- johnnygizmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Mesh Scuplting, Render Passes, Retopo, Render Baking, Multi-Res Meshes, and so much more. Another milestone release after a 7 month dev period! I have contributed to blender dev in the past (not this release though) and talk about a great coding community. They are really molding Blender into a really great piece of software. Kudos guys (and gals)!
- Ayavaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30It's got new sculpting tools a la ZBrush. I also like the new features for baking lighting to a texture. This was a great update.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28No matter how good the software, your lack of skill is still the problem. ;)
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Hey all, if you want to learn how to use blender come visit us at the official blender users forum!
http://www.blenderartists.org/forum
We can always use new members, and we have a great community already!
/samadam, an admin - jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Great job, Blender Foundation!
Off topic, maybe. But If only the Gimp project could get a clue and rebrand into something like this! Such a shame.
If someone out there had the vision and capacity to manage it, they could certainly fork Gimp, give it a respectable name, improve the UI, and provide a paid support infrastructure, it could really take off. - Cubedude04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Yeah Blender is great =D Been using it for a few years
Another good site to check if anyone is interested in blender is
www.Blendernation.com
Btw this is not a spam post as its a really good site for blender news etc
And a good way to learn blender is to use
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro - Wienkes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Any suggestions of tutorials for new people to get started for this program?
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Don't digg him down; the more people learning the better.
See above comment, http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro ^_^ - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Am I the only one who thinks that's a ridiculous thing to block someone over?
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I can't say enough good things about this product. It's feature set and ease of use is second to none... oh yeah, and its FREE.
- Mcaruso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Besides the amazing update, the web site's been much improved. I always hated the old site.
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The GIMP could do with taking a leaf out of the same book.
- chipitople, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18i downloaded the previous version to mess around with it--but everything i made looked like crap, lol
- masterc, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24The question is, "Why haven't I blocked you yet?"
- JD52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12When I see things as advanced as this taking up only 15 or so meg I have to wonder why some of the super expensive 3D software takes up many hundreds of megs.
- sirmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Blender is truly an amazing piece of free/GPL software.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10My Lightwave install is using up 724MBs, but the actual program is 40MBs. The rest of the space is taken up by the manual, and a bunch of handy videos about certain features.
- Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Met my future wife because of Blender. No.. she's not a mesh object. Been with this software since 2.26 and I've loved it since day 1. Had the pleasure of meeting the dev team at SIGGRAPH 2006. Great people. Watch out for the jelly fish guys! (they know who they are) Enjoy!!!.
- TheBigBrother, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I've been using blender two years ago (forgot version number); i learned a lot of 3d modeling on this
Am i the only one amazed with the free chroma keying?!
*starts putting himself in movie scenes* :p - eddieburns55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That is possibly the strangest comment I have ever read.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Anyone who saw this title and thought of "will it blend" is not fit for the title "computer geek with no life".
Please hand in your badges. You are demoted to "general nerd with no life"."
Yea, I thought that, but only because I was wondering who would be the first Digger to post "But will it blend" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Everyone hit the little no sign next to the time he posted that crap. If enough people do it, he'll get banned.
- gnatinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Woah nice, the website is so much easier on the eyes
- FadieZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Finally! I've been waiting for this forever =) Great job Blender foundation!

Strange... - ThinkGFX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow. Blender 2.43 released. I remember I started 3D graphics with Blender 2.42 and now 2.43 is out. I like the new Sculpt Mode, really nice.
- mukiex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blender's gui isn't immediately easy to use, but a few changed options and 10 minutes in the chatroom (or reading BlenderQuickStart.pdf in the Program Files Blender folder) makes one hell of a difference.
Pull the top menu downwards for options :
- Set "select with" to left mouse button (as a warning, sculpt mode will now function with the right mouse button)
- Set rotate to "Turtable"
- Go to the "Themes" tab at the bottom of this menu and set the theme to "Rounded"
Blender's main advantage, gui-wise, is that it's pop-up free and once you know your way around in one view you know your way around in them all, or at least you can quickly situate yourself. The video editor, buttons window, animation editor, UV/image editor, etc. all use the same basic navigation.
It's all in the middle mouse button (camera rotate, +Ctrl to zoom, +Shift to pan).
