The amount of themes and widgets alone is worth setting up a blog on your own hosting. I also like that you can mix and match the themes so that you get exactly what you want. Over at http://tolemac.net/blog I'm using the Get-Some theme, but I changed out the body jpg and I love it.
As far as wordpress, either .com or self hosted, pushing Blogger to the curb, I don't see that happening. There are plenty of people who just want the basic blog setup and Blogger provides that with little to no maintainance. - phishyJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahem, please dont mention DMB here...

The only advantage is that Blogger offers free hosting and free ad placement, but if you are buying your own host and domain, you got to get Wordpress like we did in our blog http://www.mooladays.com
