"LOL, i like drop box"
"i use it everyday!!!"
"just set it and forget it!"
Makes it even more suspicious that a lot of these guys recently signed up or only dugg this story... - MrEdwardo, on 09/11/2008, -22/+91The mac client absolutely kicks ass. The integration into the OS is just awesome! And they didn't even pay me to say that...
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -9/+68all these comments seem like spam…
nothing gets that many comments that fast before it hits front page… - warplayer, on 09/11/2008, -25/+73This is the best damn app you will download all year. I have setup a whole dropbox network between my friends and family - we LOVE it!
- WikzoDK, on 09/11/2008, -25/+61Really great application. And free! :D
- mongrel, on 09/11/2008, -4/+33Even more odd that everyone is correctly capitalizing "Dropbox." Puh-lease
- mdraper, on 09/11/2008, -2/+29So like, how are they going to make money?
- cabbagemofo, on 09/11/2008, -5/+27Look at all the comments. SpamBox. Now I lost interest and I will get dugg down from these spamming *****
- jkgm, on 09/11/2008, -6/+27Because synchronized network storage is exactly the same thing as a local hard drive. Error code ID10T!
- jotux, on 09/11/2008, -5/+25dropbox love you long time.
- DigitAl56K, on 09/11/2008, -2/+21Dropbox might be a nice application, but it has *horrible* privacy terms!
http://www.getdropbox.com/terms#privacy
"Compliance with Laws and Law Enforcement. Dropbox cooperates with government and law enforcement officials and private parties to enforce and comply with the law. We will disclose any information about you to government or law enforcement officials or private parties as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate to respond to claims and legal process (including but not limited to subpoenas), to protect the property and rights of Dropbox or a third party, to protect the safety of the public or any person, or to prevent or stop any activity we may consider to be, or to pose a risk of being, illegal, unethical, inappropriate or legally actionable."
My interpretations is that they may disclose your information even without a subpeona at their discretion including:
- "to protect the rights of a third party": maybe someone claiming you infringed their copyright or have a document about them they don't think you should have in your possession?
- "to protect the safety of the public or any person": So with no subpoena if someone claims you threatened them will they give your files to law enforcement?
- "to prevent or stop any activity we may consider to be, or to pose a risk of being, illegal, unethical, inappropriate or legally actionable": If they see you doing anything suspicious, which presumably means they'd have to be looking at your files, they might report you to the police or even worse, a higher agency. - inactive, on 09/11/2008, -2/+21he's one of them! kill it with fire!
- h4nne5, on 09/11/2008, -2/+21so true!
the sugarsync guy is pretty annoying, but all these dropbox fanboys are even worse? why would someone organize this? it's pretty embarrassing. - cjh79, on 09/11/2008, -2/+20Bingo. The first few dozen comments read like an infomercial...
- h4nne5, on 09/11/2008, -7/+24the comments are a bad joke!
sounds like a ***** commercial.
"i use it to sync my pc"
"my usb stick hates it"
"it has a public feature to"
"i'd love to pay 100$ for 50gb"
"it makes my armpits smell very nice"
wtf?!?! - frooo, on 09/11/2008, -1/+17Uhh.. you joined today just to plug SugarSync in the DropBox digg comments? That sounds an awful lot like spam to me.
... I also find it funny how you call 2 downmods "legions of dropbox spammers"... that sounds to me like you're suffering from delusions of grandeur, so here, have another one. - atariboy, on 09/11/2008, -21/+36I love Dropbox so much. Been using it constantly for the last 4 months. Solid!
- cooppw02, on 09/11/2008, -1/+16According to your profile, activity, and this page, http://www.getdropbox.com/about you are one of the developers. Why didn't you identify yourself?
This reeks of spam. - chroko, on 09/11/2008, -3/+16(1) Build widget.
(2) ????
(3) Try to sell the company to Google because they didn't have a business plan. - icurnvs, on 09/11/2008, -2/+14Objective eh?
You forgot to mention that the SugarSync service costs start at $2.49/month. - dwninjungleland, on 09/11/2008, -8/+19I was one of the first beta users.
I've had it installed on my computer for a good 4-5 months or so.
After initially playing with it, I haven't used it once.
Digg me down, but it's really just not that impressive.
It might be just that I don't have that much of a use for it (college student), but I feel like that's not the issue... - XenoSNK, on 09/11/2008, -1/+11Dugg for "why do you keep sending me this crap".
- RobotBuddha, on 09/11/2008, -2/+12Seriously. Worse, most of them seem to have the same "voice". I can't tell for sure if it's just astroturfing, or a combination of that and zombie zelotry. But in any case, it makes me want to use this a lot less.
- ryansmith18, on 09/11/2008, -2/+12...You're under the impression that you're paying for storage here?
Wtf? - falser, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10The same way every internet company makes money.
1) get a very large quantity of people to use your product
2) sell adds
3) sell upgrades
As long as you have #1, then you can fiddle with #2 and #3 all kinds of ways to make money. - sfacets, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10It's almost as if someone paid them off...
