- jron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+48Uhh, correct me if I'm wrong here but... uTorrent is still closed source, BitTorrent didn't merge anything, they just changed the name after buying uTorrent. uTorrent IS BitTorrent 6.
- xaque, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43uTorrent isn't cross platform.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -7/+37µTorrent is still closed source. There were reports of it connecting to several anti-piracy sites as well. (Again, even if I'm using it legally, I don't want it to be sending any of my private data. Now do the math, Bittorrent, Inc, who is also in bed with the RIAA/MPAA, is not releasing the source. Why would anyone still want to use this application?
- arcooke, on 10/10/2007, -15/+37I don't know why anyone still uses Azureus. uTorrent is so much better..
- LucasVB, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22You can get μTorrent 1.6, the last "safe" release, here: http://www.oldapps.com/download_old_version_utorre ...
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Those 'reports' were ALL debunked. uTorrent added a new feature, Local Peer Discovery. The IP address some were seeing was a non-resolvable, LAN-only IP address used only for Local Peer Discovery. There is exactly _zero_ hard evidence showing that uTorrent connects to 'anti-piracy sites'.
- LucasVB, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Too late.
- insanebrain, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22Today is a sad day ... uTorrent died.
- soopafly, on 10/10/2007, -8/+24Wow, PC users are a bunch of cry babies. This person asked a legit question and all of a sudden everyone turns into a 12 year old.
- ProfessorLX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14i hope they dont ruin uTorrent.
- npsken, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13But uTorrent is certified wine compatible. Go to the website, it says "For Wine, Windows 95 (Winsock2), 98/ME, NT/2000, XP, 2003, and Vista."
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Ignoring the new comment system and doing it Old School eh?
I like your style, stick it to the man!! - Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The BitTorrent client is not open source.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Download page - http://www.bittorrent.com/download
- Timmmm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Why would you run it under wine? There are plenty of good open source bittorrent clients.
- wisam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Although there's no signs of bad deeds from Bittorrent Inc. after acquiring μTorrent, keeping the old version is a good idea.
- yotomote, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Original bittorrent author has several deals with MPAA/RIAA, we can only guess about the fine print of those contracts, but i bet its not pretty for the users, AND the original bittorrent author, owner of bittorrent INC bought utorrent in 2006, thus, the last version made by the original author is 1.6 build 474, if you use torrents for anything other than downloading linux ISOS, it is recommended you dont do it with a program owned by a corporation with contracts with big media.
- Mononuclear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I think in this case it's the SI unit micro.. so microTorrent
- Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -9/+16Is it out for Mac?
- LucasVB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"Safe" as in "safe in your fearful, paranoid world", since I don't think there's much risk involved with new versions. But I'm sticking with 1.6 anyway, mostly as a zero-impact protest of sorts.
- rollerxpig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7That was my biggest complaint. I use utorrent on my Windows machine, and now I can finally get utorrent features and interface for my Mac. I couldn't put up with Transmission, the old Bittorrent, etc. And no way in hell I'm paying money for xTorrent. That's too ironic. Well, now I'm happy.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6End the confusion!
Ludde coded µTorrent, the best-ever Windows client for BitTorrent.
BitTorrent bought µTorrent from Ludde, now he has nothing to do with the project.
µTorrent is still being developed by BitTorrent, Inc, much to the dismay of many users, even though no 'evil deeds' have been proven even remotely.
BitTorrent has now re-branded µTorrent to replace their own client, and added 'DNA', some sort of questionable DRM-like technology that nobody knows a whole lot about. It is NOT included with the single executable file when you download µTorrent.
Again, µTorrent is STILL being developed separate from the BitTorrent.com client which, as most have said, is essentially just a rebranded version of µT. - brasso, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8This isn’t news. It’s been out for a good while already and besides its nothing but uTorrent with a new name and some feature called "BitTorrent DNA" so if you have ever used uTorrent then you have already seen this anyway.
- Onestone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I'm running it in Wine and I'm happy.
