- rflint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Official announcement and download links here: http://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/index.php/2006/05/26/bon-echo-alpha-3-milestone-released
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17And the actual link, instead of diggspam:
Portafox 2.0 Alpha 3 -- http://www.public.iastate.edu/~wagner84/PortableFirefox2.0a3.zip - radda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Ah...in line spell checking is a Godsend.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You can already do that, use the "Tab Catalog" extension, it shows you a window full of thumbnails for all the tabs you have open, pretty good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Or FoXposé or Firefox Showcase. Choice is good, I don't have to wait five years for some vapourware to be released so I can enjoy one feature.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's an alpha release. If you want auto-updates, stick with the final releases.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Ah, you're using Linux. I only go from experience, but every time I've complained about a problem I'm always been given one very simple answer:
Fix it yourself.
Hope this helps,
Kind regards,
Kroc. (now an OS X user)
(disclaimer: look up 'satire' in the dictionary if it was not obvious) - schwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thumbnail tabs? A useless feature for many of us. Unless a features has an overwhelming use it should be by extension only. This keeps the browser from being bloated and buggy.
- kilps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6seconded ... it is irritating to put that extra bit of effort in :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is a given, which is why it worries me that Digg users see fit to link to every other nightly Mozilla builds. These are testing builds only, people who work on the code do not run these builds without a backup of their profile. There has been many occassions where test builds have erased and damaged profiles, and this is to be expected at this stage. Any old digg user should not be downloading and installing this without knowing how to back up their profile
- raykart, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I think I might upgrade to the beta once it's out. Firefox is awsome, however Opera has some good things too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Because this release is not intended for use by anybody but developers, and auto-updating was considered bad for testing purposes.
- Coletrickle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8hm, why cant aplha2 find the update for alpha3? now i need to manualy update :{
- Axord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Why should we have to use an extension?"
You don't have to, you get to. ;) Which means:
1. Development of the features of the extension can be much faster than that of the browser (one of my extensions had three new releases over the last three weeks, for example).
2. Features are not limited to the ideas of the browser team, but anyone. Including yourself. You can even alter and tweak existing extensions.
3. Different, opposed approaches to the same problem can be put forth, and people can choose which one suits their tastes and needs more. There are about five different extensions that all seem to be offering the feature of "visual tabs" in different ways.
4. Firefox starts with a simple, clean base. If you want added complexity you can get it. But you're not bothered by the clutter of features you don't want.
I won't claim extensions are perfect or without drawbacks, but Opera (for example) would be doomed to endless menu clutter if it ever tried to be all things to all people like Firefox can be.
"Atleast when it's integrated by the actual company there's a better chance of it working correctly at all times."
Like Microsoft? Any software developer can be as committed or not as any other software developer. - Ancestor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yup, it's a known bug. One of the reasons why it's called alpha.
- tdube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Cant wait for the final release
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is this a "review"? It's an overview, not a review.
Sigh. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg, but the search function doesn't work for me under the Bookmarks Manager. (It didn't work for me either under Alpha 2.) It doesn't work on either my notebook or desktop system. Does anybody else have this problem? TIA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I really feel for you man. You gotta move your mouse all the way to the top of the screen and make two mouse clicks.
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but how long till IE 7.5 or 8.0? 7 may be good for *now*, but if they hang on to glacial development of the past, it'll turn into another IE 6...languishing while Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc keep blazing new trails.
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The only thing I'm interested in now is a fix for the memory leak problems. Everything else can already be done with extensions
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it just me or has performance on OS X improved dramatically over Firefox 1.5?
I just checked: the old click-and-hold CPU ramping issue has been fixed, so they changed something.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice features, I hope it's not a memory hog, I wonder when is IE every going to catch up? (hear me Balmer!)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would be sceptical about using an alpha browser for very much. Pre 1.0 there were some ***** nasty bugs in Firefox including one where form data could be read 'across tabs'.
If you use it (and this applies to vista, ie7, anything else that's in testing) make sure you browse carefully. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Profiles are not all that's at risk, it's security.
- electrodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have they fixed the problem that prevents the browser from opening windows on multiple X displays without having to create a separate user profile for each display? Getting that fixed would be a lot more useful to me than diddling around with details like where to place the close button for each tab.
- zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They realy should stop all develloping but one : A Solution For The Memory Leak
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They're doing it. Hence the new releases.
- typobox43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Did this release break the Find feature for anyone else? Ctrl+F doesn't work, nor does the menu option.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love Firefox. It's safe and efficient. Hopefully IE7 will fix at least some of the holes in IE6. It's about time IE got updated.
Dugg. - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and they're going to release Vista Real Soon Now too. i'll believe it when i see it.
- eagleswings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd say it's a MASSIVE improvement on my 1GHz iBook, I'm loving it.
- Ancestor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, Deer Park is 1.5
- Estazor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think I'll check this out. It seems like some good features but to me the features don't make it seem they warrant this to be Firefox 2.
- quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2by far yes, in fact there is also a huge performance increase from Alpha 2 and so far I'm loving it, plus the in line spelling is one feature that was keeping me from not using Firefox as much as I would like.
- Ancestor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How so? Of the entire bunch of new features, a single one was stripped - Places. I don't see how this justifies comparison to Vista.
Oh, and BTW. Opera development may seem more impressive, since they always add tons of features but I really prefer the Firefox's way of keeping things slick and simple instead of adding everything but a kitchen sink to the browser. - Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, the release didn't break the Find. Disable your extensions - I believe I had that problem, yet I couldn't figure out which extension caused it
- rdmsoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'll be a hidden pref in beta 1 if all goes well.
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wasn't page thumbnail previewing originally an Opera feature? Regardless, yeah it would be nice to see it as a core feature. :)
- ArbiterOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but it's probably found in the Tab Mix Plus extension.
Why don't you use your middle mouse button? I don't know if the default Linux install allows you to remap it (it googles the clipboard URL or some crap like that) but I know TMP does. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget Firefox 3.0 is already in the works.
- ZenPirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2krewemaynard, Microsoft has stated that they have decided to update ie on a yearly release schedule.
- moges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with schwit. Thumbnail tabs seems like a useless feature for me, I don't know why I would want it. So yea, a feature thats useful should be available in the default. But thumbnail tabs (at least to me) doesn't useful enough to be in there. Every default feature in firefox I use, almost everyday. Bookmarks, that search box up top right, tabs. Anything else I have installed as an extension I use most of the time, but not all the time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1somewhere along the line my apostrophe started to activate the find function, its grammar hell.
- Big2hd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I was loving firefox(stumble exstension is awesome) before I discovered Opera 9 with there cool add search function and loading speed. Looks like that took care of one them I think cause it seems alot smoother, but the add search function does not work very well(doesn't notice any search engines for me).
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Harsh, but I love it :)
- axentrix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Still no "One button tab-closing, instead of one damn button per tab"-function, as I can see?
* rm -r bon_echo * - teseglet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I discovered Opera 9 a month ago as well and have more of less migrated to Opera for every day browsing although I still keep up with Firefox/Bon Echo developments. Firefox is for hobbyists who like to tweak and Opera is a bit more polished and possibly faster using Windows than FF. FF Betas always seem faster than their predecessors because you have very few compatiable extensions installed to slow it down and bug it out. That has always been my issue with FF, getting extensions to work together lean, nice, fast and properly. Opera seems to have everything work very well together. It is feature filled but light in size. I will admit their experiment with "widgets" is hokey and rather useless.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Konqueror has less market then Safari, so what use has it's spell checking to me? Considering the current line-up is 1: IE, 2: Firefox, 3: Safari/opera, Firefox getting spell checking is an important thing
- reckless8594, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I checked it out. The new features are great. I love that antiphishing gadget. And to scottybowl, there's an extension out there already for the tabbed-browsing thumbnails.
Here: http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/tabpreview/
I haven't used it, though, so I don't know if it's any good. -