- ikmyer, on 09/11/2008, -2/+11soon they will allow for storage upgrades which will cost. The free beta accounts range from 2 to 5 gigs i think...
- frenetic3, on 09/12/2008, -1/+10yeah, we "spammed" twitter too -- http://search.twitter.com/search?q=dropbox
and lifehacker, and so on. it's called a public launch :)
anyway, well put from someone who curiously signed up on sep 11, 2008 -- don't you guys have a product to build? - Klisk, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10I agree, I love dropbox, but...
It's not really a network replacement unless you have an amazing internet connection. On my 1.5 down/up DSL it would take a long time to tranfer gigs back and forth between computers. - TheJalu, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10They will sell 50 gig accounts for 9,99 $ / month or 99,99$ / year
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -8/+16bury this article as spam.
- brewer, on 09/11/2008, -0/+8Well, this thread sure has contributed a lot of people to my "Blocked User" list!
- Culyt, on 09/11/2008, -1/+9These comments are complete ***** spam:
As a sterotypical member of the target audience I use Dropbox for stereotypical online storage action X because I'm cool, it is awesome, also I PLEDGE MY ALLEGIANCE TO DROP BOX, ALL HAIL DROPBOX THE ALMIGHTY, DESTROYER OF GDRIVE, GIVER OF ONLINE STORAGE, SUPPORTER OF NIECE MARKETS MAC & LINUX!
ARISE DROPBOX!, ARISE FROM THE DARKNESS! VANQUISH THINE ENEMIES!
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Dropbox R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!
☢ - frooo, on 09/11/2008, -0/+8Man, you really ought to learn to read - the dropbox web interface was designed for iphone in mind, but it can be accessed with any other mobile browser.
That means that dropbox has access from all phone types, the 3 main OS's and has the capability to have private shares amongst multiple people (I've personally got 3 folders shared among 3 different friends individually).... starting at a cost of $0
sugarsync has a pc/mac app, native iphone/blackberry/windows mobile app and starts at $2.49 a month.
So more features, more access points and cheaper - yet you're relying on an article from 6 months ago (even though dropbox launched TODAY) to say that it is better?
You're either affiliated with sugarsync, stupid or both. I'm having trouble deciding which. - zml2008, on 09/11/2008, -1/+8the difference is that dropbox has a free version, with paid storage upgrades, while sugarsync costs money after the trial. it's not free forever
- thenagman, on 09/11/2008, -16/+23Best product on the market for cross platform sync.
- RyGiL, on 09/11/2008, -6/+13Wow Dropbox, you just lost a potential customer by spamming your ass off on Digg. Your product looked promising but as soon as I realized you were just spamming the hell out of Digg, you lost me. Congrats!
- bbliss17, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7How much storage do you get with a free account?
- Remmiz, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7Except for the fact that Dropbox is free unless you wish to upgrade...
- joshuawilde, on 09/11/2008, -1/+7Easy as what? Buying a snowmobile in San Diego?
- zip000, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6Wow, there is a lot of spam on this one.
I'd consider trying the product if there weren't so-o many users raving about it that have only ever dugg this story. - mmockett, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6Dropbox is free.
- StupotAce, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6But...does SugarSync have a native iPhone app? I would really like to know if there is SugarSync iPhone native app.
It seems like it would be cool if there was iPhone app SugarSync native, that's all I'm saying....iSync...native...SugarPhone... - RobotBuddha, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6Good catch. The all important branding by capitalization that the company heads insist employees use, but which no other human ever will. Not as telling as if it was a double cap, but still.
- aakoch, on 09/11/2008, -3/+9Another way to store your files online with some unknown company just waiting to go under and lose all your files. No, thank you!
- kigabit, on 09/11/2008, -4/+10I'm burying this whole damn story because of all the DropBox and SugarSync shills battling it out. Ugh.
- Krumm, on 09/11/2008, -2/+8It seems to throttle back a lot when uploading. If they add a manual control for upload speed that would be great.
I have about 80KBps upload bandwidth, but I've never seen it go over about 30KBps. - frooo, on 09/11/2008, -2/+815 times the "cost"... uh ok, well they have running costs for servers, bandwidth, employee costs and so on, so if you factored all those in, plus their markup it seems quite reasonable.
Besides, a Big Mac costs about 29 cents to make, and what, $2.50 to buy? I dont see you crucifying McDonalds here...
It's called business. - Cylexis, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6So many users that signed up just to digg/comment on this story. I'm reporting dropbox's spam to digg as abuse.
Straight from the help: "If you encounter abuse, please email us at abuse@digg.com. Please be sure to include the URL of the page where you found the bug or abuse occurring and any other pertinent details. " - MacPPC, on 09/11/2008, -1/+7Every file in the public folder has a link attached to it, so you don't need dropbox to see it, you just give everyone the public link to the file.