- birch25, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8not yet. and i imagine it will be a while since the latest mac build they have is version 4.27.2
- Cymrubeats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I'm not trying to panic anyone, as it's more than likely a false positive, but i downloaded it from their site, unpacked it (not installed, unpacked it with 7-zip), and a file there called dna.exe is allegedly a trojan (according to avg free anyway).
- jorgepblank, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9This stupid, un-backed rumor has been put down multiple times by various admins of torrent sites such as Demonoid.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Deluge Torrent matches most of uTorrent's features
- wisam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You're right, it's just a re-branded μTorrent.
http://www.bittorrent.com/images/client/btscrn_ful ... - mozzep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5why use ctorrent when you have rtorrent?
- stephenwq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://www.eccentric-toast.com/node/8
Thats what DNA.exe is. You decide if you care about it. - Onestone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Am I the only one who thinks Transmission sucks?
- jorgepblank, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So what should we use, this or uTorrent?
- dschep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Seems that way to me too.. the last version they offer the source for is bittorrent 5.0.9.
- brasso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, only that its BitTorrent 6 thats uTorrent. ;)
- white2grey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Can you explain what you mean by "safe"?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Don't install this *****, it comes with DNA.exe service it runs in the background even if you uninstall it.
- tilleyrw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Warning: Scam Alert! BitTorrent, ever since it's purchase by Big Media has been corrupted. uTorrent has been corrupted since version 1.6 build 474 after another purchase by Big Media.
Paranoia: Yes. Am I wrong? Possibly. Am I reducing my risk? YES! - Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4uTorrent I think.. I think it's updated more frequently. I mean, this isn't news, and I believe uTorrent has even had at least one update done to it since, already.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's actually on the utorrent forums themselves... People have been running network scanners and not found anything "suspicious". It definitely doesn't try to connect to / listen to IP's unrelated to the torrents anyway. You'd see something like that discovered VERY soon.
One feature addition of uTorrent 1.7 was also rumored to be something bad, but it was just the paranoid people misunderstanding it.
There are so far no documented reason besides paranoia to reconsider using uTorrent 1.7. - xichael, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3μTorrent uses less RAM...
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's a known false positive. I've seen a game installer based on the DNA tech. Especially AVG went nuts about it, and I had hoped this had been fixed by AVG by now. I don't know why it's triggered, but DNA is a BitTorrent based service that installs itself as a control panel applet and shares the file you're downloading from the game company's servers, thereby reducing their bandwidth costs.
- Onestone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3@kris33: You can. Just create a tiny bash script which runs uTorrent with a parameter.
- HHP2K, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Given the appearance of the "new" Bittorrent 6, it's just uTorrent with Bittorrent's name on it, so you're right.
- jorgepblank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Did you try restarting your pc?
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Because there aren't any open source bt clients that have the right amount of features and such an incredibly low foot print.
If you are like me, and you are seeding 40+ torrents, you really want features...
The next closest client to utorrent that is open source is azureus (which is what I use now that I have 2gb of ram) but az will always use over 100mb of ram due to the fact that it is made in java, and if you are running on a 512mb machine...that is really unacceptable. - dbr_onix, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3More importantly, how did that screenshot get 14MB/s downloads?
- dtfinch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I wonder how the Linux port is coming along.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why go to the effort, just use KTorrent.
- filodawg420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He isn't stupid, he's just predictably human. As an older guy I'll say this, he's over 30 and has a kid. Alot of these guys get into "provider mode" as family responsibilities takeover and they drop their ideals just to make easy cash for their family and to get the wife a new van. Look at all the musicians and cool celebs that sellout everyday to support families, ex wifes, baby mamas. Bram could care less about you and your quest for every pirated 30rock episode. he is still sitting pretty. if they wanted to add spyware, he would probably look the other way. don't buy the hype. hopefully some ambicious programmer will come along and take the lead and make their own clone. then we'll have cooltorrent (a utorrent clone), or something like that. or would that be cauc? i would do it myself, but i don't program code.
