- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Slightly misleading title, while we are ahead of the world average, I believe some countries of europe are over the 30% mark.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45You are correct. Finland, Slovenia, and Germany are at 30% or more, with total European usage being over 20%:

Poland has 19% Firefox + 6% Opera (in 12mln sample) - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42I guess the author doesn't think the "world" extends outside of north america.
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Agreed, this is inaccurate.

- NotParker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The most interesting statistics I have gathered is that Linux has a negligible share of the OS market. Almost all of those Firefox users are Windows users.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mrmedia
There's no mention of South America in the article.
More like "Canadian Firefox use above average" - ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pornel: Poland has 19% Firefox + 6% Opera (in 12mln sample)
Hu ho, he forgot Poland! :)
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45You are correct. Finland, Slovenia, and Germany are at 30% or more, with total European usage being over 20%:
- ramibotros, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4How do u prove this anyways.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You take a sample of website hits, and mark their IP addresses and browsers. Then you hope that sample was representative of the population.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You can't do it reliably. For example, most of the people who use MySpace are probably IE users, but they don't release that information. Most of the people who use Digg are probably Firefox users, with a small share of Opera (bless your heart).
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3No, you're ISP can determine your browser, so it's likely a cross-section of ISP stats, not website stats. Site stats can be skewed by user bias.
- wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This story is bigger than just Firefox. Look at the Opera stats as well: 2.15% of Canadians use Opera, while the world stats are 0.79%
Overall, only 77.41% of Canadians are using IE, which is lower than both the World and U.S. totals listed.
Just goes to show that a significant minority of Canadians aren't MSIE sheep.- geminem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3many people in Taiwan use alternative browsers too-- like KKMan and PCMan (but i don't know if these are IE-based like Maxthon though). just thought i'd share this info about these two more obscure browsers. =)
- whitehatlurker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18So the title should read "Canada trails world average in MS IE adoption."
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3How can someone be a "sheep" for using a web browser? I'd love to know.
- j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3lol....not real sheep dumbass.....they mean led around by the nose......why would anyone use IE unless they just dont know any better.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28Yet, just another of the Many MANY things that makes canada an awesome place...
- Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+51Canada is awesome.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How about other countries? I don't want to know specifics about just two countries, I want to see what the trend is around each continent... Those percent figures seem a little low, I don't know anyone who doesn't use Firefox, even my grandparents use it... I don't see anyone firing up IE to surf the internet.
- babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6You really didn't break your back working on the article description, did you?
Not to mention having a title that accurately represents the story.

- 7diesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mm never even seen the firefox option to id as explorer... don't really think a lot of firefox users turn that option on either.

if I could rate your comment lame, I would have. - 7diesel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2^ ever considered that there are people here who don't speak english as their first language?

