- ishiputnam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Hi folks, I'm one of the democracy developers. Sorry for the miscommunication, 0.8.2 was built for Breazy, since that was the stable Ubuntu at the time. We built the 0.8.4 packages for Dapper Drake. However, the download page hasn't been updated to reflect that quite yet. It should be up soon, I'm guessing the next few hours.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Fascism player is way cooler
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10But when will the damn thing be a Universal Binary?
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10So, when will adult/legal Democracy be ready? [grin]
- appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"The developers would also like me to note that we finished exactly 420 'tickets' (bug reports, features, etc) for this release."
Democracy Player ftw! - datagod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Broadcast Machine is a WAY cool way to host Bittorrent files...double plus digg.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4fireant is 10x better, but democracy is 10x more web 1.9a
neither of them are better solutions than itunes, tv tonic (if you use windows media center), or your favorite rss reader (if it supports audio/video playback. mac users try newsfire it's ace).
this program is really comprable to I/ON (http://openvision.tv/home/ion_tour/) in terms of development, but in completely different ways. I/ON's way more functionable, whereas the democracy player obviously thought of form over function. i look forward to seeing where the participatory culture foundation takes democracy, but right now i consider it unusable. - phro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone care to say how this compares to FireAnt (http://fireant.tv) ?
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The ubuntu download is for Breezy... They need to release a Dapper version ASAP.
- cryonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i had both at one point a while ago, the early version of Democracy was less stable compared to the version of fireant that was out at that time. but democracy has lots more potental that fireant in my eyes. but i honistly didnt like either, and uninstalled both a few weeks later. but im willing to give D another try.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is more oriented at finding and downloading videos (RSS + Torrents), while VLC is for playing videos you've already downloaded.
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Saying 'there's nothing on it' is missing the point I think. Democracy is just a client, it comes pre-loaded with a few RSS feeds ('channels', if you will) but you're free to add your own from where ever you find them.
- ravrore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6awesome.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Whoah! You see that? Hog at 11 o'clock!
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting point goodshape, I'll check into that a little bit more. Thanks!
- kill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Democracy allows for basic video playback. But its main purpose is not to play video to mange internet video via RSS feeds. It's basically an RSS reader for video. It will manage video feeds, download the newest episodes, even delete them after a set period of time. It also gives you a TV guide like interface to find and subscribe to new feeds. It also has support to download files using bittorrent so you can use it with site like tvtorrents.
- Gunblade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have been using Democracy since it's release on my laptop and Dekstop PC (winxp pro) and it has been great and the stable version is nice.
I just wish browsing was easier, and when you subscribe to a feed it will begin download right then or right click download. The defaults are annoying when you first install it. I really enjoy democracy much better than itunes for getting my videocasts like Adultswim.com's
Now we need songbird to release more versions - coyotejones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While there really isn't any commercial content on it, that's not what they are going for. They are trying to help independent internet-TV spring up: TV by the people, for the people. Between RocketBoom, Frederator and diggnation that's already some pretty good content to make it a useful app for me.
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good news, everyone. I've found the .deb versions.
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/democracy/linux/ubuntu/
Edit: I'm getting an error trying to install:
"Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: democracyplayer-data"
Oh well. - bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2give it time. more content for this, or similar applications, is the presumable progression of the technology.
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will it name downloads with actual names and episode #'s? I had this running awhile back and it was pretty cool - except for that. Made it really hard to stream downloads on my xbox, because I didn't know if I really wanted to watch show 23gh78si0-s988i.avi or 8474df09ss0f989.avi...
- d3designs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't wait until this program hits v1.0
It could very well be the thing that brings IPTV to a much larger market. - pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I followed the instructions for Debian Sid at the bottom of the thread to get it to install in Kubuntu. http://forum.getdemocracy.com/viewtopic.php?pid=1023
It still complained about dependencies but at least it runs. - sirnicholai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Would someone be able to elaborate on what features this has the VLC doesn't?
