- deviousmind1, on 10/27/2008, -1/+19AWESOME!! THIS SOFTWARE ROCKS! I use it on my MacBook Pro for TeamFortress2. Works great with Steam, Microsoft Office 2003, and IE6. Not great for some programs, but I use Parallels for those (when I have to). This is better then the free can of Dr. Pepper for Chinese Democracy. LOL
- shanesan, on 10/27/2008, -1/+13Sweet. Can't wait. Always good stuff, Codeweavers. Keep up the good work and thanks for the Lame Duck Challenge!

- svensksvamp, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8Crazy good!
- NinjaofCupcakes, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7The honest answer is that you can read about each on their respective sites. But here is a bit of an overview:
Parallels needs windows, Wine and CrossOver do not (cost advantage). Picture this, you are running two OSeseses on your computer and thus... slow.
Wine is free... but not necessarily user friendly. If you are a typical computer user trying to convert to Linux or Mac and still needing to load Windows software... you are probably going to get frustrated quickly. You can post in the Wine forums and get some very helpful answers but it may take a while and there is no guarantee you get an answer.
CrossOver is the best of Wine. It is tested against the list of supported applications prior to each release. It is user friendly and the 'giveaway' includes the support you would get if you purchased the product. It is also quick... no need for Windows means no running Windows and no buying Windows. Quite the advantage for speed and cost. Well worth it in my book (of course, I am a bit biased... but I have used Parallels and VMWare and I would not recommend either for day to day use). - Kingoftherings, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7I've heard Source Games run really well on it, and they support Wine, unlike Cedega. So I'll definitely download it, heck I might even just donate some money if it works well enough to get rid of Windows.
- kushalone, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6great promotional tactic!
I can only hope that the exposure to CodeWeavers gives the company some confidence in investing more time and effort into Wine development. - pendor, on 10/27/2008, -1/+7This is awesome! Codeweavers is a local (to me anyway) company of real humans who are making affordable (and now FREE for a day!) software that makes peoples' lives better. I can't think of anything better than that from a software company.
Thank you Codeweavers. - cquilliam, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6They held true to their word. Codeweavers and Crossover seriously kicks ass. Great job guys, and I will continue to use your products faithfully.
- greebly, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5Breathe new life into your old PC games by playing them on your Mac. I've played Deus Ex, Heroes of Might and Magic IV and others on my Mac under CrossOver. It works pretty well.
- sota767, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Buy Crossover -> Feed Wine developers -> Developers write more code for Wine -> ??? -> More Windows apps work!
- JZardoz, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4I use Crossover now for more than 2 years and it's great! No virtual machine, no dual boot just kick off the Windows program and run with it!
- rwheadon, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4WOOT!! Free? For Me? You guys ROCK!!
- rmccs0x, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4BEST digg story in quite some time..
- Capn_Kirk, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4This is great - Codeweavers (although a bit intermittent on their forums) have a great piece of software.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4ah yes, nothing catches a digger's attention like free software, and maybe porn
- kragil, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Only for US Americans??
- NinjaofCupcakes, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4All of the effort put into CrossOver goes to Wine... in all reality most of it goes into Wine first and gets pulled into CrossOver after some testing to the supported applications.
- wettej01, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Excellent. Great software, and now free for a day!
- teamanx, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Excellent program, and great people there at Codeweavers.
- photonics, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3this link isn't working but i dugg it anyway cause thats how happy i am
- LennyX, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3The question is not whether you will be able to get the code. The question is whether the code will come to you.
- Vadi0, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Definition for a gamer: Parallels (along with VirtualBox and VMware) you can't really games in.
Wine, you can game in, but it might seem unpolished at times, and you might need to follow instructions to get games to work.
Crossover is built on Wine, but the tricks needed to get something to run is usually included with the program, and it has it's own windows for managing things. Crossover also contributes their changes back to Wine.
So in short - in most cases, wine suffices just fine, but if you'd like to have a more polished experience, get Crossover.
PS. I do realize that VMware sports d3d or whatever now, but afaik it has horrid performance losses. - obby1, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Cool. Codeweavers is doing a great job with wine. Go Codeweavers!
