- Jerkpie, on 03/03/2009, -1/+23If you're a Photoshop user (like most of us I'm sure) there is a free plugin available.

There's no need for any conversion software when you can directly create and edit an icon in the same program. - myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18thumbs down? sure, no problem. oh, you did mean your comment, didn't you?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Because 74 (now) people care about PNG to ICO conversion. Apparently you are out numbered.
Because PNGs are easy to create, and ICOs are not. This way you can edit in photoshop/etc and convert to a nice pretty icon. - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10the real solution: AveIconifier 2 (freeware)
http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/showthread.php?t=15304 - KingAR_II, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is an extremely useful, easy to use tool +digg!
- nlogax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I just use regular PNG files, works fine.
Except in IE, but what DOES work in IE... - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8* bangs two rocks together and grunts * oh no, I'm de-evolving cuz I dugg this!
- CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ wirez
you've made my day, thanks! - lhnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6lubos: That is because it is a "png to ico" converter, not an "avi to png" converter!
- PolyVector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That is completely false although I hear this myth perpetuated all the time. The ICO format is very VERY different from BMP... An ICO can contain raw bitmap data, but is in no way compatible... How exactly do you explain the alpha-mask? :)
I should know, I wrote ConvertIcon :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4lupus,
Aqua-Soft is a Windows site.(i'm the former admin)
Did you even click the link? - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Converting PNG to ICON may not be new news but some people may have never tryed it before and this is a nice little web app that does it for you.
- Nchalada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PolyVector is right, the Creative Commons license and the like are there for a reason...
- PolyVector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In case you weren't aware, some people create icons FOR other people to use... Not all artwork is proprietary... I think you need to read up a little bit on Creative Commons, GPL, Public Domain, and other interesting topics...
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Windows knows how to use a bmp as if it were an icon, but it isn't one. Before they came up with thumbnail view, there was a registry hack that allowed you make your bmp files all display their contents as their icons from within explorer. It works for some other file formats too.
- PolyVector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Langford is exactly correct. The format is different, but Windows can also understand the bmp format and will use it in place of an icon.

This seems too good to be true. Can anyone confirm that it rocks hardcore? - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using Icon Sushi to do this, but with more control, and with a bunch of other functions too.
http://www.towofu.net/soft/e-aicon.php - theonlydrayk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Try IrfanView
http://www.irfanview.com/
@Icon
http://www.towofu.net/soft/e-aicon.php
You are pathetic convert png to ico is easy as convert gif to jpg - PolyVector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Muddle... That's just moronic... Obviously those works of art aren't under a Creative Commons license, which makes it illegal... You've managed to miss the point entirely...
- AndrewLZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3no it's not mac only. i use it plenty :)
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3gimp can do the same thing just scale down your image to the right size and save it as a icon file
- TheProfessional, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@IconSushi is a really awesome program. I've been using it for all of my png/icon needs for the last couple of years.
- PolyVector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It does support ICO->PNG... :D
- rickly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Perhaps you would be interested in this online resource as well...
Fav Icon from a Pic (online)
http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/ - dotdan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@idonthack: some browsers automatically recognize favicon.ico as the favicon.. until everyone uses one browser, the easiest route is to just make icons.
- Knio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2PolyVector: Thanks for the reply :) However.. I do this all the time using MS Paint, and it has always worked for me. I have never acctually looked at what is going on, but it definately acts like an ico file. Is there an explination for this?
- PhilKennedy, on 06/29/2009, -0/+0Its YOU that is pathetic.
Irfanview does NOT make a good icon.
Just shrinks the f***** pic.
No transparent background
Irfanview is great but compared to aveicon its sh*** - Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Coverticon? Is that like a Decepticon?
- jb55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IrfanView is great for batch conversions. If your looking for something to convert a large amount of png's into any other format, I definatly recommend it.
- earlycj5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've always used pngtoico, http://freshmeat.net/projects/pngtoico/
- jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thanks, thanks, and thanks. im working with macromedia fireworks, then when i need to create an .ico , i dont need to open photoshop again
- CraftBeatz, on 02/23/2009, -0/+0Nice!
- slali, on 09/26/2008, -0/+0With this online tool, http://www.iconshock.com/software-icons/icon-creat ... you can convert to ico, to png, to gif, change backgrounds and create combined icons for free.
- honourablewhite, on 06/09/2008, -0/+0An excellent resource - thanks v much for this!
- wiener, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1like this site? http://media-convert.com
- rax262, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hmm... sorry for the repost
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I suppose it handles 16 bit grayscale images and the alpha channel? No loss, mm hmm, sure it does.
- pinetree, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Try png2ico:
http://www.winterdrache.de/freeware/png2ico/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1you dont need a plugin just "save-as" .ico in pscs2
- brizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dynamic Drive has one.... I've used it in the past.
Supported file formats: gif, jpg, png, and bmp
http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/ - utch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3There are lots of sites that do this for you. We need a good free program that does this.
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What about the other way (ICO>PNG)?
- reedreeder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1for mac users, iconverter serves a similar purpose, but is much more versatile. convert to and from icns, icons, jpeg, tiff, png, gif, or ico.
- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Here is a nice option to use on your mac.
http://www.freemacware.com/img2icns/ - lubos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4it's mac only.
for those who have photoshop, there's free plugin for icons at http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/info/icoformat.html - JRBlack10, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nice idea, but did you have to make it look like a Mac? Besides there are many other toos available to do the same thing.
- raoulpop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I think it stinks. Have you taken a look at the size of the files it generates? I created an .ico file with it, and when I compared its size to a previous .ico file, the one made by them was 97kb, and the one I had was under 1kb.
This is not a tool, it's a gimmick! - Muddle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0One thing I'm assured of is, Mr. Raymonds will be more offended by changing that png into a gif than any other thing I've done.