Seriously, if you've ever used more than 1 other 3D software package, you'll get blender down in a day. If not, I'd suggest sticking with it anyway. Blender's gotta be the fastest modeler out there. - j4200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I originally learned on maya in school. I've only dabbled with a few tutorials for blender ever. I've been playing with this new version for the last few hours now. This update could be the push I needed to dive right in.
- bugman2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Also, if you need (or can give) support, be sure to check out the BlenderArtists forum here:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/ - spiderworm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@eddieburns55: it's not strange if you were part of the booth crew at Siggraph 2006, but yeah, most people will probably have no idea what he's talking about :)
@bartv and @duositex: I think that I'll be picking the restaurant this year :) - molotovcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 Yes, Blender's interface will drive you insane, but if you stick to it, you'll be glad. I've worked with most of the major modeling programs (3DSM, Maya, XSI, Modo, etc.) and after learning Blender, I never looked back. Every tool for the art pipeline aside from texture creation is located in one free, cross platform program. The only thing left for Blender aside from a few minor feature implementations would be an integrated 2D program such as GIMP.
You can't learn to use Blender to its fullest extent without a good source of tutorials, so I suggest checking this out:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender
The guide is spotty and incomplete like most open-source documents, but if you're willing to spend $15, you can purchase a 700 page PDF from the Blender store. After struggling with the aforementioned wiki book, I can tell you that it's definitely worth it! - xXRobbyXx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thank you so much :)
- aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2stick to it, it is worth it. (I've been using it since 2.24, i remember it being overwhelming then, it has come a long way.:)
- Hunkadoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.blender.org/development/release-logs/blender-243/
Here is a link to the changes in the new version...Awesome stuff! Keep up the good work, Blender team! - sirdaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Blender is taunting us.. "Slashdot and Digg? Bring ‘em on!".. we have to give em the digg effect!!
- bartv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh god! The yellyfish! I still wake up sweating :)
Still, it wouldn't have been so bad if Ton hadn't insisted on ordering from the Chinese menu %^) - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gets a digg because Blender is awesome and grew out of the SGI platform, of which I'm a huge fan. OK I use it on OS X on a Mac Pro these days rather than my faithful old O2, but the feelings still all there.
- JCDenton513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the learning curve is higher then others from what I understand but once you use it for awhile it really is fast to use. Kinda like VIM. Difficult to learn but once you learn it you're flying.
- iaminnocent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And years at becoming proficient.
By then the Blender developers have quadrupled the features set...
Isn't it fun ? :)
Jean - makario, on 09/03/2009, -1/+2While I didn't necessary dislike the old site, you're right: the new one is certainly better.
- GavinAnderegg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know what the heck I'm doing with Blender at just about any time, but I sure love playing with it. I'm glad this project is still alive and kicking!
Nice job on the new web site's look, too. - brundlefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That has been my experience, jcdenton513.
- teppic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Too bad for you, because you seriously don't know what you're missing. I use Maya (in combination with blender) at work, and while it is a really powerful tool (and beats blender in many areas) blender is still far superior for many things IMHO. Why not take the opportunity to use the best of both applications instead of discarding one in favor of the other?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Now, if they could only lower the learning curve. I mean, keerist! Even with the tutorials I was lost.
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FINALLY
I've been looking forward to this soooo much - omgcthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hm..do you really think this is useful software?..
- LetterRip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Every tool for the art pipeline aside from texture creation is located in one free, cross platform program. The only thing left for Blender aside from a few minor feature implementations would be an integrated 2D program such as GIMP."
Try the 3D and 2D texture paint already in Blender it is already pretty good (not BodyPaint 3D yet - but a huge step up from the previous version). - crash128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@iaminnocent:
Yes, fun, lots of fun. But the results (even simple logo's and text) are pretty cool. All one has to do is start with a blank stage, build all the objects and backgrounds in it by hand, paint them all, set up the lights, move them around, run the camera, then develop the film. Nothin' to it. (and then every couple of years most of your tools change (not a bust on blender, any 3d program), like you said).
@mukiex:
Thanks for the tips - I actually will check out the new blender for modeling. - riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Must.. leave.. 3ds max..
Yeah, everytime Blender is released I download the new version to see if I can stop pirating max and use a freeware app. The interface kills it for me, then I got back. But that's it, this time it's Blender.
Must.. learn.. Blender.. - gespertino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blender rocks! The new baking features used along the sculpt mode to achieve amzing low poly models with normal maps are great new additions.
The gap between Blender and the major 3D plackages is closing... -
