- cwraig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33Amarok always gets my thumbs up!!
- pentacle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27people using amarok so much and loving it. consider a donation please. who's sending the beers to dev team?
- DistroJunkie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27Things can only get better from here..thanx goes out to the dev team on a job well done
- waterdrop, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27This is my favorite media player. I love using it Ubuntu. I wish it could run in Windows too.
- richlv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20note that this is stable branch - which means that there are few if any features coming in, but quite a lot of work on stability and fixing bugs that might get no attention during periods when this branch received more work on features.
so this version fixes at least one crash and a bunch of other things. that's good, if anybody didn't get that :) - stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16" iPod device plugin now handles RockBox devices."
Nice. - lengau, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Amarok 2 should be able to run on Windows.
- nhnFreespirit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+144DFX,
I have heard this reaction a number of times before, and I find it rather puzzling to say the least! While it might be true that a few people would be willing to switch operation system based on a single killer app, I find it far more plausible that people switch if they can have the same tried and true programs as they are used to available on the new platform.
Take my girlfriend for instance, she is (still) running windows, but the main apps she uses are firefox, openoffice, gaim and inkscape. As these are all available on GNU/Linux and other free platforms as well, her migration can be relatively painless.
Besides, I would not call what we are doing at the moment porting to windows, it more a case of getting it for (almost) free since QT4 and kdelibs4 have all been ported to windows already. It would most likely take a lot of effort to keep someone else from porting it to windows if we do not, and this kind of artificial scarcity is not what free software is about.
- Nikolaj - Zaphrod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12If the rest of Linux gets as good as Amarok Microsoft will be toast.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Packaged with fukitol? Where do I sign up?!
- amfantasy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9amarok will be able to run on windows they it already compiles, they just need a engine and it'll play
- pcmacman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Looks like its already in the Gutsy repositories.
- nhnFreespirit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, it is possible to use the player window, but do not get too attached to it as it seems to be one of the things that will be removed from Amarok 2.0. The reasons for this are twofold. Firstly, nobody is maintaining it at the moment, but more importantly, there are now many really good external controls for Amarok such as this ( http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Kirocker+Music+Display?content=52869 ) that actually do a really good job and is in very active development.
Also, with plasma coming up in KDE4, there are bound to be some REALLY cool player interfaces for Amarok :-D - Myko, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Yeah, I thought the team was porting it to Windows soon?
- dcbrown07, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6you can go to setting>show player window then close the main playlist window. you can't see a playlist but it plays from the one you have open. then to get the playlist back you hit PL on the lower left side
- Sparkster185, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Anyone know when the Ubuntu repositories will include this?
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs216&d=07254&f=amarok146.png
Screenshot. Icons are nice!
You can compile in ubuntu by doing this to install dependencies:
sudo apt-get build-dep amarok
Then set configure options to something like this:
./configure --enable-mysql --with-libgpod --with-mp4v2 --with-helix
make
sudo make install - MicroBerto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Is there a way to make Amarok small like XMMS or Winamp? XMMS takes up 5% of my screen, Amarok is a monster. All I want is a small playlist and a small "receiver"
- nightrose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Soon. Just wait for the announcement on www.kubuntu.org.
- Garfunkel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I love amarok! glad I saw this had the new rockbox support, my ipod will no longer be a piece of garbage with a poorly designed file system :)
- squirrel83, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3anyone know how to install for feisty?
- nhnFreespirit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3maruchan
The reason for the clashing icon colors (if I remember correctly) is that our artist very recently submitted the new icon theme but it appears that a few icons are still missing from it. In these cases the icon defaults to the old darker color!
It is being worked on! :-) - michnaugh1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can add to your repo by editing /etc/apt/sources.list and inputting the repo from the site.
- PARTyZAN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's already in ubuntu repos. I just upgraded it :)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ftp://carroll.aset.psu.edu/pub/kde/stable/amarok/1.4.6/src/amarok-1.4.6.tar.bz2
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Amarok is really a fantastic app, once you figure out how its playlists work differently than, say, Winamp. It's just more dynamic.
I really, *really* dislike the rounded current song indicator, though. It just looks like a round peg in an otherwise square hole to me. The shape doesn't match any other part of the Amarok interface. I wish there was an option to just make that a solid background color without rounded corners.
Also, KDE software and Linux distros in general need to stop mixing *warm blues* with *cool blues* and calling it pretty. It's really distracting for anybody who's had experience designing with color. I'm starting to wonder if this corresponds to a form of color-blindness, or if it's just lack of education in design.
Anyway, those small complaints aside, I'm looking forward to using Amarok again. - cvweiss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4emerge! emerge! emerge!
- Zaphrod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I agree with your rounded corner comment, it just looks completely out of place.
- kingofpenguins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If? More like when.
And watching how Microsoft is trying their hardest to stomp out Linux, I would say that it is one of their top threats RIGHT NOW. - angrykeyboarder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You should try Exaile then.
- creacher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Get it while it's hot? As apposed to when it's cold?
Good news either way. - 4DFX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thank you for clearning this up for me. All I wanted was for somebody to explain all the enthusiasm really.
Anyway, I agree now that porting things to Windows helps with a later transition to Linux. Good. But in Amarok's case it's kinda useless. What we would really need is for Winamp (or god forbid, Windows Media Player) to be ported to Linux. That would be an amazing step forward.
Thanks again for explaining though. - eean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://www.kubuntu.org will have the announcement in a bit probably.
- wolf08, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You've obviously never used Amarok seriously.
- eean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1SVGs are available, feel free to play around.

- stony, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I want amarok on windows too! Cant wait for 2.0 to imigrate from linux to windows :)
- rocknrolf77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Good to see it's now faster under gnome. And the playlist and collection stuff is also faster.
- SimonGray, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Why must the icons be blue? Doesn't really help usability and it looks kind of dull in my opinion.
- KostisGR, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Can we PLEASE have this on Windows? :(
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1@4DFX (#7306528)
Riiight...
I will switch to Linux so that I get to use an audio player...
Amarok rocks, however, it is not the killer app that the Linux community has been waiting for. - denova, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1i had lots of problems with the SQlite database. I would not add new songs to my collection, and eventually my "smart" playlists disappeared completely. I resorted back to rhythmbox. Maybe i'll give the new version a try when it becomes available in the feisty repositories. I'm using gnome if that makes a difference.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3I recognize that Amarok is the most complete audio player under Linux but it is too heavy, I prefer to use Rhythmbox instead, is light (doesn't go over 16MB of ram limit), stable and does the job.
- Elbart, on 10/11/2007, -17/+7Why are you digging crabjuice down?
foobar + columnsui + panelsui + decent skin = Win. - 4DFX, on 10/11/2007, -19/+4Let's hope NOT. That would just give people another reason not to move to Linux.
- crabjuice, on 10/11/2007, -22/+4Why? Windows alreay has foobar2000 which is superior.

What is Digg?
