- AKAImBatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mr. 12 Chars still has a point, though. As I said, I do serious (as in commercial and "work" related) documents in OpenOffice. After using it for awhile, I found it to be a much more pleasant experience than Word. Are you sure that most of your prejudices aren't just because the OOo interface is "different"?
I have to say, I probably wouldn't be using OOo if it weren't for two events:
1. My wife got fed up with Word for her Cyrillic documents, and asked me if I could give her anything else. I sheepishly answered that I could install OOo, but I wasn't sure if it would meet her needs. She surprised me though, by finding it much more useful and far more stable. This surprised me so much that I started using it at work. I soon found that it was perfect for technical documentation, especially since it has the built-in ability to export to PDF.
2. When I got my Mac, I didn't want to shell out the dough for Office v.X. I first tried the X11 version of OOo and experienced nothing but frustration. I then stumbled across NeoOffice/J and started trying to write in it. A little while later, Office v.X became available to me. However, I liked NeoOffice/J so much that I simply couldn't force myself to switch to the unwieldy Office interface.
Try OOo for awhile. You may find that you like it. ;-) - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's nice. Useless for a Mac user like myself. But nice.

Have you tried the new 2.0 beta? It's VERY nice.

One of the authors I like (David Weber) supposedly uses OpenOffice quite a bit for authoring. I personally use the derivitive, NeoOffice/J, and have found it to be MORE usable than Microsoft Word. Not to mention that the NeoOffice/J recovery mode is awesome. When Word has a hiccup and crashes, it tends to take my work with it. When NeoOffice/J has a hiccup, it transfers control to a recovery program that saves my work before allowing the system to crash the application. VERY nice.
Unforuntately, I can't personally speak to the issue of writing books in OOo, as my writings tend to be much shorter. (Usually technical articles, specifications, etc.) If I can make a suggestion, though, why not split out each chapter into it's own file? Given the global formatting issues that sometimes creep into ALL wordprocessors, it tends to make sense anyway. Plus, you then don't have to search your single document as hard for what you're looking for. - DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and I will have to try new OOo. Didn't know a new version came out. I haven't touched it since I lost 7000 words to it once on a bad crash. Even after it was a saved a document. I am not by any means dissing Open Office just saying it needs a little work in the coding. I personally support the Open Source community to the best of my abilities, but I must admit WORD is a little better :P
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No I mean for real writing Mr 12 Chars. People who write a one page report aren't using the tool to it's full extent, like a real professional writer would. It's like using a spoon to dig a ditch, it might be work, but more work to accomplish the task doesn't justify it being the right tool. :)
- Patriot-X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Mac support. No digg.
- SuperRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First, thanks for arguing here ... that's great. Way to hijack the post.
Second, I think you naysayers are missing the point. For people who'd like to blog from work, but still want to look like they're working (not to mention spell/grammar check, etc.) this is a great way to do it. Yes, there's no Mac or Linux support yet. Be frickin' patient ... did you really expect them to support anything other than the biggest market first?
By the way, this was made in conjunction with Microsoft, so there is a certain level of special interest there, too. - amihaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boy, is *this* crap...
- ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I will be excited about this when it works with Open Office.
- kpelley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll be excited about this when it works with Emacs and VIM ;)
- joet86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Relax 12_CHARS, Jesus Christ...
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I will be excited when open office works. It sucks for large files, I write novels and short stories etc... not too good for real work.

What is Digg?
