Yea if MSN is still around by then. - SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He listens to Infected Mushroom, thats awesome.
- Evergreen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call *****.
1. Windows theme shows MS Sans Serif for all other dialogs. Font in the forged message box is Times New Roman. You cannot have this combination of fonts in Windows.
2. JPEG compression around text. It's not only a fake, but a poor quality one.
3. Text style is poorly written. Microsoft does not use the term "Hardware ID". I applaud the fact that nothing's been misspelled but it still smacks of unprofessionalism.
4. The message box is an incorrect size for any error dialogs within Messenger. In fact, it's the "About" dialog box with text replaced: http://ev98.net/hosted/aboutmsn.png
So, in conclusion, ***** off with fake JPEGs. - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It definitely is a fake. No such code. Text is pasted in (you should have recreated the dialog box rather than using a copied image), and as was pointed out, what's with the font?. Also if you put your nose up to the screen and cross your eyes you can clearly see the phrase "I Hate Myself" hidden in the background.
- ihate2regist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stupid dolt using itunes
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, if someone was able to create a "fake global upgrade" whatever that is, they won't know how to change their MAC address then eh?
Makes no sense, so I'll go with that it's a fake. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely not a real message. There’s no such thing as error, “BND938.
Now whether the image was retouched or not, I don’t know. I mean, this guy could have some kind of virus. - mechayakuza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does something this fake and stupid have so many diggs? It's ridiculous.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bek99
a routers WAN port has a mac address. easiest way to learn this is go to a command line and type arp -a. notice your routers mac is on there . that is its internal mac. but if it didn't have an out side mac you would also have the mac address of every web site you go to in there. but it isn't the only mac addresses you see are on your LAN. because the router gives its mac address to the next router instead of yours.
anyway i am really bad at explaining this but thought it needed to be mentioned
Seriously people if you don't know something don't guess. - Shish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> I got banned from Digg!
Anyone feel like posting that and getting it to the front page? I bet it would - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, if you do, at least use the higher res image:
http://photos1.blogger.com/img/108/8170/1024/oops.jpg
And don't come talking to me about "compression distortion around the wording" cos it's real! - wannabetenor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft never uses times new roman for dialog messages. By the way, you can get around hardware banning by...siging up on a different computer...if that's what it is. Such a fake...and a bad one at that.
- mikeroq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actully im not banned, i dont think this guy is either, i was just trying to make a workable fake that looked good and not ***** like his M$paint fake, lol

@GamerSmurf - You think 3/10/07 is next year? "lol wtf?"... - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's probably the GUID or the MAC address. my guess is that they just banned them outright. dunno how though
*to microsoft*You Sneaky, sneaky basterd
-jX - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The fact that you tryed loging into your other account ON THE SAME NETWORK is pointless..you need to try it on an outsider network and on an outsider PC
- Woozle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Infected Mushroom... nice!
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IM services are in the news today for an increased boost in hacks. MSN Messenger is apparently the target of most of the attacks so I would guess Microsoft is trying to crack down and you got caught in the mess. This is assuming this is not fake though but I dont give a damn one way or the other. Just pointing out IM hacking is in the news right now and MSN is taking the brunt.
http://www.betanews.com/article/Report_IM_Attacks_Hit_Record_Levels/1128370226 - kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like a virus or something to me dude, the language isn't very professional.
- corebreach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nick_Circosta made me reconsider my thoughts.
The beauty of an Internet-based prank is that you can make it as realistic or unrealistic as you want. - mikeroq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think i might have worded mine a little bit wrong for microsoft talk, but pretty close, sam your thing is very funny
- unununium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Evergreen98: There are no other dialogs on the screen so yes, you can have this combination of fonts in Windows XP. That being said, his dialog is curiously the same size as the about box.
- encript, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not really sure what they mean by 'hardware ID' ... I'm assuming it's something similar to the thing that Punkbuster uses to ban PCs. Other than that, I have no idea. I tried logging onto the account on my other computer and got the same message. Now I can't sign on any other MSN accounts on either computer! :-(
Oh well. - encript, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not going to try and defend myself to all the people that are calling 'omg this is a fake' to my screenshot. It's not a fake. I don't know if 'hardware address' is a MAC address, or, as .Steve said, a hash of the PC's components.
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0synystar and mikerog... Haha, good stuff.
Mike, RE your account closure.
This is clearly a big problem. It's not fair that Microsoft would shut your gmail account down like that. I think what they used is your "hardware hash" which means they found hash traces on your hardware and shut it down. and also your MAC address, which obviously means they looked to see if you were using a MAC, and you weren't so they shut you down. If I were you I'd email Bill Gates and complain. - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now back on Topic.. the BAN is fake.. its simply just an edited version of the "About MSN Messanger" Windows :P
mikeroq yours is more convinicing and is in a better style had yours been posted first and i not knowing it was a fake i would have had a harder time faulting you :) - bek99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0banned mac address of the router?! are you kidding me? MAC address doesn't apply to WAN unless bridged network. Since its unlikely you're bridged, it ain't a MAC, unless its one inside your computer they use for reference.
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else had this "happen"?
- dmitry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually a bot got banned manually before
- encript, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm on #diradio .. I won't tell you my nick.. but I'm the Doctor :-)
- handcoding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MSN Messenger aside (does anyone still use that?), I kinda like the color scheme he has going on there -- can anyone offer what he might be using there?
- encript, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0handcoding: Windows Classic "Rainy Day"
- omnithrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"For starters. M$ wouldn't ban your hardware ID, just the account. Remember, M$ make money off people using their service."
People pay for MSN? - mikeroq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.mikeroq.com/?act=news&id=52 - my submission! lol
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"
People pay for MSN?"
Sadly, remember AOL still exists :( - mikeroq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this keeps going at this rate, this will be on diggnation
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can use jabber as a medium to still chat with msn people if you really are screwed
- Iam8up, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Make another account..they're free - who cares?!
Changing your hardware ID is very simple, there are tons of easy apps to do it with.
I highly doubt that's the first case, with iTunes and all it must be within the past few years - MSNM has been out much longer and I'm sure someone did something to be banned early in it's lifetime.
It's MNSM, you shouldn't be using it in the first place. - .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is a hash of hardware... even ring up microsoft... lol... they even incorperate a hardware id with the activation...
- mikeroq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mine was ment to be a better fake than his lol
- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well disregarding if its a fake or not i learnt something about MAC adress today and thats good enough for me :) Thanks to those who corected my mis conceptions :)
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mikeroq. Now come on. You can't fool me. I suspect that there is trickery going on here... I think just maybe you edited that picture! But hey! I could be wrong!
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i believe it could be relay. the reason it would be so specific is the fact that they don't have to do this often. i am guessing that bnd938 means he is the 938 person to be banned from messenger in the entire time it has bin running so i think they would make it fairly personal. i might be wrong tho.
- fiver22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The text in the error message seems grainy/pixelated.
- maskd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're using the same Windows skin as me and you listen to Infected Mushroom......
I love you. - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please learn how to screenshot the active window only, or did you want us to make fun of your poor choice of utilities?
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0encript: you're not missing much, trust me. :)
I own ihatemicrosoft@hotmail.com purely as a passport ID (closed the hotmail acct) so I can sign on with trillian or gaim. - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh no! cos of my posting a message, I got banned from Digg!
