- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I use firefox daily I can honestly say that I'm not 100% happy with it either. It's a memory pig. I can watch the memory usage go up and up as I use it. When I close and reopen it the memory drops back down and starts again. So I can't really find a browser I'm really happy with. I might give IE7 a shot when it comes out.
- blockcipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome! I'm going to deploy this through my whole corporate network. I'll report back!!!!
- luke--, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4thanks for posting this...I need to try it out so i know how to fix it when people call me about the problems it causes
- Juke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How to uninstall IE7 Beta
http://www.techenclave.com/forums/uninstall-ie7-beta-your-computer-6196.html - 9eemail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I downloaded this and it hosed my system. I for somereason can't get into system restore either. Don't download this.. It is crap.
Thank goodness for Firefox.... - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^^^ haha spoken like a true IT man...
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So Firefox has approximately 10% market share (and apparently most of that market share uses digg). Why not -hope- that MS can make IE 7 more standards compliant and pleasant to use so our websites can be enjoyed by the other 85% of the browsing world!
- byron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DO NOT INSTALL THIS ON YOUR PRIMARY MACHINE. This is NOT a finished product by any means, and installing it is very likely to produce bad results. There is a reason why this is closed beta - it is only intended for installation on a limited number of testing machines.
Please just wait until Beta 2 comes out to see this - that should be fairly stable. - sixtyten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IE7 Beta 1 is essentially useless for developers trying to see if their site will work in the full version. It's only got a tiny fraction of the planned HTML/CSS standards fixes they have planned.
See: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx
Frankly I'm happy the full version is _likely_ to be an improvement, but I'll only use if for testing layouts for compatibility. The real issue IE7 is likely to have (and it shares this with its older siblings) is the fact its so tightly integrated into Windows itself it's a massive security hole, no matter how much they try and patch exploits.
And yeah, I know all browsers (heck all applications) have potential security issues. It's just IE's far far worse by design.
Anyway, I'd be patient and wait for the full version.... - bigpresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can get it from Microsoft, but only if you have an MSDN sub:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/default.mspx - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, so it's a RAR file which comes with an .NFO of a release group called WinBeta.
No thanks! If I would ever install it then from an official source. - bilange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like you need WinXP _English_ for this beta to install, or otherwise it wont install.
It makes sense, if you think about it! - Hypnos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alright guys lay off the caffeine ok there just browsers. No reason to get all worked up. Either you want to try the beta or you don't. Its just not worth getting all worked up about it. It doesn't matter.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone that said it "Sucks" tell me exactly why they feel that way? What do you not like about IE7?
- Bobbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@9eemail
LOL for you mate. Let me see its beta from an obvious warezy type unofficial source so you went and installed it on your main OS? Nice one! - starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There hasn't been a new IE release for the Mac since 2003. They no longer support it. Unfortunately, there are some sites that have code that will only render on IE. Even my firewall/router, which in the manual and all associated screenshots are in Safari, when I had an issue and called tech support, they said it works better in older browsers (Netscape 4 and IE 5) So strange.
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is 'Beta' not 'Public Preview' there's a ***** reason why you people shouldn't be downloading and installing it. Its the same reason why Vista is in 'Beta' and not 'Public Preview.'
- rdjurovich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The link that "bigpresh" posted (microsoft.com) states: "This release is specifically intended for developers to confirm that existing applications and websites will work well with Internet Explorer 7"
Huh, if they intend to make IE7 work with HTML and CSS [properly], they have a lot of work set out for them. - NyQuil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you spelled it wrong "Internet Explo[d]er 7 Beta 1"
- cheebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Microsoft.
Please dont hurt me! - fritzbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, people will actually download a warez version of a program that has been proven insecure in the past. I bet y'all open anonymous email attachments also.
- Flogin_Molly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0will this screw up my pc no thanks ill
stay with fire fox and keep my ie downgraded - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How exactly can anyone complain that Microsoft copies people in terms of software? They are the first and obviously the best. So STFU.
- klownkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOOOO-HOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
the next version of the WORST browser in the history of computing is released!!
does anyone actually ues IE for anything other than for those pages that are "unsupported" in firefox? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dont forget CAMINO!
- carlinhosg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll pass.
- zanfir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Maxthon. It is built on the IE6 engine, so all of my web pages work. Plus it has tabs and lots of extensions. I tried Firefox, but there are too many web sites that don't work correctly. Especially at work.
- Adelaide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for your comment sixtyten.
At least I won't bother trying to move the buttons around anymore. - NewOrb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Astounding – I have is pity, no argument will reach you. But I a few important reasons why IE will remain the best:
1. It supports click through transparent flash
2. Firefox is build around the rules that IE bent.
3. IE liberated the web from stupid little rules like, max table height and other little silly rules that has absolutely no merit.
4. IE was the only browser that really pushed for CSS, where the others were always a bit reluctant
5. IE security breaches are made public, unlike those in firefox that you need to find in google
6. Opera, Firefox, Netscape and others have all used IE as the benchmark, if you don’t believe me, look at IE5 and FF1, not the graphic layout but the functional layout, with the exception of the all mighty ‘tabbed browsing’ OMG like that’s a big deal, I don’t use tabbed browsing, cuz there’s a shortcut ‘Alt Tab’, try it.
