- bscott86, on 10/25/2007, -1/+1848368 = GVENT. wow these people are nerds.
- DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8maybe it has something to do with verizon acting like a big cry baby and telling google their "free lunch" is over. looks like now google is giving them a bit of a taste of their own medicine.
- Ryetronics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I use Verizon, and I just put my carrier as TMobile and it worked fine. Try it out.
- jas8522, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I had the idea that the only way to adjust your google calendar would be through the internet, but this seems to change things. The only problem is that you still can't really 'see' it on the go. If only it would directly (and automatically) sync with Windows Mobile 5!
- DeejayLupo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Great find. Dugg.
Now if they can start supporting Verizon... - erhysen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If they supported ActiveSync I'd drop Outlook in a second. SMS adding is pretty cool though.
- tysonwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No support for Canadian mobile phone carriers.... sucks!
- Anth741, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Yeah, but to what effect? The lack of Verizon SMS support doesn't hurt Verizon at all, just the users."
Funny how you should say that. I'm a Verizon user and it doesn't hurt me, I did the gmail filter forward to the vtext trick. But it will end up hurting Verizon in the long run because chances are I'm switching contracts as soon as possible. Not because of the fact that google doesn't support them, but because of Verizon's text message plan, they don't offer their subscribers any way to get 'unlimited text messages' so having reminders for all of the things on your calendar can get very expensive. To me having a calendar text you reminders is the ultimate way to keep track of whats going on and of what you have to do.Perhaps if google makes a deal with these providers to allow the text messages to not cost the users anything people would consider switching their providers too. - quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You just now figured this out?
http://www.google.com/intl/xx-hacker/ - MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can, but then you have to sync it up with something else if you don't do all your scheduling on your phone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What's the deal with them not supporting Verizon anyway? It seems like a fairly major carrier to leave out, so it would appear that Verizon is being... Verizon. I wonder if there might be another reason though.
I need this SMS stuff desperately. :( - Guder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I may find this interesting once they support Verizon. And the T-Mobile trick didn't work for me (no message).
- ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not to be an ass, but anyone who watched diggantion last week would know this... so it's not quite new.
but hell, if people are digging then it must be helping. - ashtonium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, but to what effect? The lack of Verizon SMS support doesn't hurt Verizon at all, just the users. Come-on Google, you're supposed to the one who rises above, let's not be childish now.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Erm...you are using a mobile phone, you can store it on that surely? Maybe i'm just stupid, who knows, certainly not me.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice find! I'm not sure if I wanna start wasting all my unused SMS messages yet but I'm like'n what I see!
- monkzero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow this is a great way to post an event while its fresh in your mind and so that you won't forget when you finally have access to a computer.
- monkzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1true. but you can have it on your g.cal asap.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1ok
- Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They didnt mention that you could send sms to gcal only recieve IIRC
- charlesnorbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SMS Gvent supports Verizon! Annoyed that my Verizon Trio was not supported for notification and this new Gvent feature, I entered my phone number and put T-mobile as my provider instead. I promptly received a confirmation text and once I entered it on the notification page in gcal, I was "SMS enabled."
I then sent an SMS from my Verizon Trio to Gcal and the event showed up perfectly in my Calendar. I haven't tested the notifications yet, but this new feautre is much more interesting to me anyway! Hope this news spreads. Digg it! Had I not been poking round, I would have given up on a Verizon supported GCal. - pixeltree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about SkyTel? I have an analog pager that I'd love to use to receive these reminders.... Any ideas?
- cybertron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sweet! t-mobile worked for me. I could have swore that I tried that before, but never got a message. oh well, works now. My only question now is... are these messages considered "IN Network" or outside messages. If IN, i'm fine... otherwise, i've got to watch myself.
- stfarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anybody figured out how to send events to the calendar via email? For example from work, where I do not have access to Gmail.
- ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh crap, my bad. serves me right for not rtfa
- windycityguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here's an alternate way to add events:
1. Send a SMS with the Quick Add syntax to your Gmail address
2. Open the message
3. Click 'Add Event' from the 'More Actions' dropdown
4. Change any details
5. Done! - pvlas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't seem they support Sprint either...
- mickmel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure they do. Is it not showing up in your list?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what about supporting the austrailian telco's like telstra and optus. in aust we have virgin (one of the most popular, not like in the usa) but im with optus so yea sucks to be me.
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I am working on software that will provide a mobile-friendly interface to Google Calendar for Pocket PC. Hope to have it usable within a month or so (not much time to work on it). It'll use direct Internet connections though, not SMS. Sorry :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ryetronics, that actually worked! Flippin' sweet. I was trying it with Alltel as a carrier (they also use CDMA) and that didn't work; T-Mobile did.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know that Wordpress has nothing to do with Sponge, but I found it Ironic that underneath the your linked post about NLP it says:
"This entry was posted on Thursday, April 20th, 2006 at 1:35 pm and is filed under Uncategorized"
:) ...and miles to go before I sleep. - dananos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I guess the SMS feature only works in the US?, ok, I'll not go off on my rant again about why Google runs so many projects on a US-Only basis - look at Google Checkout for instance.
A market should really exist for an SMS proxy service in the US, where you could relay these messages there. I guess one of the problems, is tha they're using a short-code, which most SMSC's wont support.

http://www.freebiesms.co.uk - TelegramSam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks for the tip! I have a friend that will try it out on Verizon for me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Anyone have any issues with getting a list of a day's events? (it may be because I have Verizon) I was able to add an event, but the 'nday' function didn't work for me. Also, having them support Verizon would be nice, instead of using the email-to-text msg work-around.
- guldi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Spongecell has had this functionality for quite a while, and our NLP (IMHO a very important part of any mobile calendaring solution) has consistently out-performed the competition. Here's a recent blog posting detailing recent improvements to the NLP - http://spongecell.wordpress.com/2006/04/20/the-sponge-learns-to-read-email/
- AndrewEvans, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I thought that you could only have google calander SMS you upcoming events. thats what they said on DL.TV
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4...and as each day passed, we all realised that identity theft, stalking and personal crime got that little bit easier...
- adamlaz2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I WANT VERIZON SUPPORT. What is up with this!? Does anyone have a reason?
