- paulsmerdon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I think Microsoft is seriously neglecting the sidebar, one of the few compelling features in Windows Vista. Given that these gadgets have the potential to drive tons of traffic to the web, why Microsoft hasn't released their own gadgets that interact with every form of the Live service is beyond me. I'm aware that there may be some anti-trust implications but that hasn't stopped them from using Live search by default in Internet Explorer. I would have a whole team of programmers pumping these things out all day long if I was in charge.
- PanteroBlanco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Alpha geeks" run all kinds of stuff, but I'll agree that describing oneself as an "Alpha Geek" is arrogant as hell, and in the most dorky sort of way.
Well, unless you just happen to have a fetish for old DEC and Compaq machines...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEC_Alpha - arcooke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I looked at the submitters submitted stories.. didn't see any other Lifehacker posts. I hardly consider this spam... besides, Lifehacker is a pretty good site, far from typical blog spam.
- BRi7X, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10the same people who use the stupid widgets in mac?
yeah, i've been doing a lot of mac bashing lately... somebody needs to do it. - dezmd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Everyone please bury the ***** out of the persistent callwave spam.
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Wow, get over it.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can hit Win key + Spacebar to bring the Sidebar/gadgets to the top, if you have a Windows key on your keyboard. Unfortunately you can't hit that combo again to hide the Sidebar/gadgets, you have to click somewhere else to do so.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yikes. Am I in a grave yard? Cuz everyone is buried.
- DarknessGP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3umm, yea they are probably useful when you need them... however they are fairly useless the other 90% of the time. Seriously, it'd be nice to have package tracking, but I don't order things every day or even every week. Decent list, and I'm just glad it wasn't title "Top 8 Vista Sidebar Gadgets You Must Have!!!"
- brivix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want a good sports one, an ESPN one would be nice..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting list, got a few gadgets on there that are pretty useful.
Search gadgets also seem to be pretty popular as well, though admittedly, many aren't very much more than glorified bookmarks. I'm currently working on an ultimate search gadget that if it works out the right way, would be very useful for searching a lot of major sites. - quomen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Here are some of my favorite(very nice):

It doesn't have a one button access to hide all other work and view widgets. If I want to see my Gadgets--the Weather--I have to look for some super tiny system tray icon--frustrating.
You would look at all the gadgets that come with windows and say these look nice, I wonder what other cool gadgets their are? You click get more gadgets online. What are you presented? You reach a web site saturated with insanely sub-pare, low quality excuses for widgets. And you're like forget it.
I think someone needs to tame the madness on the widgets on the live site. - dukrous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2My personal favorite was the Twitter gadget...very useful, if you're a fan. :)
- Entilza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yep, totally free... (I didn't believe it either). I've been using CallWave since they first started offering "CallWave for Your Cell Phone" sometime last year. But now that they have the side bar gadget, the service is even better.
- Ai3d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This story is cursed with negatives.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I actually got rid of the side bar the first day I got Vista. I may use it again when I get a wide screen.
- azAZ09, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Stop reading my mind
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1You mean, LifeHacker is typical of blog spam: brief or non-existent commentary on a news report that is cut-and-pasted from another source.
I agree. Lifehacker = Spam - Vexxer91, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Great list. I got about half of these. Hope every sidebar lover sees this!
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I had a gadget made by http://www.gadgetspark.com it shows website marketing tips. I one month I had 4000+ downloads and I have about 870 subscribers to my blogs feed.

It is by far the greatest gadget ever created. If you haven't yet found a reason to install Vista, this is it. - triscuitbiscuit, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Anyone with Vista- get Callwave now- it is absolutely amazing. Much better voicemail management for anyone who uses a computer.
Even if you don't have Vista, its non-Vista features are still neat. - Entilza, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I agree. I started using CallWave too for my cell phone voicemail and for SMS. It one of those things that now that I use it, I can't imagine my life without it. Highly recommended!
- privateyepeye, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1
Sucks - who needs this... - cavalierwisk, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8they should make a sidebar gadget that installs linux
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4an actual "alpha geek" would not be seen dead using vista
- Sintu, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5@cavalierwisk: Heck yea, I need to find a way to remotely install Linux, some kid in my class has a Vista laptop.
I disagree with the "Alpha Geek" part of the title of this article. Alpha geeks only run Linux. Duh. - Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3It would be better if it came with Windows and ran on first boot.
- arcooke, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6Screw the sidebar. It would cover up my background. :)

- noamchomskeet, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Wow, is callwave a free service, would definitely be interested in this.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Spam Spam Spam!
Buried. ("Ask Windows Live" about that!) - bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Link?
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2i really prefer my desktop sidebar compared to vistas. its the most convienant way ive found to use an IM skype and winamp at the same time without having to alt tab between them and what ever im actually doing. its also got a command line liked to google which is pretty awesome.
- generalhooha, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1sorry
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4This is the worst piece of spam on Digg I have ever seen. What's with all the commenters above saying "Wow! get callwave it's awesome"?
Go ***** off and die somewhere you maggots. And get a job. - dylanbenstead, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3who actually uses that stupid sidebar
- SurlyDuff, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Dugg for the callwave gadget...that should save me some money on text messages:P
- cbergeron, on 10/12/2007, -23/+7Buried for obsolescence.
Vista is soooo 2004 (when it was originally supposed to ship to customers).
