- alantocheri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69I'd love to have the ability to search only stories I've dugg back. I miss that feature a lot :(
- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+60oops - got cut off on my comment:
Anyhow, we many more features coming to search, including profile search. It takes time to scale - but we are on it. - kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47Thanks for all your feedback. We have quite a bit more coming to search..
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Thanks for noticing!
- sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32I hate how it doesn't default to "front page only" results.
There are hundreds of stories added on digg every day, if you are searching for a story it is MUCH more likely you saw it on the front page... - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I still can't search my previously dugg stories.
Why would digg remove this in the first place, wasn't it supposed to be put back after the [latest] major update? - sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17http://www.google.com/coop/profile?user=017771777217723414381
Like that you mean? :p - 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17it still sucks, wish google would pay to implement their searches.
- seanieb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Please we need search my own Diggs!!
- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Well, I didn't notice the extra boolean search features, I just noticed that it was MUCH faster. I used to get timeout errors half the time when I would search for something; it was easier just to use Google with "digg.com" in the search terms. Google indexes Digg pretty well anyways - I saw a picture of DIA covered with snow on Digg a few months ago after a big storm in Denver, and I wanted to find the pic again - I searched Google for "denver international airport storm", and the Digg story was within the first five results.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Is there any means to search what I've dugg before? I haven't found such an option so there should be one if there isnt'.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+111389, I don't think anyone is with you on those suggestions.
- mejason69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8used to have it but they took it out a while back... I don't know why the hell they did that!
- misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Digg's Google Co-op doesn't always work for me. There are clearly times I should get Digg links at the top of my search, but don't. Like this search for net neutrality: http://www.google.com/coop/subscribedlinks/search?cx=004927883757906227721%3Acozgb_crpvq&q=net+neutrality&sa=Search+Directory&cof=FORID%3A9#263
- canuck21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i wish it showed how many hits each story got, so you could compare the diggs vs hits ratio
- mejason69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Whats a pain in the ass for me is when i want to search thru my own dugg stuff!!! There is no longer a search for that! So I have to go and check every page!! Real Pain in the ass!!
- Krusz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Two things:
1. http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_removes_key_feature_Please_digg_to_show_you_want_it_back - I submitted this 76 DAYS ago. Yep, 76 days after Kevin told us the user profile search was coming back and it is still missing in action. If you look at my digging history, you'll notice a pretty good drop off in my digging since that feature was removed. Please, let digg know that we still want that feature back.
2. Even if the search has improved, there are still so many things that could be better. However, besides being able to write better queries, the default search option needs to be changed. When is the last time you searched from the main page and got what you wanted? Probably never! This is because the default search that digg uses from the front page defaults to what is, by far, the most crippled and worthless search you can perform, because the only information it gives you is information that you'll get other places faster. It defaults to stories in the past 7 days and sorts them by newest. Sorry to break it to ya Kevin, but if I want to see the most recent stories, I am going to look at the upcoming stories section. The simple fact is that in 99% of situations, people do not want to search the past 7 days, and -especially- not by newest. Most people want to search at least a year back by now, and by most diggs. The simple truth is that most people search for stories that have been popular enough to get a lot of diggs, so sorting by "most diggs" obviously makes the most sense.
In summation, the searching feature in Digg is by far the most crippled and underdeveloped area. Let's put silly things like bigdigg and digg stack (whatever the poop those eye-candy features are called) on hold and work on the core features of Digg, what is especially a large database. Would you ever want to work with a database that you could not query certain parts of, and the parts you could query only had the most basic options for searching?
Yeah, I didn't think so. - tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i know, why did that feature get taken out?
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now if only they would make the RSS search actually work again, that would be good.
- Samstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4viola?
- kefs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2agreed.. you have the data.. let us have at it..
- Sumyunguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ummm...you can look at your profile. all the stories you have dugg, submmitted and commented on are in there. No search though.
You could also use my handy dandy Digg profile RSS collection to view your profile. Just edit as instructed and import into your firefox Bookmarks or bookmarks toolbar. http://www.digg.com/software/YourDuggStories_LIVE_RSS_bookmarks_for_FF_Your_DIGG_profile_via_RSS
Also an RSS feed collection for ALL stories http://www.digg.com/software/See_ALL_DIGG_frontpage_upcoming_stories_directly_in_FF_Toolbar
No need to go to the website at all, just click on the stories you want to read. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sparks2,
What you said about the front page applies only to those not in the habit of checking the upcoming stories queue.
