- maverick808, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Digg V3 really is a step back in user-friendliness compared to 2. Real shame we need stuff like this at all. Good work though :)
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20For Opera 9 users, you dont need an ANY extension to do this.
Just right click on the page and choose "Edit Site Preferences". Under Display tab, choose a local CSS file.
Here's the one I use (got from a comment from Digg V3.5):
Copy and save it as a CSS file:
/* START OF CSS DIGG V3.5 */
#comments_ad, #item_ad, #top_ad, .comments_ad_image, .top_ad_image {
display: none !important;
}
#enclosure1, .comment-tray, ol {
width: 710px !important;
}
/* make comments wider */
.comment {
width: 710px !important;
}
.c-body-inside {
padding-right: 5px !important;
}
/* moves sidebar */
#contents,
#sidebar {
float: left !important;
border: none !important;
background: none !important;
}
#container {
background: none !important;
}
#sidebar {
padding: 20px 0 1em 35px !important;
background-position: 0 0;
}
#footer {
background: none !important;
}
/* END OF CSS DIGG V3.5 */ - dbxz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12 i think digg probably gets 2% of viewers at 800x600. Why should the other 98% of us suffer...
digg im so dissapointed with this layout. It seems to me the intention was to increase the click through rate on the ads with this layout.
Its so much less user friendly...
digg listen to your users! Please change it back or allow an option for us to choose the layout. - startleman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why are people modding down the Opera post??? The poster is correct, and the .css file he provides works as advertised. Firefox Fanboys are only hurting their cause by trying to suppress good news about Opera. I thought the love for open source was about choice. ppffft. hypocrites.
p.s. modding me down will ony confirm my opinion. - synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Sir, I hereby award you with one (1) internet, redeemable at your local retail outlet, offer void in Canada.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12How about digg just fixes this bunk layout? What's with the narrow fixed width? Some of us actually have monitors larger than 15" as suprising as that may be. Digg's core audience isn't Joe and Jill *****.
- Venar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Nicely Done, you would think Digg would let you set this as an option or something...
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great idea for the digg crew. Put a choice in the prefs in our profiles for left or right side menus.
- FunkyJunk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Thank you very much! Greasemonkey is soo much easier.
- bjowoods, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The only reason you guys like the menu on the right is because you were used to it. If Digg originally had it on the left and V3 moved it to the right, you would all be like "WTF? I want the menu back on the left!!"
- rosschilen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Slashdot's layout is almost better than digg v3
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's amazing how ugly the new version of digg is. How many front page stories deal with simply making digg 3.0 less ugg?
- dako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@startleman & gookie
You can also do that in Firefox without an extension (and that's probably why people were modding you down, even though it was a valid comment)
Just add this to your UserContent.css
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain(digg.com) {
/* fix comments */
#comments_ad, #item_ad, #top_ad, .comments_ad_image, .top_ad_image {
display: none !important;
}
#enclosure1, .comment-tray, ol {
width: 710px !important;
}
/* make comments wider */
.comment {
width: 710px !important;
}
.c-body-inside {
padding-right: 5px !important;
}
/* moves sidebar */
#contents,
#sidebar {
float: left !important;
border: none !important;
background: none !important;
}
#container {
background: none !important;
}
#sidebar {
padding: 20px 0 1em 35px !important;
background-position: 0 0;
}
#footer {
background: none !important;
}
} - looneyboy784, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i meant to post something to that effect as well. I totaly agree. The reason the new digg sucks so much is not the location of the navigation bar but the static width of the comments section.
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree. Only the technically "elite" do things like this. Remember that 90% of the world uses IE as their browser, and hence do not have the ability to do anything like this. (at the browser level anyway)
- sykotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Boo removing ads. Why can't digg get money for advertising like over half the sites dugg do!
cool CSS tricks though. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh great we have somne dumb kid with multiple accounts marking everyone down.
Anyway the reason the right hand menu is more natural is because most people use the mouse with their right hands - which means that they have to track accross the screen to get to the menu on the left, which takes longer and seems more akwards and unnatural.
Maybe most of the digg developers are left handed? - d4rkn1ght, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What gookie posted works on iCab too!
- mikepx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anybody tell me how to do this in CAMINO?! I did it at work with FireFox and loved how it looked but I use Camino at home. I was reading that I can maybe do it using CamiTools Style Tab but so far no luck.
- zeabrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Eamonn, maybe if Digg went back to a style where users once again liked the site we use so much it would pay for itself again. We had no complaints with ads on the site befire they decided to blow them up x500 and shove them in our faces.
- gettarat, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1great work and another example of how useful greasemonkey is!
http://applebeesmenu.org/ - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You know there really is a bug. I just posted the above comment 30 seconds ago - and now I can't edit it - because the digg system is saying I posted it 6 minutes ago.
That's not right at all.
No wonder people are compaining that they have such a short time (or in my case zero time) to edit their posts. - loveme4iamjesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Paragraphs dude.
- Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -3/+4tanks, but I prefer .css because its a bit faster.