Because it looks cool, but I don't want to bother switching if it's pretty much the same. - bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I prefer Communism: The Media Player
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I tried it out yesterday, Democracy is a nice player with only one small issue as far as I am concerned. There is a whole lot of nothing to watch on it. No CNN, ESPN or anything of that sort. What it did play it played it very well, just too bad the content was lacking. Heck, I'd love it if it had replays of old MST3K shows, but to no avail.
- chickenrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1do you know if a suse/kde version is on it's way? When?
- Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*sigh* Never mind. They're up now.
That's what I get for trying to play hero. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else getting a false libpango1.0-0 dependency problem when trying to install version 8.4.1-1 on dapper??? By false, I mean that libpango1.0-0 is installed so there should be not problem.
- Ephraim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't suppose you happen to have Adult Swim's RSS feed handy? The search in Democracy isn't finding it, and a quick check through adultswim.com hasn't helped me discover it.
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah songbird is gonna be awsome once it's stable
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1grab the source package - it works fine - just google 'Dapper democracy player'
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this kind of sentiment is exactly why the participatory culture is full of *****, and exactly why the democracy player is about form over function.
***** democracy. there are plenty of rss aggregators available that don't shove this "internet tv revolution" ***** down my throat and are actually usable/maintainable.
bottom line: these people are just a bunch of tacky liberals. please, if someone publishes another videocast with them CRYING about net neutrality (for literal representation see 4 eyed monster's "special message") ill die. we already have an internet culture, stop trying to provide us one using "false patriotism",. god
stop trying to make the internet political, it should be about FINE ART - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the heads up. ;)
- EdHaber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If i stop playing a movie does it remember my position yet?
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, this a very cool. great look and feel, more content than i expected.
- raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Democracy uses VLC for video rendering.
It's just more extended for, say, vlogs. - faultybydesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks, love this app.
- Sabot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No but I get this error when I try to run the player in ubuntu 6.06.
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: JavaPluginFactory5 init - no agent? - DanGeech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://tvrss.net/ is great to pick up rss feeds.
Unfortunately, Mininova and a bunch of it's analogues' rss feeds aren't compatible with this great Democracy Player.
But this site is great and the new Democracy Player seems 10x more stable than it's previous release.
Thanks Textdog. - ChrisSoutham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's not really IPTV, it's a video podcast manager at best.
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a libc dependency error, but i fixed it by modifying the control file in the deb
- meatypuffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else seeing only a grey/blank screen when watching a video? I've had his problem ever since I installed .8.4 when it first came out. I moved my download folder to a different partition within the options, but I wouldn't think that would have much to do with it. Even when I try to load the files directly into VLC outside of Democracy, I still get the same grey screen. The audio works fine in and out of Democracy, just no video playback. I've reinstalled VLC, and upgraded to .8.4.1 of Democracy, but I still have the same problem. Anyone else in the same boat or have any suggestions?
- UrbenLegend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This program really needs portable player support, especially for the ipod. It would be even cooler if it could somehow use VLC to convert all downloaded iptv episodes into mp4 format so it could be played on the video ipod or any other portable player
- jorgevargas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is a 0.8.4.1 with some bug fixes, in fact the official 0.8.4 release is 0.8.4.1 you should get that one
- pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Suse????
- jorgevargas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for gentoo users
sorry for tagging later but
I needed to check it for myself my ebuild has been upgraded by Louis
In fact the gentoo ebuild was ready before the official releases, hehehe although we had to upgrade to 0.8.4.1 since they apply some patches from the weekend, have fun.
ohhh I almost forgot you can find the overlay at
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131527
please reply with a "works for me" so we can finally add demo-player to the main package index.
by the way in case you don't know how to use an overlay

peace - OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It said 'which optional components would you like to install' not 'would you like to associate the following file types with Democracy'. Its a great application, just taking a bad tack in misleading people into associating file types with it.
- Hypermarkalan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1It wouldn't be so bad if you could change the damn things back. It changed registry keys and now I can change the "file type" back.
- Sabot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I found the solution to my problem. You have to have Java 5 installed on your machine. Here is a link.