- brainnovate, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Can't wait!
- antdude, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2What time? Midnight PDT?
- cquilliam, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Because today is not tomorrow, at least not in Minnesota
- syberghost, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Gotta love it. Basically, the premise is "gas prices are high because Bush sucks. If Bush stops sucking gas prices will come down and we'll give you free software." Then gas prices come down. "Gas prices collapsed because Bush sucks!"
Dumbass. - AzureRise, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Awesome, so we'll be able to get a free copy of CrossOver games right?
- commentbot, on 10/27/2008, -1/+3Where's the downloadable FreeBSD version BTW?
- svensksvamp, on 10/27/2008, -1/+3I would love to see Outcast - The Game to be playable under Crossover!
- commentbot, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2This isn't a stupid question (this wouldn't hold true if you were on a Linux forum, though).
- Crossover Office is a nice interface with a compatibility layer that allows you to install specific and tested Windows applications on Linux, FreeBSD and OS X.
- WINE is a cutting-edge version of Crossover Office without the GUI so you have to use the terminal. Reading documentation and accessing the WINE web site at times is necessary.
- Parallels is an application that runs on your Mac where you can install a full version of Windows and run Windows inside a Mac window, as if it were a Mac application like any other. - jsmithers, on 10/27/2008, -1/+3SORRY FOR ASKING A STUPID QUESTION
- but what's the difference between their Crossover product, Wine, and Parallels?
Thanks. - JAVandiver, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2You may be correct, but the point is moot... They are giving away free stuff.
- Kingoftherings, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Web Development probably.
- workhs, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2How about oversea??
- AzureRise, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Awesome, if Steam runs well I just might wipe my Windows partition and make my Linux one larger. Only thing keeping me in Windows now is that I can't log into or download songs off remix.nin.com in Linux for some reason. The big side bar on the left is just a big empty white square in Linux. Then again, I can still listen to them, so maybe I'll wipe my partition anyways!
- svensksvamp, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I got a serial but I haven't had the chance to use it yet.
I have even installed the applications on my mac, still no requests for a serial? - roopesh, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Parallels/VMWare: Actually running Windows inside Mac OS X. You can do/have everything Windows provides, as well as OS X, side-by-side. You are dedicating resources (RAM, HDD, CPU, etc.) to Windows. Performance can be sluggish for Windows & OS X, since resources are split.
Crossover/Wine: You're not really running Windows, you're running some compatibility software that makes the application you install think it's in Windows. The Windows applications you choose to install run as if they are in Windows, but they're part of the OS X operating system. Less compatible with applications, and less of a resource hog, as you don't need to actually run Windows. Oh, and less user-friendly, though Crossover does a good job making it more user-friendly. - umaranjum, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1I went to the website's home page but how do we get code for the free product?
i havent figured it out yet - DriversPlaza, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1wow thats nice !! more giveaways @ http://www.techlookz.com/application-downloads/
- NinjaofCupcakes, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Central time (Minneapolis/St Paul, MN)
- umaranjum, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1So we will be able to get the code tommorow?
- jrmorris77, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1SWEEEEEEET! Finally, I can get the hell off of Winbloze for good! Those last few apps I had to have Winbloze for will run on the latest Crossover Office, but I had an old version. This saves me money and a ton of headaches with Vista.
THANK YOU CodeWeavers!!!! - loklok, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1why the register's page can't be opened???
when I click http://register.codeweavers.com, the page turn to http://down.codeweavers.com/.
Why??
the porduct is for US,not for China???? - AzureRise, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1ie and Linux? Thanks for trying to help, but no thanks.
- svensksvamp, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1so apparently the builds on their site are already unlocked..what about updates?
- djchester, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1No the site could not take all the traffic. That's all. They have also extended the time to unlock your serial number so keep trying:
"You will be able to unlock your serial number that was emailed to you for an extended time, (an additional 48 hours), due to this downtime. We will simply stop giving out new serial numbers at 23:59 (Midnight) Central Standard Time." - aa2zr, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Linux Baby!!
