- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42If one of your problems is that you can't figure out why you can't copy Cars to your iPod, we need to switch places.
- tripm, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32@duositex
how many movies do you need to carry around at any given time? i have about a 30 gig music library - so I bought a 60 gig iPod - not that tragic. I can still hold way more movies than the poor little ipod battery would ever let me play in one sitting. - hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24He did mention Instant Handbrake, which is pretty much fool-proof.
- GenVoss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22This is pretty much a ripoff of a tutorial on the Videora website, and they have better instructions too.
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18No, it's not.
Shouldn't you be at recess? - tzmguitarist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I use DVD to iPod by Xilisoft. It was pretty fast - no two-step ... rips straight to mp4
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Well yeah I watch movies over and over or just have them running in the background.
- Poppeseed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Its in the first section. Under "Lucky Mac users". Read again.
- smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Depends on where you live.
- pak314, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Do people really replay movies that much? I watch DVD movies maybe once or twice after I buy them then maybe a year later have interest in watching them one more time?
- misteral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow, you're cool.
My guess is the author hasn't met you yet, and thought he'd write an article for all the other people out there, who maybe haven't figured it out yet - Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15@tripm - Doesn't seem like its helping me much :-| I'm not that popular on digg I guess :-)
- PirateFSM, on 11/01/2007, -4/+11Ok for starters....Mplayer and Mencoder.
#!/bin/bash
echo -n "Please enter DVD name: "
read name
mencoder dvd:// -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1 -alang en -oac copy -o /dev/null
mencoder dvd:// -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=2:bitrate=-700000 -alang en -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=3 -o $name.avi &&

Done. - Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"THIS IS ILLEGAL KIDS, DON'T DO IT"
Yeah, when I was in cell block C the other day we were sittin' around, shootin' the *****, and some new guy says to me "Whatcha in for?" and I'm like "handbrake, dude." The fear in his eyes was priceless. - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7road trip, plane ride, between classes, bored in class.... lots of reasons.
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15wtf - i thought digg's community was smart enough to use a GOOGLE SEARCH to figure out how to copy movies to their ipod. If you need this article, GTFO.
http://www.google.com/search?q=mac+copy+dvd+to+ipod&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
First result. - masterkenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@amnesiac096
I think that any of our answers would differ since analysis/encoding of the VOB's are pretty reliant on CPU speed and such. - Szandor, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4"...most adam sandler movies, well made movies..."
Try again. - briguymaine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I know there are still people out there who are just now getting a video ipod and they want to know how to rip dvd to the player. But damn, does it still need to hit the front page of Digg? The search function in any reputable browser can hand you the answers you are looking for.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are 4-5 programs I can think of off the top of my head that do almost everything that does for free.
- bettaa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9well, damn, i stand corrected, missed that part.....
- xkenny13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I found the article useful. I already had DVD Decrypter, but information on the second utility to go straight to iPod format was useful.
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6a kid can watch a disney movie a hundred times and not get bored.
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's useful when I want a copy of a friend's movie, or to put something I downloaded onto my iPod. Oh wait, that's illegal isn't it?
- zanvann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Handbrake was ported to windows...a long time ago:
http://www.sr88.co.uk/handbrake.php - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4um yeah, been able to do this forever on the mac with "hand break." DVD decrypted works really well too. I used it back when I used a PC.
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Even if he could (which I doubt, as I'm pretty sure he doesn't own 51%), how on earth would that make it any easier to convert your DVD to an iPod format?
But honestly, it's incredibly easy. Instant Handbrake on a Mac, Videora on Windows. Both are very simple borderline-idiotproof solutions, though I seem to remember IH being a bit easier (presumably because every copy of OS X includes its DVD Player app, and wouldn't need to work around the protection on the disc itself since it can play it legitimately). - mctwist16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if you own a full copy of Nero just use Nero Recode. it has iPod settings and can convert straight from DVD to iPod format in about 30min. you will probably need to run it along with AnyDVD but this is much quicker and full 2hr movies can be formatted down to about 500mb with great quality!
- crazybrit, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3Wow, what a valuable tutorial. Next up: how to tape shows on the teevee onto a "vee see are" so you can watch them again later!
- xkenny13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I thought the point of the article was using FREE software?
- bertram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Not much has happened on the HandBrake front for quite some time, so some developers decided to fork the open source development and create their own nonofficial version. MediaFork is the open-source community-contributed HandBrake fork they developed."

Actually, I have used this process for quite some time and I managed to put quite a few movies at the same time onto my 30GB iPod. You can fit more than you think! - thespottedelf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yet another reason to buy a mac
- scootinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is Killer being dugg down? He IS right - there is no question that it is illegal in the US (as well as several other countries) - the DMCA says so. (if someone can show me where it says that it is legal to rip CSS'd DVDs in the US, please show me where!) I'm not saying ripping DVDs is wrong or anything - I do it myself.
- IceSabre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@tzmguitarist
Yeah I like the Xilisoft also. I got the version that converts to just about every major format though instead of the just iPod one.
@amnesiac096
Seems like the last few movies I did equated out to 2 hours = 30 minutes or so. Not real fast... I think maybe has something to do with getting the data off DVDs with current DVD drives. - mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the complete omission of linux.
HandBrake works for linux too if anyone was wondering:

it's totally free download
http://www.e-zsoft.com/DVD-to-iPod-Converter.html - UglyShirts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have sync issues with Videora. After about twenty minutes, the audio/video sync goes way off, and it only gets worse as the movie goes on.
At least, that's on my wife's iPod. I have a Creative Zen Vision M, and it plays anything. - cleo2007, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0Cucusoft hasn't failed me not even once.
- escheppa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like dvd shrink to "open" the dvd and handbreak for windows http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=tivo-mplayer&filename=HandBrake-0.7.0-cygwin.zip&use_mirror=superb-east to to the rest.
