- THE4IRON, on 11/26/2007, -38/+554I get so tired of the Mac vs. PC debate...
- stormgren, on 11/26/2007, -72/+286Summary: Windows 2000 kicked OS 9's ass, OS X kicked Windows everything's ass, Vista is glossy plastic and Leopard finally seems like a mature OS.
- SPThom, on 11/26/2007, -6/+172Yeah, who would've thought Windows '95 was released back in the mid '90s, eh?
- dynacrylic, on 11/26/2007, -12/+162Pictures are pretty to look at but where are the features/specs the desktops offered at that time?
- NJPENSO, on 11/26/2007, -10/+141Fanboy attack imminent.
- MagicCake, on 11/26/2007, -10/+140There was no debate, it was just a visual comparison of desktops...
- potterboy, on 11/26/2007, -6/+105ME vs OSX beta. A hidden message?
- kernco, on 11/26/2007, -3/+89How did they get a screenshot of Windows ME before it crashed?
- kriminalintent, on 11/26/2007, -1/+85it looks like the next os will be fully transparent.
- capiCrimm, on 11/26/2007, -52/+129can we see KDE and Gnome in one of these sometime?
- pathy, on 11/26/2007, -4/+62As it stands now, I don't think either Windows or OS X look bad at all.
One thing I will say is that using Vista now, I no longer use my desktop as a dumping ground for random files and shortcuts as I did on XP. I have a gadget with several of my most used apps inside of it (Although I could easily move these to the task bar.), then I have the Games Window for my games, and the updated explorer makes everything a lot easier to manage around the system for me. So the look is a lot 'cleaner' than I had on previous iterations of Windows. - Tiggums, on 11/26/2007, -8/+53while we're at it, we can start downgrading everything else... I don't like painted houses... let's either leave it as wood/brick/or white. All of the interior can be white and gray. Our clothes too! While we're at it, our cars... lose all that crap all we need is the basics, no radio, screw that... it's just there for our enjoyment.. leather interior?! Not needed, screw that too, hell no covers... just leave the foam padding! Yeah we don't need anything to be fancy looking that's all crap. Who needs things to look nice, that's ridiculous and inefficient..
- keef06, on 11/26/2007, -4/+49No Windows 1.0? Oh wait that was practically a file manager for MS-DOS...
- Amazetbm, on 11/26/2007, -4/+45A lot of people remember Windows 3.11. It's just that a lot of us don't want to remember.
- tictac888, on 11/26/2007, -2/+41Here's a look at some of the early **cough** 'eye candy'
http://www.infosatellite.com/news/2001/10/a251001w ... - TomFrost, on 11/26/2007, -6/+43You're missing an apostrophe. And an 'e'.
- Doghound, on 11/26/2007, -2/+39Honestly, did you read the comment? "it can't even move files across". He said _move_, not _find_.
- VictoryCube, on 11/26/2007, -2/+39they're both pretty
- bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -1/+36He can borrow one of tgunner's apostrophes, he's got two too many...
- MicrosoftBob, on 11/26/2007, -0/+34Thanks!
- roebeet, on 11/26/2007, -11/+44rrrrrrr those commericals are getting to you. MacOS vs Windows, not PC. PC is hardware (which MacOS can run on, with a little help, and vice versa for XP / Vista).
- SirZRX, on 11/26/2007, -38/+69oh right a mature OS, and it cant even move files across partitions
- kenadak, on 11/26/2007, -5/+33memory management of large lists of data
comprehensive drag and drop between Applications
more powerful root/user controls/ shell integration
a standard set of Keyboard shortcuts
a more powerful shell integrated search
better visualization of common parameters (disk space usage, sort by, scroll bars/window content)
sleep and power management/laptop support
(I'm a gnome/xfce user... KDE might have some of these but I'm pretty sure it's not perfect) - NovaPrime9, on 11/26/2007, -1/+29I'm going to ask the obvious question here: you do know the dock can be resized, right? And positioned to the side if you prefer?
I'm not a Mac fanboy, but talking about the real estate eaten by the dock is pretty silly. - P373Y, on 11/26/2007, -11/+38then dont look at the stories
- Tyr7BE, on 11/26/2007, -14/+40Kinda cool to see their evolution. Would be neat to throw in a Linux desktop like Gnome or KDE as well just for comparison.
