- peestandingup, on 06/21/2008, -9/+124Wow, they tested 3 whole browsers & labeled it "the world's fastest".
Uh, Opera, Camino...Bueller, anyone?? - atdigg, on 06/21/2008, -34/+126Try Opera and see how fast it is to start and how fast the interface is. It also loads pages a bit faster I think, but that's not the important thing, everytime I try Firefox it feels like molasses...
- 2Deluxe, on 06/21/2008, -17/+95Ugh really, I cant imagine that many of you are SO BUSY that .5 of a second is going to destroy your web-browsing experience. You spend more time in a day bitching about which is faster than ACTUALLY USING IT.
Net result: -5 hours. - Aequus, on 06/21/2008, -5/+74Definitely agreed.
Why wasn't Opera on the test? In most other browser tests, it's been the one of the fastest consistently.
http://lifehacker.com/396048/speed-testing-the-lat ... - Hades32, on 06/21/2008, -11/+71You can't make a browser speed comparison without Opera... :(
- crowbarred, on 06/21/2008, -6/+58Anything other than IE is faster
- Kappa00, on 06/21/2008, -3/+49At least you care somewhat.
- PawFox, on 06/21/2008, -13/+54Burried, Inaccurate - No Opera!
- sghost, on 06/21/2008, -10/+50I'm sure there is a reason why Opera was not included in that test. I love Firefox but Opera still makes it seem slow. These results are worthless without having all the appropriate contenders.
- Trax91, on 06/21/2008, -12/+50I think FireFox great addon community really pushes it ahead of others, making it my choice.
- Zeali, on 06/21/2008, -4/+39Bury. No opera!
- Ouze, on 06/21/2008, -6/+38The volume of browsers tested before crowning one as "the world's fastest" is like me racing my Honda Civic against my friend's Geo Metro, winning, and then proclaiming that the Honda Civic is THE WORLDS FASTEST CAR.
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -5/+34buried for not including Opera
- DavidGX, on 06/21/2008, -7/+32Buried for "I COULD care less"
- geekchic, on 06/21/2008, -3/+28One of the reasons why Opera seems to load so much faster is that it doesn't have any limits on concurrent downloads.
Most other browsers (haven't checked FF3 yet) limit the browser to 4 items per domain, so a page made up of 20 images could only download four at a time, whereas Opera would download all of them at the same time.
This made sense when people have limited bandwidth, but for broadband users there is no need for the download limit to be applied.
Sensible web designers exploit the concurrent download issue and put various components on multiple subdomains so that the browser can (for example), download the HTML, while downloading four images, four css files and three js files.
Watch Google Maps load a page and you will see in the taskbar how it relies on dozens of subdomains to exploit the concurrent download limitation. - geauxtig3rs, on 06/21/2008, -3/+27I know, that bugs me too. It's, "I couldn't care less." SAying, "I could care less," implies that you do indeed care.
- steveoco, on 06/21/2008, -4/+26Opera by far load the fastest and is most responsive.
- HairyFotr, on 06/21/2008, -2/+23Opera has a limit.. it's in Preferences->Advanced->Network
The default limit is 8 connections to a server and 20 connections overall. - redpok, on 06/21/2008, -5/+25How conviniently they managed to forget Opera...only the fastest browser there is. Buried
- Spuy767, on 06/21/2008, -5/+25Opera is much snappier for me on the PC, and while safari is faster than all the others on the mac, I stil prefer Opera's interface, and features. The new Safari Beta crushes all when it comes to Javascript, so much so that if I can do so, I may recode a web application that I've got to run under safari using javascript instead of opera using Java.
- norbiu, on 06/21/2008, -5/+22Firefox
- cxn926, on 06/21/2008, -0/+17Why didn't they test Opera 9.5?
- RyomaNagare, on 06/21/2008, -4/+20I was going to bury this as innacurate, instead I'm gonna digg it, because the user comments are full of truth
- norbiu, on 06/21/2008, -1/+17http://incompetech.com/Images/caring.png
- dazparkour, on 06/21/2008, -3/+19Okay, for the love of all the comments, and that some of my firefox add-ons aren't working in FF3, and FF2 really is not the same after using FF3, I'm going to try Opera.
YOU HAPPY NOW!? - Dabbsy54, on 06/21/2008, -0/+15Much better more accurate comparison here. Includes Opera and has actual times for different functions.
http://lifehacker.com/396048/speed-testing-the-lat ... - jazzbeaux, on 06/21/2008, -7/+21The latest iteration of Opera beats the snot out of Firefox3 on the three boxes I use (including a laptop). Safari on PC is just butt-ugly and the text is pitiful....
- dazparkour, on 06/21/2008, -0/+13Scientific method fail.
