Aside from that, I love Opera 9.20b's 'speed dial', that is, nine thumbnails inside every new tab on which you can click. Surprisingly lightning fast as well. - digitalmob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I prefer the good old google homepage. Simple, clean, and loads lightning fast.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20speaking of opera:
who needs a start page? when i open up the browser its exactly how i left it! - growlzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16news.bbc.co.uk or xtube.com either one gives me content I need. Oh oops I mean youtube.com... ya youtube.com
- nairanvac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You actually 'see' ads? Pffft. Adblock Plus FTW.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8but the search box is built into the window anyway...
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Digg.com!

Heh, If I had Digg.com as my start page, I would get nothing done during the day. - ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Me too, except for the fact that my Google homepage is completely customized. And the first few "themes" that they've released dress it up nicely.
- gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Am I the only one that doesn't think it's fair that the guy only looked at the "old" My Yahoo and not the new one that's in Beta?
I he judged the new Google themes then he should judge the new My Yahoo. Sure it's still Beta, but if he didn't want to judge a Beta then he should have waited until it was completed before he wrote the article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4google.com/ig + rss feeds
- zammit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i made my own.. yea took a little bit longer to build than setting up google or w/e - but it was _exactly_ how I wanted it
- DirtyBrowncoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why would I be surprised? Netvibes is what I use when I'm away from iTunes at home. I know exactly which podcasts I haven't played yet and can even play them right in the browser if I need to. Yeah, it's not fancy, but it functions perfectly.
And like someone above said, who uses the homepage button when Firefox saves your sessions for you? - shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First Tab: Google Reader
Second Tab: Google.com/ig with everything else I need
That gives me just about everything I'm going to need to look at on two tabs. - bhavi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now All I need is a good desktop environment. By that I dont mean an application, just general elements people keep on their desktop to make them more productive.
- gmurray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm with you. It might not be pretty, but if I wanted something pretty my homepage would just be a jpeg of a sunset and not my email, latest news, and calendar.
- hardcle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that the plain Google page is the best. I don't need any of that extra crap cluttering up my start page.
- B13ND3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article never mentioned http://www.protopage.com/
Personally I think that it is the best. It may not have as many widgets/gadgets/plugins etc. as the others, but I feel that it more than makes up for it in usability. My favorite feature are the embedded webpages. Basically you configure them to take sections of webpages and show you them. Now i can see just the important part of my webpages all at once. Also, you can use your own background image. - edaimler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pageflakes is the innovator in this area. Love watching the evolution of the social component. I expect that Pageflakes is able to concentrate on this area and move much more quickly. it certainly appears to be the case with the responsiveness of the cust. svc. replies and speedy addition of new features.
- iEnigma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2After reading this I decided to try Netvibes. It's slick and classy when customized with a certain module that lets you change background and opacity. It also has a pretty good selection of modules. Also, you can embed URLs into tabs, so it's like opening multiple tabs in FireFox.
- RHEEK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm really loving the speed dial page as well.
I'm looking at this netvibes page right now, and it seems amazing. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2weather.com of my city for me.
- slugicide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was gonna comment on that: what's the use of a "start page" when modern browsers pick up where the last session ended? That said, google homepage pops up when I hit the home button.
- monomal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked the speed of the Google page, so I made my own customisable version. It's up at http://www.forridge.com
It's got all I need, and a few friends tell me they find it useful, too. - eboduch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very happy since I moved from MyYahoo to PageFlakes. Wonder how this market will unfold.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually prefer Pageflakes to the others. I had been on Google, but it really didn't add anything significant that I couldn't get from the Google Reader. Pageflakes has a lot of functional widgets, or flakes as they call them, and it seems like they're coming out with more all the time. It needs some work, but I still find it better and easier to use than the others.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For a second there I thought your name was Baidu, which would have been ironic after reading your post.