- qqzhenyi, on 11/26/2007, -1/+27You guys want to try Mac OS 7? (in flash!)
http://myoldmac.net/webse-e-flash.htm - gwhardyiv, on 11/26/2007, -0/+26I like the fact that nobody's really taking the bait here.
- LeeSoong, on 11/26/2007, -5/+31BSODs ?
- edwartica, on 11/26/2007, -1/+22They're still giving updates. Its supposed to be supported through I believe the end of the year. I know this because almost every computer where I work uses 2000.
- zwaldowski, on 11/26/2007, -0/+21No, Windows 2000 was still a consumer operating system. There was a server edition. Was it consumer-oriented? No.
- vladimirptn, on 11/26/2007, -4/+24Buried as inaccurate, everyone knows ME wasn't stable enough to stay on long enough for a print screen.
- cliffhanger407, on 11/26/2007, -0/+20Just because everyone says it wrong does not make it right. People consistently use the word "ironic" incorrectly, but that does not mean that its definition has changed to "coincidental".
- hammerpants, on 11/26/2007, -0/+20Went straight to tetris. The rest of my day is toast.
- BossKey, on 11/26/2007, -0/+19That bug is FIXED in 10.5.1.
Check the release notes. - feshmania, on 11/26/2007, -1/+19that's a myth perpetuated by elementary school teachers to try to curb the use of conjunctions at the beginning of sentences...there is nothing strictly improper about.
- SOS84, on 11/26/2007, -7/+25Once upon a time I was a mac user and switched to Windows during the OS8/9 era. Windows 98 second edition was far superior to OS8 and 9 and neither could hold a candle to Windows 2000, which in my mind is the best OS I have seen, period. My wife is a mac user but I have largely stuck with Windows since the switch although I am not stuck with it by default due to what I do for a living.. As a whole, since teh advent of OS10, I think they are quite even. There is no real advantage either way.
- jcims, on 11/26/2007, -4/+22>Windows 2000 - Still the best Windows Microsoft ever made.
I've been saying that for, well, almost eight years now...if it was still supported i would still run it. - mark_in_bc, on 11/26/2007, -3/+20I loved windows 3.11. I started a local newspaper with it running Aldus (pre Adobe) PageMaker and an HP laser jet 4 printer. From the printer we had to cut up the copy and pasted it with wax to cardboard flats. The business evolved into a successful publishing company that I sold which allowed me to be semi retired by age 40. We never used apple computers as we found that the PC where cheaper and more upgradeable. However, I must confess that although Windows was very good to us we now have more Mac's in the house than PC's.
- cawpin, on 11/26/2007, -0/+16How about you just hide it? Why do you people leave the damned thing in the way?
- MaxPayne3476, on 11/26/2007, -5/+21This is true too. At least OSX's eye candy is slightly subtle, minus the dock. Transparency only looks good for so long.
- bigsteve, on 11/26/2007, -0/+14He did speak for himself, which is apparently so new and refreshing on digg that people overlook it when it's actually done. He used the words "I [don't] think."
- andycr512, on 11/26/2007, -7/+21What does it lack? Any specific issues?
- KingGorilla, on 11/26/2007, -2/+16i was tired of all the greys and blues
- vade79, on 11/26/2007, -2/+16I hate to burst your bubble, but if you want to go back in time about 10 years you will see X and some window managers had the edge on both microsoft/apple... transparencies/etc configurable handling/etc were on there first. I would venture to say that most things have been pioneered on X
- doshindude, on 11/26/2007, -15/+28For years, the PC has been synonymous with Windows, therefore PC=Windows.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -11/+24your missing a verb......
- lowerlogic, on 11/26/2007, -0/+13how ironic would it be if "ironic" turned into a word that just meant "weird"?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/26/2007, -1/+14Or in the case of Windows ME, do neither.
- TennisElbow, on 11/26/2007, -0/+12Microsoft doesn't make Windows work with hardware. Hardware vendors write drivers to make their hardware work with Windows. Get that straight.