Finally, if developers had their way, everyone would actually still be using good ol Netscape 4. Please try to stop the bashing and support it with SUBJECTIVE facts. - crazy73N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't use IE get firefox and get the ie tab (http://ietab.mozdev.org/) you can use that for opening ie only pages without ever having to open ie!
- SummuM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The links for the following sites does not work :x :x :x
http://www.soft32.com/download_997.html
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Browsers/Internet-Explorer-7.shtml
Internet Explorer 7 description Download: Because this version of Internet Explorer 7 is intended only for developers and registered beta testers, Microsoft has asked us to stop distributing the setup files. Therefore, Internet Explorer 7 is no longer available for download from this page.
However, we will post it here as soon as the beta goes public, so make sure you periodically check back.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A MSDN sub !? !? !?
in order to download successfully download it !?
Thanks - ice2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IE7 is complete ripp off FIRFOX why should u switch to a new browser that is coping all the other Browsers ability
FF having all the IE7 features nearly about a year do not switch to IE7 stick to FIREFOX and take the web back safer faster - NewOrb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Dracos:
Box model is not broken, althought ppl like to say it is, the workaround is hardly something to talk about. As far as MIME, DOM and CSS goes, I have no idea where it's coming from, since I've NEVER had a problem with it. Maybe there are issues that I have not yet had an application for, but I can list the same and more issues with every browser none more so than Firefox. To my knowledge namespace has been supported since IE4. PNG support from people who dont want to run activeX seems a bit strange. It's like not having a DVD rom because you can load illegal software and get a virus. Ditto to the rest, but thank you at least for keeping it constructive. - TDavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Added 9/10/2002? Me thinks there is an error there. IE7 wasn't available three years ago.
- mu-sly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@thenik: Thanks for your inspiring and informed thoughts (2 comments above). We'll consider ourselves officially told, and refrain from any Microsoft bashing in future. Once again, thanks so much for chosing to spend your precious time on us - I don't know what we'd do without people like you around to just tell it to us straight.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Dracos
Thank you for your input. I have not had any trouble with the beta. I check all my code against firefox, IE6, IE7 and opera. All 4 browsers display my pages fine and all my pages validate XHTML 1.0 Strict.
I thank you for discussing this rationally and not just a blanket "it sucks" statement. - gameraboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone make a local copy of this yet? See http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/ie7.html for instructions.
- terminalfreeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll stick with Firefox
FFFAL - micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'll pass.
Firefox or Google's firefox based browser. - JeffS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When Phoenix first started it was supposed to be a small and lightweight browser without all the fluff. That is what attracted me to it and the .04 release lived up to that. Now that Firefox is in its 1.x phase it is quickly becoming the bloatware that the original team had tried to get away from. I find myself using it less and less, using Opera more. I am actually looking forward to IE7.
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@lynn:
Here are any developer's reasons:
- Broken box model
- Broken float model
- Incomplete DOM support
- Incomplete CSS support
- Poor mime type support
- No namespace support
- Script debugging is a pain in the arse
- Poor alpha png support (even in IE7 beta)
- ActiveX
- Operating system integration
- Insecure architecture
Anyone care to add to this list? - n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm tired of company's trying to get in my damn computer!
GO Goggle! coming soon...To a computer near you at least we have degrees!
You ever look at whats talking out of your machine?"
do you have a clue what you just said??! L O L - chrome0011, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Boy, it must be nice to be this Firefox guy. He gets his wee-wee licked all the time. Am I the only one who has never had a problem with IE? It seems to do what it is supposed to... you know, browse the internet... of course its popularity-contest-winning features are not so great... oh wait. They are. IT IS STILL THE MOST WIDELY USED BROWSER IN THE EFFING WORLD!!! GET OVER IT AND LET THEM IMPROVE IT!!! damn.
- DaviDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I haven't tryed IE7 but I'll bet it doesn't respect web standards, and will be just as insecure as the previous versions... with Tabb's.
I feel compelled to tell everyone how awesome Firefox is and how much "IE sux" because it's the truth, and the 90% share is a good reason to spread the truth.
I don't understand why people complain about firefox's rendering speed, just an hour ago I used IE in another computer, and I actually had to stare at a blank screen and check the activity indicator.
Mind boggling. - tecaddict90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I downloaded this about a month ago when the same article was posted on digg and i represent it, IE7 is a total rip of Firefox, a very crappy if say so. The only good thing i that it is now CSS2 compliant but that should have happened a long time ago. and why can't i get my file bar at the top?!
- sixtyten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can't have the file bar at the top because each "tab" is actually a complete instance of IE (basically a new window) and they're bodging the existing IE engine to do tabbing instead of properly rewriting it to work in a sensible way.
It's pretty poor UI really. - WillyWonka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Theres nothing much new in IE7. It's just IE6 with working PNG's and the Firefox interface (But bastardized). It still can't render html/css properly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Running it, this should be interesting
- poopstewart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0EVERYONE; this is an unofficial release. It's still very flaky and is missing many of the features that will be in the final RC. Only d/l IE7 from Microsoft once it goes official public beta.
- olorinpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got a copy of it legitly... tested it... and promptly uninstalled it. Its a buggy rip of what firefox has had for quite a while. Not that firefox is perfect, but it works a whole lot better and has a cleaner feel to it.
