why didn't they call it Joomla 2.0 given it's a huge rewrtie!). Can't be long now - they're already over schedule. If Drupal 6 comes out first then I'll take a closer look (Though unlikely because Joomla 1.5 has been in beta for a good while now).
- jookle, on 12/31/2007, -0/+0Drupal 6 now