- id000001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4As much as I like Canada (myself being one) being world leader in using a better browser, this is inaccurate. Reported. No dig.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Off-topic: I am just another ignorant American, but I truly love our neighbor to the north. I apologize for my fellow countrymen who enjoy poking fun of you guys for various reasons because I and many of my friends think you really are a kickass country.
Just as an aside: I live in Maine, is there any chance of Quebec or New Brunswick annexing us?- cyclo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If you Maine was part of Canada, you too would be celebrating a long weekend... it is Victoria Day on Monday.
- Skeksis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I was disappointed to see the small percentage of people using Opera. If you never gave it a try you should definitely check it out. I like it better than firefox. not trying to promote it, lol, just think a lot of people would like it better.
- AirRaven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'd say that Firefox just has the edge over Opera if you have need of anything which extensions offer. Opera 9's Widgets just don't come close to the integration of extensions.
Otherwise, Opera trumps it hands down in most respects. Both are fantastic browsers in their own rights, though.
- AirRaven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'd say that Firefox just has the edge over Opera if you have need of anything which extensions offer. Opera 9's Widgets just don't come close to the integration of extensions.
- bluelines, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It bothers me that so many people still use Internet Explorer. I think IE should be used once and only once: to get to the Mozilla website in order to download Firefox!
- AirRaven, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Or, alternatively, you could use it as your main browser, like the majority of the world do quite happily.
Microsoft are putting a herculean effort into patching each vunerability as soon as it appears. It may not be able to match Firefox, Opera, Safari, or the other "Big Players" for ease of use and speed, but there's no denying it's more than good enough for most tasks. - DarkDays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's because IE is the default browser and people who use the Internet just to check for emails or what not do not bother, or that they have no knowledge of other browser's existence since it's presented to them when Windows is installed.
Also, most public computers, like those in the library, generally use IE as well. I use FireFox at home but when I'm at school, I have to use IE. Our accounts do no "have enough permission" to install FireFox, or anything for that matter; when I'm at school, I would be considered as an IE user.
If Windows prompted a "choose your browser" option during installation or something, assuming u can change it anytime, it would have a better representation of browser share.
ps I wans't trying to say everyone uses Windows when I made some statements. In fact, I have both PCs and Macs =D
- AirRaven, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Or, alternatively, you could use it as your main browser, like the majority of the world do quite happily.
- dexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wonder if Call For Help has any thing to do with this? Leo LaPorte is one of Firefox's biggest fans
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, and sadly, TechTV is no longer here in the states. I hope G4's corporate offices are engulfed in a firey explosion, and the suits responsible for the TechTV demise are all burned alive. Only then can the world have peace.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3I am use Firefox. Firefox rocks. Opera rocks too. IE don't.
( Don't mod me down just because of incorrect grammar. )- 7diesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2say hello to the digg grammar fascists. you better keep the grammar book nearby, cos correct grammar is soo important to them.
- Zzone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wow. They are pretty smart up there in that Canada, Eh?
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tech TV is a specialty channel that you have to order specifically so most people do not get the channel.
- SuperFarStucker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It continues to amaze me that Opera has such a miniscule market share when it is the technological leader by any measure. It just goes to show that this 'war' cannot be won by technical superiority.
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Umm.. STFU
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You are right, in a way. Opera is certainly smaller, faster and more secure than Firefox.
But Opera was adware for a long time, and then Firefox came around and it was "good enough" (far better than IE mind you), and it was free as in beer. Mozilla hired professionals to do marketing, and the rest is history.
If Opera had gone free without ads before Firefox was finished, it might have been in a better position today.
Extensions may have contributed to Firefox's popularity to a certain extent. However, I find extensions to be very problematic. They are rather buggy, cause various problems, and break when upgrading. Opera has most of the most useful features built in an integrated smoothly already.
And Opera is partially extensible by installing new toolbars, buttons, with User JavaScript, etc. - crahak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Opera is good, but superior? Not really. It has some advantages (memory usage namely), but what kills it is the lack of firefox-like extensions. Supposedly there's a (somewhat complicated) way to block ads with it, but that's just a start... Not quite as nice as adblock. Now give me an equivalent to the web developer toolbar and forecastfox too, and I'll most likely switch main browser.
Anyhow. As long as it's not the incredibly insecure, buggy, has-a-new-highly-critical-exploit-everyday, please-install-all-the-spyware POS browser (which also has very poor support of well established standards like CSS and DOM), it's all good :) - worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, Opera does better at those basic things like speed, memory usage, etc. Firefox may have extensions, but that's kind of on top of the actual browser.
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Never a complete digg article on Firefox without the Opera trolls.

- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Right On!
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah its because of Call For Help they plug Firefox nonstop Leo Laporte not "Leo LaPorte" is a Firefox groupie. TechTV lives on in Canada but that's cause the US keeps all the other country's poor look at Spain, Mexico... The USA-holes are wrecking the world and it's own citizens are blind to it. More Americans vote for American Idol then for Bush/Kerry that's just wrong.
- edysteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is call for help tv back in the us on G4 or crap4?
- eazman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops, didn't mean to post here. go ahead and bury this comment.

- hehe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not only does it show how well Canada does for switching to Firefox, but how well they do at using Opera--which is better in my opinion. But really, it just shows how Canada is more of a non-conformist country than the US--go Canada!
- alanspach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3what about the one computer on antartica. Whatever it is running would be 100% market share!
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This only shows the numbers for people visiting Onestat, not every user in the world. GG next map.

- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1it's because most aricans are ignorant fools or just plain idiots not to use firefox & they use ie 5 or 6 usually. they think that it's microsoft & they have to use it, because it's the way of the future. i like them, i think their web browser is ok, & love firefox 2.0, i mean ie 7. (he he) ie 7 = noob's firefox.

- twertyto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wake up people. Do the research. I have. Firefox is a momery hog, slowest browser among the popular titles and incompatiable with at least 15% of all websites. It has great extensions. That's about it.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/FirefoxMyths.html - gunmod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The point that 85.17% of the world STILL uses IE is proof that 85.17% of the world is made of morons.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Innacurate, Canada does not lead the world in Firefox usage.
- Nitsugua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, obviously, the person writing the article at digitalhouse.com thought that 'being above average' equals 'being at top rank'...
