- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Cam whore.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I agree totally with the section on the reviewer's favorite plugin. Freaking friends out with psychic mode has been my favorite thing to do with the GAIM/Pidgin since I started using it.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The one thing I hate about Pidgin are the user icons. Green circles. That's it. In Gaim, it used to be distinguished by the protocol icon, which was very useful for me since I have coworkers on both my AIM and Groupwise lists that now look exactly the same. That's really the only major difference I notice.
- praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8IMHO miranda would be a lot better if it were simpler. yes we are geeks, but that doesnt mean we have to sift through loads of crap to make things work and look the way we want them to
- deansfurniture5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Pidgin main site is down, but you can download from sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=235&package_id=230234&release_id=505814 - Oldschoolhack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I want video chat. Plain and simple.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Google talk works as a Jabber system, you can enable it that way
- joolz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6can we have MSN status messages (personal messages) sometime this century please?
- bacchus101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Protocol: XMPP
Server: gmail.com
Screen name: email address without the @google.com
In advanced:
Connect server: talk.google.com
Good to go! - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I second that.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I absolutely adore Miranda. I learned about it from Google's third party client instruction page. The out-of-the-box featureset is excellent and supports all major protocols. I especially love the feature that vertically resizes the window based on how many contacts are logged on. It's also got ANSI and Unicode versions for accessibility in many languages.
The plugin community surrounding Miranda is very active. It's awesome that the poor suckers who bought that Logitech keyboard with the big LCD screen can view their IMs on there while running another app fullscreen! There's also integration with Skype, advanced logging and reporting (apparently I say "no" to my sister more than anyone else), and even system commands like OS uptime.
It's a really smart client. It's obvious the programmers use IM themselves and see glaring holes in other clients. The only real drawbacks are that it is Windows only and there are zillions of options (if you can consider that a drawback).
It's free so there's nothing to lose by checking it out! http://www.miranda-im.org/ - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here's the official Google page on configuring gtalk with other clients:

Big respect to Google for making it easy for users to use the client of their choice. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pretty good review!
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I sort of switch between Miranda and GAIM, but I always ultimately end up choosing Gaim. They're both really decent tools though.
- rwallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh awesome thanks IEatHamburgers
- Brownout, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Pidgin main site il already down.

^ a plugin that i use - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty good app too, been using it the last few days on 7.04 and it's works really well with only 1 or 2 small bugs.
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem isn't setting your own message, it's seeing other people's messages on MSN.
- segphault, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use my window manager to fix that. With Sawfish, I can use the window matching feature to make it so that the buddy list is automatically set to sticky and isn't shown in the taskbar. I also set it to cycle skip so that when it's not in the list when I'm rotating through my windows with alt+tab.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am assuming Pidgin is a play on the word Pigeon... but what is the significance of the name pidgin?
... woops never mind I looked it up on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin
Cool - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"We were thinking up linguistic terms, and someone mentioned Pidgin. Another developer commented that 'corrupted language' may not be the best thing to associate yourself with, to which another pointed out something along the lines of 'have you ever SEEN people talk on IM?'"
I thought the new name was really dumb until I read this. That's actually really clever. - segphault, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can do that with saved statuses.
- sigsegfalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully the Off-The-Record Messaging plugin will get ported over soon. It's included on the Pidgin plugins page, but it doesn't actually work (at least on the Windows version).
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a per-protocol thing AFAIK. Works fine for AIM for me, fails every time with Jabber/XMPP.
- riffic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the new website is up and looks fantastic. congrats to the pidgin team.
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm looking forward for the updated version on the Nokia N800. Wireless fully portable Linux in your pocket FTW.
- segphault, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I'm really looking forward to Pidgin 2.0 on the n800 as well. I really hope that whoever does the port puts more effort into Hildonizing it.
- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait till you realise your account passwords are stored in plain text in a simple XML file. They should be working on some form of encryption to protect users privacy.
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the pidgin guys, as usual, are up on a high horse about this. I wish they would leave it in as an option, but gaim is no longer burger king - you can't have it your way
- allanq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not actually a play on words. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin.
(I guess you found it after I posted. :) - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can we have it remember window position please (in windows, dunno about other OSes)? I could have sworn this worked in the pre-2.0 days...
- cornface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I upgraded to this on my laptop, and so far I hate it. I'm going to keep running 1.5 at home until it stops working. Meh. 1.5 was pretty much perfection for instant messaging. It did what it was supposed to and didn't purposely obfuscate things to force you into doing things a certain way. For extra features there were plugins.
Also it wasn't ugly. - greensky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll try it once the encryption plugin is updated (http://gaim-encryption.sourceforge.net/)
- thegeekpea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, does the "smooth scrolling" in Windows work for anyone? Doesn't seem to be working for me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Christ you need plugins for ABSOLUTE BASIC APPLICATION BEHAVIOUR
- pox05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wish the buddy list did not sit my my damn taskbar, is there a plugin for this?
- thegeekpea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know of a plugin to change the direction messages go in the window? Right now they appear from the top to bottom. I'm used to how Trillian and Adium does it from the bottom up.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can't you just type something in when you hit "available" the same way that you do it when you hit away?
- elmedico27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check this out: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/414
From what I read, the discussion started out with the developers saying "we're not going to change it unless you tell us why you want this feature back" and a bunch of people did and then they were all like "well, that's a stupid reason. you don't really want the feature back, you just don't know it yet. oh and we like it, so too bad for you"
(Examples:

And, after people have a given a ton of reasons why it would be good...

They get this response:

I love the app, but with a developer attitude like that, I may start looking elsewhere... - pox05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use windows... sawfish does not help me.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Another good messenger (for Windows) is Miranda IM: http://www.miranda-im.org/
If you want to see how it can look: http://addons.miranda-im.org/index.php?action=display&id=93
I prefer it over the clunky looking GAIM/Pidgin personally. Plus its got tons of plugins. - Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That was mentioned in some detail in the review...
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i agree its been so long with no cam plug in
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If it's anything like the past few betas, it ***** sucks compared to 1.5.
They took out a lot of great features. Example - you're on 3 aim accounts and you want one to be set to away while the other two are signed in like normal. No can do.
I haven't used the final version so it may very well be in there, but I doubt it is. - SpikeLee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is this a good alternative to Trillian? Or is it weaker compared to?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The new logo and website are terrible
The logo looks like they tried to do an Adiumy but it went REALLY wrong
and the site looks like some dodgy hosting company - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You don't need a spell checker, you need a Hick->English translator.
- rherbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I saw that plugin and enabled it, but I haven't seen it work even when I logged in as a different user on a new machine and sent myself a message. Does it not work from Pidgin to Pidgin?
- EmxBA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It was always the best, and I'm hoping that it won't be beaten by other (K) IM clients.
