- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Not really...
I've done it almost every day for the last 4 years without a problem. Not to mention that at any given time, there are probably at least 5 people in every car with white earbuds. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19You know, I've lived in New York City for a total of about 20 years, and I've never been mugged, no matter what I was carrying.
Unfortunately its true--if you look like a victim, its only a matter of time before you become one. - CaptainScience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I have to second Mrc539....2.5 years of daily subway rides and I have never had a problem.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I might be a victim, then. I've gotten hassled at least 4-5 times before on the subways over the years. At this point I try not to take them if I'm alone. It's too risky; I've become pretty damned afraid of the system, actually.
Then again, I come in at a midgety 5'5". So my height may be the problem there. - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah, if only stories were relevant to the stuff most people use on a day to day basis, like their iPod...
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I've gotten mugged for a crappy cassette walkman on the subway after a CBGB's show. An iPod has to be even more desirable than that. . .
I bought a pair of non-white earphones for my iPod, anyways, so color me paranoid. But yeah... I leave it at home when I'm in the city. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I doubt using an iPod is THAT foolish since it seems like half of the people on any given subway car are using one.
I do admit though that sometimes when I have a new toy, I do grip my electronic device a little tightly when those car doors open. Not that I'm scared, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious. - dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nope, it isn't. Here's the original creator of the subway maps for the iPod...
http://www.isubwaymaps.com/
and here was the story that started the big stink...
http://wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,68967,00.html
Looks like the NYC maps are available as well as a bunch of other cities. This guy spent a lot of time designing the maps himself and claims their more accurate geographically than what the city offers. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Suicidal? I have mine every time I ride and if you look around so do about 10-20% of passengers. People whip our their sweet video ipods or PSP or DS all the time.
- TheThing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I agree with the rest. I have lived in NYC for all my life and I have never seen an ipod stolen. Unfortunately, there are occasions in the subway lines where robberies occur. Its pretty safe unless you go to shady areas.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now is this same subway maps for the iPod the MTA blocked because the creator violated some copywrite infringement? Even though the maps were free and the guy who made the maps offered them for free, the MTA still said stop it or else?
Better get the maps while they're still available! - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I take my iPod on the train every day. I've walked around at night in Harlem with it out. Never had a problem with that. Closest I've been to being mugged is some crazy lady tried to steal a bag from bed bath & beyond with pillows in it.
Regardless, what self-respecting New Yorker needs a subway map? - duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since this is about NC subway system, figure this would be a useful link as well:
http://www.onnyturf.com/subway/
has the Jersey PATH trains as well. - mdsanta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all I've been using the new york subwaysystem for over ten years and have yet to go through any bad situations or know someone who has. If your gonna get mugged over an ipod your gonna lose it anywhere , be it the city or a nice quiet high class town. Just look at 4chan's "an Hero" }:o)
Is this from the same guy who created the first Ipod maps a while back, and was forced to take them down bymta due to copyright infrigment? - rickytan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This guy below me obviously has never been on a new york subway.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3hahahha!
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, neither did I.. I pressed delete a second before the "Edit" option went off.. ah well..
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Most passengers do. I don't. I leave my iPod (and phone) for the trade. No reason to get robbed. And, is it safe? Well, generally yeah. And most guys do have iPods, but I don't want to take the risk.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the exact same information you can get on http://www.mta.info, or on the pillars of just about every subway station in the city, or on the trains themselves. And you have the benefit of an actual map at those locations.
Without a visual guide, seems to me these iPod pics are more likely to get you lost than to your destination. - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Klisk: Well, things have changed since 1987
- TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3No thanks. I don't want my iPod to smell like urine and vomit...
http://www.gawker.com/maps/smell/ - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1These may not be using the MTA's maps but they are using the logos for the trains. I'm not sure if that is under public domain or not. If not, then I would assume that the MTA will stop this guy once they wind of things...
- crimes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3In b4 www.duggmirror.com
- TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I didn't know North Carolina had a subway system...
- sbovisjb1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1And ladies and gents, thats why free software is always better than propriety. It gives the user more,in different and wacky ways.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Cool. My Cowon A2 actually came with PNGs of the Seoul SK subway system.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1WOW, three ipod stories on my google home page section at one time. Pretty lame. Stop spamming every single ipod story on digg? Please.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -25/+2This is cool and all, but honestly, it's pretty suicidal to carry your iPod on the subway system in the city.

What is Digg?