Those nutty Chinese trying to make their own Google. - dave91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PageFlakes really does the trick for me. I'm a former Yahoo user, which isn't saying much...but I've come to love PageFlakes and can't really start my session without it now.
- VioletArrows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to switch away from Google for NetVibes or PageFlakes, but Google's the only one that has a workaround for that stupid premium you have to pay to view Y!Mail as POP3, and Yahoo's start page doesn't allow you to preview GMail at all. Right now, Google's themes are still pretty boring, and they don't even display right (they're supposed to change depending on what time of day or season it is, they DON'T).
- griffith2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hm... i think that out of all the start pages out there, pageflakes.com still offers the best mix of modules and a nice collaborative feature. what other page lets you share stuff? i don't know of any...
- cht1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Use pageflakes for my work, it's user-friendly and sharing option works really well for us. Now our whole department is using pageflakes to for their own or some work related matters, amazing how fast it caught on. Stick with pageflakes for sure, go flakes !
chi howe - kevinjfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Pageflakes is working out great for me. I've put everything I need on it--it really was easy to set up the page and the sharing feature provides me with ideas from the other flakes out there who've found stuff I didn't know existed. Even the RSS feeds are easy to add--put a bunch of them on quickly. I think the rating's too low for this--definitely gets an "A" from me.
- skaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although I'm a big fan of the speed and bare-bones interface that Google has, I've been more and more impressed with PageFlakes. Their developer community is growing very quickly and they have some cool features for seeing what other people have set as their home pages.
- joper90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I aggree.. but have bookmarks on my page..
- hmmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google is good at a lot of things, but l think they're ignoring average users. I tried pageflakes and now really love it. I've found their tech reps to be quick at responding to questions. It's worth giving it a good look. Quirks aside, I LOVE the page sharing feature. Why have a home page when I can create public pages with all the info I want to distribute.
- justo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man, the comment in the article about using a random wikipedia page is great!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Randompage - xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Can't be a credible list if they don't even have mobile Netvibes (http://m.netvibes.com)
- Baku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've tried all the startpages, and I keep going back to google... mainly because I always use the google search, and use gmail... so its all integrated anyway.
I only stick with google because it seems to be faster than the others.
have to say though, Netvibes beats all the others on looks. - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.neodux.com/links.php is my Personal favorite. 100% Customizable - chiefly because it's mine.
Basically it's a big table with links pulled from a data file (http://www.neodux.com/links.txt). - automan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2but if you used netvibes, it would tell you when new postings are made on either of those sites.
i, personally, like netvibes the best. all from one page, i see my gmail, weather, todo list, bookmarks (which i have no matter which computer i sit at from my homepage), my 30 boxes calendar, box.net web storage, and digg rss feed from tech. then in another tab i have meebo for instant msg'ing. in the third tag, i get all the opensource feeds from sites i respect.
so no matter where i am or whos computer i sit at, i have my jabber/yahooIM/gmailIM accounts ready in addition to all my bookmarks and files i want to use in different places (box.net).
just my 2 cents. - mydave, on 08/13/2008, -0/+0using random wikipedia is grate.

- nify, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Doubtful info... I'm not impressed. Butt dugg it for some reason.
- jeffc42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've tried all of the start pages over the years. I've been using Pageflakes for a while now and I think it's the best out there by far. First of all it is one of the fastest loading pages. I agree with others and if any page takes too long to load I won't use it. By comparison, Netvibes takes so long, if it doesn't crash my browser, it's unusable in my opinion. I also like the way Pageflakes has implemented the shared and public pages. The shared pages are especially useful in that you can create a page with the features and gadgets you want and allow other users to not just read but participate in the page as well. Very useful for putting up quick pages for group projects, interests, etc.
- c130commnav, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2mmmmm I like pancakes!
- cooljkaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love Netvibes' digg component - when you click on the link it takes you to the comments first. I wish digg.com would do that too. Personally, with all the digg effects - it's nice to see if I should even click on the main link.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Buried, this site keeps popping up with the same slough of articles and is crammed with crappy ads.
(Google homepages ;D ) - Haydio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Firefox start is the best, mainly for google and i dont have to change my homepage when i reinstall windows.

What is Digg?