Just instal PithHelmet ( http://culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php ), make a new rule editor, Matching pattern [digg.com] (domain match), style > costum style sheet. Make a new one and put this in it:
div[id="top_ad"], div[class="banner_ad_unit"], div[id="item_ad"], div[class="single_ad_unit"], div[class="tower_ad_unit"], div[class="top_ad_image"], div[class="comments_ad_image"], div[id="search_ad"], div[class="stacked_ad_unit"] { display: none !important; }
a { text-decoration: none !important; }
h3 a { border: none !important; background: none !important; }
div[id="contents"], div[id="sidebar"] { float: left !important; border: none !important; background: none !important;}
div[id="container"] { background: none !important; }
div[id="sidebar" { padding: 20px 0 1em 35px !important;background-position: 0 0; }
div[id="footer"] { background: none !important; }
img[src$="/img/tshirt.gif"] { display: none !important; }
.comment { width: 715px !important; }
gone ads, sidebar on the right, and comments use full space. ow jah, and that t-shirt is gone :p) - terinjokes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5the css gookie posted also works in Safari
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nicely done. :) I like the sidebar on the side. I dont mind the ads tho
- EamonnMurphy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you remove the ads, how do you expect the site you like and use so much to pay for its self? Would you be happy if it made no revenue from people blocking the adverts that it had to shut down because the hosting bill was too much ? I also like the new version, the only thing I would change is to add a bit of work on the kearning of the headings by spacing the letters out more to make them easy to read like they were in the previous version.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This version is undoubtedly, the one script to rule them all!
- RyomaNagare, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Great Script, Works flawlessly on Opera too just load the file in User JS on site preferences :-P
- ankyhbk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3cheers. works fantastic. well done.
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Thanks everyone who has been tweakin this for us! I love my new layout with small fonts and the menu on the right.
I really hope this massive unfavorable response to the "new" design on digg will encourage Kevin and the gang to give us multiple view options. - lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4great work and another example of how useful greasemonkey is!
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Wow I was just thinking that before I visited dgg. What i like about digg are all of the same things I liked about it before. What I don't like is why the menu has been inexplicably moved to the right (I guess in an attempt just to look a bit different). This is OK if you are left handed, but if you are right handed like most of us, it seems a bit awkward. Also while I understand the need to raise advertising revenue, I don't like the new much larger ads (I'm half expecting to see pop ups introduced next) and I don't like how the amount of time we have been given to edit our posts appears to have been reduced. I never understood the reasoning behind why we had such a short time to edit our posts to begin with - and I have often had cause to regret having not had just that little bit more time to edit my post and correct an embarrassing spelling mistake or grammatical error, and if anything it should have been extended rather than reduced. I don't like too that even though we were told that the categories would be clearly delineated and that the front page focus would remain on technology, we have already seen some very non technology based stories promoted to the front page. In this regard I think it is important that the digg team remember that it is the tech community that gave digg the reputation and the influence that it has.
Other than that, it's all good. - xopherg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Humans read better in narrow columns.
- lowededwookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To be honest I think toolbars on the left are counter-productive.
I'm a right hander and tend to be visually drawn to the righthand side of the screen before the left. I get annoyed with apps that have links and buttons etc on the left because it means I have to move my eyes further away from where I'm working. - poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3the complete page takes three times longer to load now. [uninstalls script]
nice try tho. - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The front page of digg looks great with this script, but when viewing a story it looks a bit funky because of the extra whitespace between the sidebar and the story/comments. I modified the script to change the width of the "main" column that contains the story and comments, so they're much wider now - which is good because man they were way too narrow. It also gets rid of the extra whitespace at the top of stories where the ad used to be.
Script available here: http://roxorweb.com/greasemonkey/digg3.user.js - Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -5/+4You can only edit for 60seconds now.
add this to your userContent.css and all the ads will be gone.
div[id="top_ad"], div[class="banner_ad_unit"], div[id="item_ad"], div[class="single_ad_unit"], div[class="tower_ad_unit"], div[class="top_ad_image"], div[class="comments_ad_image"], div[id="search_ad"], div[class="stacked_ad_unit"] { display: none !important; } - Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -3/+2pitty it doesn't work with creammonkey for Safari.
But it can be don with the costum .css applied in PithHelmet. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -4/+3This is especially true for widescreen users. Really, I have so much white-space it's shocking! Nearly half at least.
http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=digginws4tg.png
I miss the wider comment block. - l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Creammonkey users: replace innerHTML with innerText and it works :)
- Aamir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The menu has been moved to the left, instead of right :P
I agree with you on the ads :@ - djmallon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3many thanks, works great.
- FrozenOrb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Greasemonkey 0.6.4 doesn't work with Bon Echo Alpha 2.
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It looks a lot better.
Thanks for the script. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well sorry I just woke up....
- kinkydan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah thanks very much for your work - so much better than editing css files
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yes. I wouldn't mind a V3.1 already with a few more options (but going by the big box at the bottom of every screen, they are going for the really really really wide general audience with this site, so menu being left side just goes with that notion).
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Works great, thanks!
- tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Ah, much better. Thanks!