Ironically, some of the folks who lament that good stories aren't getting enough diggs, also seldom think to look at the upcoming stories queue. That's probably because they don't really understand how Digg display options work.
The upcoming stories display can be tailored to your liking. You can select an option to switch between cloud view and story view. You can select a tab for the category or sub-category of stories you want to see. You can change what appears on the first page of the upcoming stories queue by selecting the sort order option from the pull-down menu (to sort by newest stories, most popular stories, etc.).
You can also find new stories that interest you by displaying stories that your friends have submitted, dugg, or commented on. - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hm.. what?
- neeyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget the back-up search option:
Go to google.com
Search string "stuff I'm looking for on digg site:digg.com"
Works surprisingly well and was a nice option to use if the digg search was being hammered and took 2 minutes to give results. - mejason69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no clue... i used to use it a lot!!! My guess is they save on the server side by taking it out....
- fume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now when i use the search for the first time it works. I'm not getting "feature busy..." or something to that affect.
- CharlesMay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I've been trying to find this video I saw where from a command line the user was able to log on as System and I have never had it come up in a search. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
- dignon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice if searching worked at all in the Podcast area. Its completely useless the way it is (at least for me). For example, search for "myzoo"... no results... then click the "episodes" tab, and it shows up. I've tried several other podcasts with the same results, but some apparently do work.
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Podcast search is still broken. I can't even get a result by searching for "Diggnation. I sent an e-mail to let them about this around 3 weeks ago and never got a response.
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That link has nothing to do with this article...
- Smegzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm still a relative digg newbie but I find that unless I digg something, its very hard to find it again unless my memory of it is very good. Vague recollections get me nowhere.
I would also like to be able to search or just see a list of digg postings that I have commented in. Maybe I'm just thick but I haven't seen any way to revisit comments other than digging the stories. I don't always want to digg stories that I add a comment to. - trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want ranking back!
The activity, quality and speed of submitting and diggin has dropped big time since the "Top Users"-part was removed.
Apparently diggers only wants fame and not the good of the community. - expert01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try clicking on your name at the top of the screen.
- Sc0rian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i cant wait till i can search my dugg stories...
- Ythan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously I don't know the details of digg's setup, but http://www.sphinxsearch.com/ might be worth a look. It's a GPL fulltext search engine which integrates with mySQL and PHP. It offers lightning fast searches, any/all/boolean/phrase support, filtering and grouping on attributes, and advanced features like stemming, phrase proximity ranking, and field weighting. It's much faster than mySQL's built-in fulltext search and provides much better relevance and scalability. I've deployed it on my site, and even though it's much smaller than digg I couldn't be happier with the results.

http://jayant7k.blogspot.com/2006/06/benchmarking-results-of-mysql-lucene.html - willin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What problem are you having with it specifically?
- Litespeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's closer to "voila" than "wallah" which I have had the misfortune of seeing on more than one occasion.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I buried this story for the sole reason that using "viola" instead of "voilà" sounds stupid. Really stupid.
- GlasgowJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg could do with a few new sections including travel news!
- IntellEJent, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6"I had seen but couldn ’t remember when, and viola"
With all due respect, I assume you mean "voila". See http://wsu.edu/~brians/errors/voila.html for more details. - fatadamblog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Digg Search Improved, to bad your website isn't
- gameforge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I would like them to add a search feature specifically for the picture section.
And I don't have any ulterior motives at all for requesting this "search" feature. (I was actually lying just there) - zpchrish, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5thanks kevin. all I was really trying to say in this post is I saw that search was working better and to say thanks to the engineers working on it.
- fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Digg doesn't even need to do this... a third party site could offer this easily.
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Here's a cake. You can eat it too...
- ShuttleDisaster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2we already have it. it's called google.
site:digg.com - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Bury, replied to wrong comment. Sorry.
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2duplicate. Digg down
- nasium, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Digg should just partner with google and use something along the lines of google co-op. http://www.google.com/coop/