You don't compare YOUR results with firefox with your mates results with opera, you test all browsers on the same PC, then all of them on another PC, and another, until you have enough to determine a fair average.
One browser can ACTUALLY be faster and it CAN be done fairly and benchmarked. I can't believe people are voting you up.
There are NOT too many variables. A lot of other things that have been discovered and studied have FAR more variables. - kevinwiz, on 06/21/2008, -0/+12The scrolling in Firefox 3 still sucks and is laggy at least on my mac. Safari is always smooth. There are just little things that I don't like about FF3 on mac. the address bar is amazing though.
- 35263526, on 06/21/2008, -4/+16Piss off. Developing for IE is hell.
- AlexWiggy, on 06/21/2008, -2/+13Awww, well according to the bury's my comment has recieved, it is evident that Firefox does not in fact make you cool. :(
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -0/+10What year is it where you live? Cause I'm in 2008 right now...
- LiLBiGD1Ck, on 06/21/2008, -2/+11More like holding a race and banning black people from running in it.
- Foamator, on 06/21/2008, -1/+10Lol, that email response at the end is brilliant:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Isn't the key to whether one could or could not care less whether one wants to be literal or sarcastic? :)"
No. If one wants to be sarcastic, they would say "That's the most interesting thing ever!" or something else that would put their caring near the top of the continuum. Merely pulling their "level of caring" off of the absolute bottom doesn't give a sarcastic effect.
Consider this statement: "I need $130,000 to pay off the IRS."
Which of these is sarcastic?
1) "I don't have $130,000 either."
2) "Let me quick right you out a check from my enormous bank account."
3) "I'm not completely broke."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm gonna do my best to drop that example into every day conversation. - Karmavs, on 06/21/2008, -1/+10Please read the article; both versions of Safari were in the test, and both were faster than Firefox 3.
And, for you, here is my own comparison using http://celtickane.com/webdesign/jsspeed2007.php on my iMac (2.4 ghz core 2 duo, 2gB ram)
When the test was made, opera won; but that test didn't include Safari 4. I get
Firefox 3: 469.6 milliseconds (5 run average)
Opera 9.5: 357 milliseconds (average)
[I don't have Safari 3, I'm using the Safari 4 beta exclusively.]
Safari 4: 187.8 milliseconds (average)
That means safari takes 52% as long as Opera, and 40% as long as Firefox 3 to run the test. Yay. - DragonForce4, on 06/21/2008, -0/+9Yes.
- vuzman, on 06/21/2008, -0/+8(Good) browser speed tests also try to eliminate any network dependency, and the inherent inconsistencies therein.
The main reason for Opera's perceived speed is twofold; a faster interface, and a faster rendering engine. - yevkasem, on 06/21/2008, -9/+17i'm sorry that other peoples' choice of web browser affects you so deeply.
- ORBAT, on 06/21/2008, -2/+10Try joining the 20th century.
- rockefeller2, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7So, what are the consequences to setting the connections to max (128) for both "server" and "overall." I maxed the settings out and the speed of the browser seems even faster!!!! Google maps is a good example.
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7Have you not heard of WebKit?... Apple open-sourced their engine a long time ago. You can download the latest nightly build if you like... and it's a full 60% faster than the current Safari and Firefox 3.
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -2/+9My browser opens .0554433227858490991547898084652 times faster than your browser saving me 2 seconds per year to do more nerdy stuff than you.
- zediker, on 06/21/2008, -0/+7Opera is free, been free for a couple years now
- cgruber, on 06/21/2008, -3/+10It puts unnecessary load on the webserver.
- dan1101, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7I use Opera every day; I leave about 10 tabs loaded up in (including digg.com) and just work my way through my daily sites to visit.
It generally renders just fine, only problem I have with is some embedded videos don't play. - AirRaven, on 06/21/2008, -2/+8Opera has a "Block Content" feature that accomplishes exactly the same thing, incidentally.
- dazparkour, on 06/21/2008, -1/+7True, but if it was done Properly, a fair contest could be held. Shame about the article.
- MavRevMatt, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6Because for whatever reason it's not one of the "big browsers", even though it should be. Personally I don't use Opera, but it is just as good as Firefox and Safari, and better than IE for sure.
- unjustend, on 06/21/2008, -4/+10I came here just to pimp out Opera. People with firefox talk about addons, but generally I don't mod out my web browser. Sometimes I'm tempted to use firefox more because of ad stripping ones, but it starts so slow sometimes, plus I just love Opera's tabs and default mouse gestures. (I know FF has tabs, they just never look as good or seem to blend as well. Same with IE's new tabs)
- inactive, on 06/21/2008, -2/+8They did not include opera because ZIMBRA (webmail) applications have issues with the browser.
opera is not only the fastest, it's the lightest (mem use) and smartest. No stupid plugins.
peace.
